Day 10 of #requiredreadingredo I am so sad that it is the last day, but I am so happy to promote this book! Number the Stars was not a required book for me, but I have read it so many times and it is one of my all time favorite books! When I read it I feel the joy, fear, sadness, etc. of the characters going through the events. I feel that everyone should read this book.

Tables and Desks | Time-Life Books

Day 9 of #requiredreadingredo I don't think I really ever had to sneak books, but if I ever did, these desks were my best friend! A great way to put your work or other reading on top of the desk and have a book open on your lap or leaned into the desk. Or a great place to have a stash of books!

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geometry | Denise Szecsei

I don't think I ever used Cliff Notes for my required reading, but I did have to use books like this to get me through math!!! (It didn't work, I am still horrible at math!)

AsYouWish @ErinSueG Oh my, that is funny! Well as a teacher, I get to relearn and in some cases redo all those wonderful math lessons all over again! Thank goodness it is elementary or I would be in trouble!!!! 7y

Dracula, Prince of Many Faces: His Life and His Times | Raymond T. McNally, Radu R Florescu

Day 7 of #requiredreadingredo I don't remember reading another book in place of my required reading. However, there is a book I stopped reading, flashback to Hatchet, & I know that I was working on my senior thesis paper at that time. So I was reading this & other books like it at that time. Which is really funny considering my reason for not finishing Hatchet, (see comments of that post)!

AsYouWish @ErinSueG Yep! Hatchet was not my thing and just stating for the record, this book also had some of the same effect but unfortunately when you are writing a 30 page thesis paper on good ole Vlad, you can't skip over or stop reading the gross parts! 7y

AsYouWish @ErinSueG As strange as it sounds that was my life as an elementary education and history major! I did get to read a lot of kids books about vampires though, so that was cool! 7y

Peyton Place | Grace Metalious

Day 6 of #requiredreadingredo I don't think I was ever banned by my parents from reading a book, which is awesome! So I am going with a book that my grandma told me was seriously banned when she was growing up. After reading it, I totally understand why. A lot was going on in Peyton Place!

AsYouWish @ErinSueG I agree and I also think that besides the big things in the book that no one want to think or talk about, it also shows strong female characters that don't really rely on the male characters. At the time this was written those were probably scary thoughts for a lot of people. 7y

Erinsuereads @WhiskeyMistress and I have been yelling about context and timing for a couple weeks now!!! It‘s all about when things are released and where! If someone applies today‘s morals to a book released in 1956 it will have a completely different effect! Especially where women and race are involved. These kind of books become timeless because of that I think. 7y

AsYouWish @ErinSueG I completely agree. Because sadly a lot of the issue addressed in Peyton Place and other books like it are still very relevant today, while other issues no one would find odd at all. 7y

Erinsuereads I think it‘s also arguable that some of them are more relevant now than they even were when written! Especially those written well before their time. 7y

AsYouWish @ErinSueG I agree. I think that is why so many books get banned from schools and libraries, because personally I believe books have power. Power to give strength, power to give ideas, power to dream and power to change things. Books like these address issues that need to be talk about then and now. Because sadly some things have not changed since the writing of these books. 7y

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Turtleback School & Library) | Roald Dahl

I was required to read Matilda by Roald Dahl and I really liked it, but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will always have my heart! I actually reread this a couple months ago, a week later one of the students in my classroom checked it out from the library because she saw me reading it!

AsYouWish @WhiskeyMistress @ErinSueG My teacher read James and the Giant Peach to us when I was in fourth grade, but I don't think I personally read any of his books until college. I love his books, but I understand a little bit about why his books are banned in some schools. (edited) 7y

night_shift It's sad to me that I've seen so many Dahl movie adaptions but haven't read a single one of his books. Need to remedy this asap. 😅 7y
