Amerikanske guder
Amerikanske guder | Neil Gaiman

OMG this book was so cool! 😀 It was kinda like Percy Jackson for grownups, a lil bit. Why did I wait so long to read this? 😭 The “Coming to America” short stories were so neat! Shadow was such a good protagonist; tough but oddly sweet. ☺️ I will say that I was unprepared for just how...explicit Gaiman took things in certain parts. 😬 But that‘s minutiae. This book was SO good! Definitely one of the best fantasy books I‘ve read. 10/10 recommend.

11 - 17 Nov 2020 (audiobook)
This did not work so well as an audiobook for me. I found myself drifting off a bit and did not always keep track of the story, particularly as it changed perspective and time. Interesting premise but just did not really engage me. I may stick to biographies - they seem to work well. I will give the TV series a go though.

wanderinglynn I watched a few episodes of the show when I got Starz free for a weekend. It‘s well cast, but I‘m not sure I liked it. 4y
InLibrisVeritas @wanderinglynn I am of the same mind. There are a few scenes that were pretty fantastic but I'm not sure I want to commit anymore time it. 4y
Schnoebs Im not surprised at all by the creepiness of Lakeside. As someone who has grown up in the Midwest and lived in many different parts of it, I‘ve scene what winter can do to some people. I was more interested in the fact that it seems like the god was taking his own sacrifices which surprised me. Similarly to the Native American gods. They would be the strongest since they‘ve been here the longest and .... 4y
Schnoebs ... from my understanding, still heavily worshipped by modern tribes like they were back when Europeans came over. I don‘t know if they exactly left but maybe just did all they could to help especially after giving him the trunk information. I‘m definitely excited to continue on. I‘m just too big of a mythology fan not too😂 4y
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I hadn't thought of the fact that he was taking his own sacrifices! I suppose maybe all he needed was the death and not the actual dedication? Kind of like Loki and chaos 4y
Schnoebs @InLibrisVeritas that‘s what I‘m think. Maybe also similar to how Bilquis obtained her sacrifices 4y

CBee Hey! You can take me off the list as well, I didn‘t read it yet 😕 4y
InLibrisVeritas @CBee Will do! ❤ 4y
Schnoebs I think shadow was a great main character. He was pretty neutral in situations and went with the flow which I think allows the reader to make their own judgement of the gods. The concept of how the gods are created was my favorite part, especially with the fact that you can have “copies” of the same god in different places. I also enjoyed the role that the worshiping played in their strengths. Really allows for quick changes in power. 4y
wanderinglynn I liked Gaiman‘s concept of gods. I agree with @Schnoebs—the worship=power aspect was interesting and how different people created the same god or “copies” of the same god in different places. 4y

Schnoebs I actually really enjoyed this book a lot and has me interested in reading more from him. The entire concept of the old and new gods was really fascinating to me and provided a good reflection on the different things Americans universally value. It‘s even more interesting to think that this concept still stands true during current political climates. Lastly, I really enjoyed the stories. I think they added a decent amount of context. 4y
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I am so glad to hear that! I really liked how the American idolization of the material and fleeting is so prominent and for the ones that he did decribe really creative. 4y
Schnoebs @InLibrisVeritas right? I‘m super interested to see Shadow‘s involvement in Europe so I ordered Fragile Things which has the first short story in it! 4y
Laughterhp I read this book in 2017 and I didn‘t reread it. So I won‘t be participating in the questions this month! But I did enjoy this book when I read it. Gave it 4 stars. 4y
TheSpineView I enjoyed this one a lot. It is not my first Gaiman book and won't be the last. The quality of the prose is outstanding. I liked that the plot was different and how he handled the characters. Additionally, he was spot on about our value system. 4y
Gezemice Oops. I listened to this a couple years ago and loved it. But I don‘t remember much so I wanted to read this time, but October got away from me and I did not. I can‘t really participate in the detail questions but overall I thought it was great, an outsider‘s love letter to America. I recall that Gaiman writes American small town people and their friendliness really well. 4y
Gezemice @TheSpineView Yes, I love his prose, even though he gets too spooky for me often - I still love him for the writing and those great human insights. 4y
InLibrisVeritas @Laughterhp No worries! I am glad you enjoyed it though! 4y
Bookgirl I struggle with Gaiman but do want to try this one. I didn‘t have the head space for it this fall though. Thanks for tagging me and keeping me included!! Hopefully next time... 4y
InLibrisVeritas @Bookgirl No problem, and I understand! I'll make a note to remove your name for the next set of questions ❤ 4y
CoffeeK8 Thank you so much for organizing this, I didn‘t have time to read it but I‘m looking forward to the next one! 4y
wanderinglynn I thought it was brilliant. It‘s not my favorite Gaiman, but it certainly is the most thought provoking. The idea of gods and where their power comes from, how immigration and societal advancement changes religions. 4y
InLibrisVeritas @wanderinglynn Definitely thought provoking! I am curious to see if the short stories and "sequel" handle the changes in the gods in more depth. 4y

This book was unexpected in a good way. It is thought provoking and questions the idea of religion. It challenges most peoples' idea of America and what that means. The prose is descriptive and powerful. I think this book will remain a cult classic for a long time. I read the annointed version. It was helpful with the references I didn't know. It did make it slow but this is a book you read slowly. It requires thought and a bit to digest. 4.5⭐⬇️

Shadow has been stuck in prison for the past 3 years. Things all change when he learns that his wife and best friend both died in an accident. Leaving earlier than anticipated, Shadow heads home for the funeral but meets Mr. Wednesday on the way there. What he thought might be easy when he accepted his job offer has taken him all over the country and introduced him to many “people” he thought were long since forgotten.

It redefined what a “God” means and helped open a discussion in regards to how the U. S. A. doesn‘t have much in organic traditions. Most of what we know are merely different forms/ variants of existing mythologies. I do wish the war was a war so it‘ll be interesting to see how the show adapts that aspect.

I was really into this book in the beginning, because it was so far from what I was expecting it totally threw me to start the journey from prison and with such traumatic news in the first chapter I quickly felt invested in Shadow & felt quite protective on what would happen to him. I also really liked Wednesday, I could road trip with him.

Around half way I did feel like it was starting to drag but then I really enjoyed the last few chapters.

An odd book. I loved the premise / concept. At some parts the plot got a bit long winded and wandered off the path... And the ending....hmmmm.... I have not made up my mind about that.
But I have an interest in mythology and spent a whole lot of time googling the names and reading about the various Gods.

LitHappens I feel like Gaiman‘s endings are often a little disappointing. The journey‘s usually worth it though. 5y
Smarkies @LitHappens you are right - the journey was generally worth it.... And I was a little befuddled by the end.... I mean, it sort of made sense.... But after all that build up 🤷🤷 5y

Fantastically written. Brilliant characters with an interesting view on hypothetical modern Gods. The only issue I had really was that I felt the “War“ between the Gods was a bit of an anti climax after the build up. But overall, I loved it! If the TV series is half as good as the novel, I can't wait.

This comes up from time to time and I‘m happy to see Gaiman‘s take on this. Every once in awhile and author will say that unless you‘re paying full price for a book you‘re stealing from them. This leads other authors have to jump in to defend libraries and used book stores AND remind people not to pirate books because that‘s what really hurts them. I love own books but I can‘t buy every one I read, and I definitely can‘t do it at full price.

CrowCAH A nice way to think of “used” books. 5y
Tamra Amen! 5y
SpaceCowboyBooks As a used bookseller I find it strange when authors don't like used bookshops. Everyday I turn new readers onto people's work, and most of us host reading events. I also often rescue books that would otherwise be pulped. 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @CrowCAH I agree! @Tamra I second that! @SpaceCowboyBooks I don‘t understand either. Fortunately, I‘ve not seen some of my favorite authors be jerks about used books. One even asks how people found their books and never seems to mind that a lot of us say used or the library. 5y
Catherine_Willoughby I agree. Brought a lot of preloved editions (fussy about covers) . I have in turn purchased new books from that author 👍. 5y

Finally got around to reading this, having had it on my weekly forecast for about a month. And, wow, what a book! Gaiman writes such great prose, and the story hits so many themes. My only gripe is the interludes, some of which just served to interrupt the story rather than enhance it. I wonder if some of these were bits cut from the original version and later added back by Gaiman.
