The Angel's Game
The Angel's Game | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
From the author of the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind, comes a riveting new masterpiece about love, literature, and betrayal. In this powerful, labyrinthian thriller, David Martn is a pulp fiction writer struggling to stay afloat. Holed up in a haunting abandoned mansion in the heart of Barcelona, he furiously taps out story after story, becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. Thus, when he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance. But as he begins the work, and after a visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, he realizes that there is a connection between his book and the shadows that surround his dilapidated home and that the publisher may be hiding a few troubling secrets of his own. Once again, Ruiz Zafn takes us into a dark, gothic Barcelona and creates a breathtaking tale of intrigue, romance, and tragedy From the Trade Paperback edition.

I started reading this book a couple of weeks ago, when I was on vacation in Barcelona. A historical novel set in that city in the 20's and 30's, it's full of mystery, obsession and a hint of the supernatural. It wasn't as good as Shadow of the Wind but it still captivated me.

Dan Stevens read the tagged audiobook, and he did a great job. He should read all the books in the series if he hasn‘t done it already. #sundayfunday

Ruthiella I also listened to this read by Dan Stevens and it completely elevated the experience for me. I thought his accent when pronouncing Spanish words was pretty good too. 2y
Susanita @Ruthiella I listened to a different book where the narrator mispronounced common Spanish place names, so I appreciated that Dan got the words right. 2y

The book quote that sticks with me the most is from the tagged -

I also have a tattoo of Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse Five -

I finally finished! With that, I‘m calling it for the year. I had to scale back my reading goals and ultimately finished 74 books. This was one of two books in translation that I read this year, which is a little ironic because I actually understand Spanish reasonably well. OTOH, considering they were two of the longest books I read this year, I think I was a little intimidated! Maybe I‘ll read his short stories in the original..

When he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance…after that the plot becomes intricate and mind-boggling. David has a brain tumor, then he doesn‘t. He becomes an unreliable narrator. I think I need to go back and read Shadow of the Wind in hopes it will all make sense.

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the other books in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. I thought it got very wordy in places, and could have been a much shorter book.

Next up for #NovelNovember Readathon.

Yes, I know I'm reading The Cemetary of Forgotten Books out of order of when they were written, but there are some that suggest this should be read after The Prisoner of Heaven, as it is referenced at the end of that book.

I may start reading it and realize I should have read it before The Prisoner of Heaven, but we'll see. 😂

@Andrew65

This is a great story. The author basically creates all these lovely characters and then kills them off slowly and in unexpected ways. It's possible I am exaggerating. It's good that you don't seem to need to have read the previous book in the series because it's been a long time. And it'll probably be a long time before I adventure into another one.

Once again the author creates a vivid 1920's Barcelona where the streets although dark come alive. The author is known for his world building and this book doesn't disappoint on that but I really wasn't into the plot or characters in this one. This book is a mix of gothic mystery with paranormal elements which on the whole didnt work for me, the pacing of mysteries are too slow to hold my attention and this is definitely a slow burn.

Coleen_Nieto @michellesibs I agree, of the books in the series, I liked this one the least but overall I love love love the series. It will make more sense when you get to the 3rd and 4th books. 4y

Slightly unsatisfactory prequel-sequel to Shadow of the Wind, wherein a hack author is engaged by what I'm assuming is the Devil to create a new religion. Intriguing premise which never really develops and leaves this reader slightly baffled. Hopefully the subsequent installments make more sense.
