I don‘t have a specific word to share today, but I did see this post from Merriam-Webster this week that I think is worth a share.

I ran across this new to me word last week. I'm trying to jot words down as I stumble upon them. Not sure I would call this one weird but I found it interesting and thought you might too.
A toast to weird, wonderful and interesting words!!! 🍾🍾🍾
Happy Wednesday!
Pedantry alert!
Over the last few months I‘ve noticed a linguistic shift that is driving me insane. I first noticed on podcasts (hence the picture), but I‘ve even noticed in work emails (written by educators no less). There seems to be a trend to shorten words. “Priorities” becomes “priors”. “Comparisons” and “Competitions” both become “comps” (which previously was used for “comprehensive exams”). ⬇️
“The English language has had other terms for poets over the years, among them the word maker itself, as early as the 15th century. English speakers esteemed poets highly then; the word maker had been used to refer to God since the century before. Shaper too has historically referred in English to both a poet and God.”

Accurate, but couldn‘t my word be more exciting?!

Bwahaha. Yeah I am guilty of being a blatherskite sometimes. 😂

Thanks for sharing, @Lizpixie
Thanks @jmofo for the chance to win in your #LasagnaHogGiveAway! I love words and I love etymology. Some of my favorite words are lollygag, melancholy, plethora, juxtaposition, and discombobulate. 🤣
The person, or people, running the dictionary‘s Twitter have taken on a Herculean task. 😮
Anyway, happy #DictionaryDay!
For @BookishTrish because I'm a pedantic ass 🙄
One of my first book loves, I learned so much from the many dictionaries in my life. Often a solitary soul, I found answers and solace and jokes and connection through dictionaries. My partners in crime with writing.
Pictured too are a few select favorite books for @ErinSueG for her #crimesagainstcovers photo challenge! The item on the right is a flower pressing book I made in part with the dust jacket from an art history book from college...😬
And the Random Word of the Day is: COMA.
Definition: A state of profound unconsciousness.
I put myself in a coma on the weekends after many consecutive weeknights of little sleep. 😪 A sleep mask and earplugs are incredibly useful in this endeavor. What books have kept you up at night?
Taking a break from reading to watch these amazing spellers. The famous Dr. Bailey and the last girl standing! Love love love the Scripps National Spelling Bee! 🐝🐝🐝 #spellingbee #word
I would just like to mention that "facetious" is a spectacular word that includes every vowel in alphabetical order... Aside from y, the weird non-committal vowel of doom. #english #studying #vocabulary #notquiteabookpost
Today is National Dictionary Day. It was created as an unofficial holiday to celebrate the birth of Noah Webster in 1758! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #LitsyLovesLibraries #TheMoreYouKnow
Today's #wordoftheday
A little boring, but hey, it's Friday!!! 🤓
Love this! Probably not so much for those affected by Irma rn ☹️
I really enjoy Litsy but my goodness I am slow to accumulate points.
Don't you hate it when some starts an article, "The dictionary defines X as..." #lazy #overit I mean this is scientific writing, not high school! ??
I just feel like someone here needs to know about this job opportunity. https://www.merriam-webster.com/jobs/content-social-media-manager
I found out today that one of the geniuses (I assume there's more than one) running MW's social media, specifically Twitter, is leaving for another job. MW on Twitter is my favorite social media account. The snark and sassiness had been a source of joy and I hope that they can maintain it.
One of my most recent book purchases was a Merriam Webster Dictionary for a friend's daughter. Yes, it can be found online but when you're writing a paper and don't want to be distracted what you need to not do? Also, I'm a fan of knowing how to use dictionaries, libraries, etc. Now I've found out she's been following experiments on YouTube and experimenting at home. Next up, a poster of the period table. Any book suggestions would be welcome!
Some new packaging for Etsy shop items! You guys, I swear this dictionary was already a goner before I started slashing pages.
Day 27 of #riotgrams is this #doorstopper I picked up at a flea market. It's serving as a plant holder and Batman display. @bookriot
Found this at the Milwaukee Domes today and couldn't pass it up. Made with 1870s Webster dictionary pages.

The German noun feinschmecker literally means "fine-taster" from fein "fine" and schmecker "taster". The word entered English in the late 19th century.
I'm marking this a pick for the Merriam Webster Twitter account. The person and persons responsible for their account is/are brilliant. If you love words and don't mind some subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) politics with your words this is a social media must follow.
End of the first week of the new semester, and you know what that means--lots and lots of new books! #englishmajor #college
Scrabble night with Mr. Eve! Tuesdays have turned into board game night for the past month. We got this at Barnes and Noble this morning. #wordnerds
My husband forgot how to spell "egg". We had quite a laugh!
I am cozied up and working my way through this book tonight. I love word puzzles!

Crying at these dictionaries throwing shade... 😂😂😂
Cool article explaining the origins of some holiday words -- perfect for word-nerds! Enjoy! https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/wassail-yule-holiday-word-origins

My little friend here helped me pick a word for Dictionary Day! #hauntedbooktober 🎃📖🎃📖🎃📖🎃📖🎃📖🎃📖🎃📖

Didn't get it, but if anyone wants this 12" x 9" x 6" behemoth, it's only $7 ?? #ArlingtonBookSale
You would not believe how many words are in this book. Like so many. Seriously though doesn't Google make this book obsolete. The internet has affectively turned the dictionary and its cousin thesaurus out on the streets.
