Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death
Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death | James Runcie
Sidney Chambers, the Vicar of Grantchester, is a thirty-two-year-old bachelor. Tall, with dark brown hair, eyes the colour of hazelnuts and a reassuringly gentle manner, Sidney is an unconventional clergyman and can go where the police cannot. Together with his roguish friend, Inspector Geordie Keating, Sidney inquires into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewellery theft at a New Year's Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a well-known jazz promoter and a shocking art forgery, the disclosure of which puts a close friend in danger. Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty.

I really enjoyed the first half of this. The last two mysteries were considerably darker. Still no gore, but one of the female characters is very nearly raped and frankly I don't want to read about that. The last mystery was about the murder of a gay character who was killed because he was gay. Sidney says the right things, pretty much, but it's still the 50s. I might try another one in the series just because I like the show so much.

CarolynM I read the first couple of books. I like the TV version better. 2y

When I picked this up I didn‘t realize that each chapter is a new mystery and was therefore more like a collection of short stories than a novel which threw me off a bit. This won‘t keep me from looking up the TV show however as I feel that I may actually prefer these mysteries in that format.

I'm watching Grantchester and thinking "This show is super cute. Oh Man! There are books! Gotta read those!" So I hop on over to Overdrive to see if they're avaible and they are! So I get the first volume, and.. for some reason Kindle won't let me download it?? WELL THAS B'CUZ I ALREADY HAD IT. Yes friends, a series that I didn't even know existed before today, I apparently bought last November. Also don't mind the TV cover bc James Norton is cute

Awww ☺️.

This surprised me. It's a series of mysteries (not all murders, minimal gore), set in 1950s Cambridgeshire, which Canon Chambers solves alongside friend Inspector Keating. Along the way, he ponders life, faith, relationships, and above all "unassailable friendship". And gets a dog, to the dismay of his housekeeper.

I have a new comfort-reading series!

And yes, I may well be the only person on the planet not to have seen Grantchester.

I saw all of the so-so reviews of this on Litsy and was not sure if I would like this one. Overall, I did like it. Each chapter was its own mystery, so they acted like standalone stories. Very different from the TV show - the first story followed the show closely, but the others are so different. I would try others in this series, because they're somewhat light like a cozy mystery.

#RecommendsDay

This is the first book of a series of detective stories featuring an English vicar named Sidney Chambers. The stories run from the 1950s to the 1980s and feature murders, arson, faithful dogs, cricket (the sport), and jazz of dubious quality.

I enjoy these books because they treat faith as a positive aspect of life without being preachy. They're thoughtful and fun.

Who can resist a handsome vicar-sleuth who loves jazz? 🎶

StaceGhost Oh man! I'm totally addicted to these, and to the show! I can't wait till the semester is over and I can read for pleasure again. #teacherlife (edited) 8y

This first Grantchester book was only okay. A collection of short stories, linked chronologically, made easy reading when I was trying to fall asleep. Some were interesting and exciting - most were just sort of...there. I'll read the rest of the series at some point, but I'm in no rush. Also, it looks like these should be read in order, for the rest of you who need to read a series "properly" like me. ?

rabbitprincess Have you been watching the series on PBS? 8y
LauraBrook @rabbitprincess most definitely! For the eye candy, if nothing else. 😍😍😉 Some of the stories stick very closely with the episodes. I haven't watched the show yet (am familiar with it though) but I can see why people call this a cozy mystery: the characters were wonderful (I adored their interactions), the mysteries were interesting, the setting feels brought to life here, and some themes are very much applicable to today. I highly recommend this book if you're into mysteries and stories set in 1950s England 😄📖❤️

Canon Sidney Chambers a priest turned detective in the Grantchester in Cambridge.

The six stories in this volume range from robbery to killing to forging art work. They all take place between 1953 and 1955. The cozy mysteries are funny and witty with a cast of characters that will stick with you.

Sidney is not the ordinary priest, he is modern, young and in a way knows the mentality of his parish. He enjoys a drink and a mystery :)
