So Many Books
So Many Books: Reading and Publishing in an Age of Abundance | Gabriel Zaid
57 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
"Gabriel Zaid's defense of books is genuinely exhilarating. It is not pious, it is wise; and its wisdom is delivered with extraordinary lucidity and charm. This is how Montaigne would have written about the dizzy and increasingly dolorous age of the Internet. May So Many Books fall into so many hands."Leon Wieseltier "Reading liberates the reader and transports him from his book to a reading of himself and all of life. It leads him to participate in conversations, and in some cases to arrange themIt could even be said that to publish a book is to insert it into the middle of a conversation."from So Many Books Join the conversation! In So Many Books, Gabriel Zaid offers his observations on the literary condition: a highly original analysis of the predicament that readers, authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians, and teachers find themselves in todaywhen there are simply more books than any of us can contemplate. "With cascades of books pouring down on him from every direction, how can the twenty-first-century reader keep his head above water? Gabriel Zaid answers that question in a variety of surprising ways, many of them witty, all of them provocative."Anne Fadiman, Author of Ex-Libris "A truly original book about books. Destined to be a classic!"Enrique Krauze, Author of Mexico: Biography of Power, Editor of Letras Libres "Gabriel Zaid's small gem of a book manages to be both delectable and useful, like chocolate fortified with vitamins. His rare blend of wisdom and savvy practical sense should make essential and heartening reading for anyone who cares about the future of books and the life of the mind."Lynne Sharon Schwartz, Author of Ruined by Reading: A Life in Books "Gabriel Zaid is a marvelously elegant and playful writera cosmopolitan critic with sound judgment and a light touch. He is a jewel of Latin American letters, which is no small thing to be. Read himyou'll see."Paul Berman "'So many books,' a phrase usually muttered with despair, is transformed into an expression of awe and joy by Gabriel Zaid. Arguing that books are the essential part of the great conversation we call culture and civilization, So Many Books reminds us that reading (and, by extension, writing and publishing) is a business, a vanity, a vocation, an avocation, a moral and political act, a hedonistic pursuit, all of the aforementioned, none of the aforementioned, and is often a miracle."Doug Dutton "Zaid traces the preoccupation with reading back through Dr. Johnson, Seneca, and even the Bible ('Of making many books there is no end'). He emerges as a playful celebrant of literary proliferation, noting that there is a new book published every thirty seconds, and optimistically points out that publishers who moan about low sales 'see as a failure what is actually a blessing: The book business, unlike newspapers, films, or television, is viable on a small scale.' Zaid, who claims to own more than ten thousand books, says he has sometimes thought that 'a chastity glove for authors who can't contain themselves' would be a good idea. Nonetheless, he cheerfully opines that 'the truly cultured are capable of owning thousands of unread books without losing their composure or their desire for more.'"New Yorker

Decided to get organized with a tracker in my journal for my TBR piles… I made a separate one for books on art and design because I also have a lot of those. These don‘t include my current reads though, as I just wanted to get a handle on the chaos lol. I‘ll color in each book as I finish them.

In my defence...I've been in a bookstore only once before today in the past 365 days. 🙈

Such an epic haul! Holy shit! Buying in a bookstore is soooo much more fun than buying online. 💯📚📚📚💯

Also... #24in48 starts tonight so...you know...wanted to make sure I was ready. 😅

MsMelissa Nice haul!! Bookstores are still closed here, but as soon as they reopen I‘ll be there! 4y
Soubhiville Great haul! Have a great ‘thon! Are you shooting for the full 24? This is my favorite readathon, I always set the entire weekend aside for it! 😁 4y

I don‘t know if anyone has checked but Amazon Prime Day has a TON of kindle books on sale!! I also found a Buy 2 Get 1 Free section for hardback/paperback books! Not sure if this is Prime Day related or not but they have a ton of great book here as well, including lots of newer releases. I wanted to share 🥰. Do you know it? That gluttonous moment when you realize how many ebooks you‘ve borrowed from the library, plus the three physical “turn the paper pages yourself” books that are checked out, plus the book you just bought...and you‘re wondering which to read first and how many you can read at the same time and how these all ended up on your bookshelf.

Do you have a problem with buying soooo many books and a never-ending TBR ?
I kind of found a solution for myself :

I make lists of books I already have in different genres and if I complete one list, I can buy N-1 books.
Ex: If I read 4 books of Sci Fi, I can buy 3 new Sci Fi books.
I'm nearly completing my thriller/mystery list and I'm so exited !
I didn't buy new books since 2 months. That's challenging but it works !

I‘m trying to make sense of my ridiculous book collection and cull the ones I don‘t really need to make an impending move a little easier. This is an overwhelming task. 😨😨😨

How do you decide what books to keep and which ones go?

HOW DO I MOVE SO MANY BOOKS??

#moving #toomanythings

Tamra I only kept books with significant sentimental value or ones that were so good (5 star) that I might read again. It was amazing what I culled. 6y
SkeletonKey Oof, yeah that would definitely do the trick. 6y
LauraBeth Its tough. My last big move, I left behind hundreds of books. That was 20 years ago and I miss some of those books every single day and have even replaced some of them over the years. 😀 6y
See All 14 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I usually start with boxes, medium or smaller so they aren‘t too heavy, and pack my “I am definitely keeping this” books & series. Those are also ones I unpack first and put prominently on my shelves. Then there‘s tons left that I go through, is it one I still want to read or that I‘m interested in re-reading, did I love it? Could someone else love it more if I donated it to the local library, etc. I try to take them a pile before every sale. 6y
SkeletonKey @LauraBeth - I‘ve rebought books as well! 6y
SkeletonKey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - I think keeping in mind that someone else could be reading this would help a lot. Thanks! 6y
JMEdwards If you know it's something you will probably never read, let it go. If it's something you read and it was a casual read, you can probably let that go too. You make room to better display those books that actually have meaning to you. 6y
Dan_SpiderCrafts I'm in the same moving situation. I often reorganize one large main bookshelf of my keepers. The rest (put away elsewhere) might have a few good rediscoveries, but most of the untouched storage has to go. 6y
SkeletonKey @AlobelThee - Good luck with your move too! When I read your situation it did sound similar to mine. Hope it goes well. 6y
Avanders I recently culled >500 books from my shelves (mostly unread). I asked myself, first, will this ever be the *next* book you pick? I want to read them all, so "do you want to read it" didn't work for culling.. but "will this ever be *next*" helped...Then I had to make harder choices .. and asked, basically, am I *geeked* about this book? I still have >1000... but it was still hard!! And I reminded myself about wishlists & libraries as I went along. (edited) 6y
SkeletonKey @avanders- the “do I want to read it” never works for me either but keeping the “read it NEXT” in mind might actually do the trick, thanks! I have nearly 3000 books 😓 6y
Avanders @SkeletonKey eep! I was around there in our last house too.. it was a much bigger house w a dedicated library!! 6y
SkeletonKey @Avanders - I have a library here as well but I know I won‘t in my next place 😭 6y
Avanders @SkeletonKey 😢 it's a hard adjustment. But you'll make it work! We just get more creative w book placement 😁 6y

JenlovesJT47 @julesG I'm good, just tired all the time! 😴 And I know it's going to get worse lol. 3 weeks to go! And yeah, I'm really bad about not moving something off my currently reading shelf if I lose interest. I mostly leave it there to remind myself to finish it at some point in time! 😅 7y
julesG That's what I have a "Hibernating" shelf for. It's for books that I haven't yet given up on and hope to pick up again one day. Hang in there. The last weeks are tough. Take it easy, relax as much as you can. Don't forget, you're making a human in there. 7y

readinginthedark That‘s amazing! And The Hours is so good! I need to reread that one. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @readinginthedark Is it? I have heard that but I've been dragging my feet, probably bc I didn't love the movie. And bc Mrs Dalloway is very close to my heart. It's in my mom's pile right now and she'll probably love it, though we have somewhat different tastes... 7y
readinginthedark The movie is a bit different than the book. There are some superficial changes with how the characters act and dress, but you also get so much from their thought processes in the book. Take this with a grain of salt, though, because I also love the movie (for different reasons). Don‘t listen to people who say it‘s trying to be Mrs. Dalloway. It‘s really about how the novel affected these different characters at different points in time. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @readinginthedark I definitely didn't feel like I necessarily disliked the movie, more like I felt like I had the wrong context for it. If I had seen it before studying Woolf in depth I think I would really have liked it. So I'll try to let go of my preconceptions and borrow it from my mom sometimes. And yes, thought processes are always the best part, so that should be good. 7y
readinginthedark That makes sense. I actually read The Hours first, then watched the movie, and then started reading Woolf. So my perspective was different. 7y
