quote

As a familiar brand, “Kool-Aid” proved more memorable to the public than “Flavor Aid.” “Don‘t drink the Kool-Aid” became a jokey catchphrase for not foolishly following deranged leaders. “It . . . still hurts every time I hear it,” says Juanell Smart, who lost four children, her mother, and her uncle in Jonestown. “I hated that people laughed when they said it, like what happened was somehow funny.”

SqueakyChu This cult remains alive to my memory because a friend of a friend was a victim of the Jim Jones cult. Message to heed (even today): Never follow a leader mindlessly! 6y

I wanted to like this book. I liked the concept, the writing was great, but I got so tired of all the horrible men. When the monsters in a book are men, men you've known and experienced, it's not fun or scary or enlightening. It just made me weary and sad and so, so tired. (But I guess I shouldn't give in to the tiredness? Someone might set me on fire.)

Beautiful writing, but I just couldn't bring myself to care about the main character.

SqueakyChu Yeah. I totally agree with you. I didn‘t care for any of the characters except for Hobie. It was only the author‘s descriptive writing that carried me through the 771 pages of this book. Have you read The Secret History by Donna Tartt? I liked that novel so much more. 7y
Wife I felt the same🌹 7y
Phlamboyant @SqueakyChu I loved Hobie! This was my first Donna Tartt. Maybe I'll give The Secret History a go. 7y
SqueakyChu @Phlamboyant Definitely do it. It‘s very mysterious and completely different from The Goldfinch. 7y
dragondrool Yep. I, too, loved Hobie. He's what kept me reading. 7y

Even though I know he'll reciprocate, taking the baby so I can slip away for a few hours, this is the first time I've taken advantage of it.

One of these authors doesn't want you to forget that the characters have last names. Just in case you do, they are mentioned several times a chapter, if not several times a page.

Resorting to audiobooking. I struggle with focus when it comes to audio anything, and logistics are a bit fuzzy when it comes to timing (I'm working wave solder this week and often have to pause to answer questions or make quick phonecalls to support staff), but it's kind of working.

SqueakyChu Haha! 7y
SqueakyChu How are you liking this novel? I just finished reading it. 7y
Phlamboyant @SqueakyChu I'm roughly a third of the way through and can't decide. There are times when I find the writing compelling and get completely sucked into the story, and times when I become impatient with or disinterested in Theo. 7y
See All 9 Comments
SqueakyChu @Phlamboyant Interesting! I never liked Theo throughout the whole book. This is one of those novels that gets a whole range of ratings from the worst novel ever to the best novel ever and everything in between. I like Tartt‘s writing very much even though I only liked one character (not Theo!). 7y
Phlamboyant @SqueakyChu I really don't like Theo, either. I want to, knowing what he's been through, but I just don't. 7y
SqueakyChu I predict that you won‘t like him much later in the book either! 😊 7y
Phlamboyant @SqueakyChu Thanks for the warning. 🤣 7y
Phlamboyant @SqueakyChu You were right. I liked adult Theo even less. 7y
