Delhi Riche: A Novel | Diksha Basu
160 posts | 91 read | 4 reading | 186 to read
A heartfelt comedy of manners for readers of Seating Arrangements and Crazy Rich Asians, Diksha Basus debut novel unfolds the story of a family discovering what it means to be nouveau riche in modern India. Hilarious and wise, Delhi Riche illuminates with warmth and charm the precariousness of social status, the fragility of pride, and, above all, the human drive to build and share a home. Even the rich, it turns out, need to belong somewhere.

Weekend fun read....when a family from humble background comes into a huge amount of money because Mr Jha sold a website domain....Glitzy world that follows ...I found myself rooting for the Jhas as they blunder their way through high society.🦸

I really enjoyed this one. Basu tells a wonderful story about an Indian family that‘s become wealthy and how they adapt to suddenly having a lot of money. The story has moments that will make you laugh and smile. Basu introduces the reader to Indian culture through each character. It‘s a shame more black American writers don‘t write stories like this light but informative. I highly recommend it!

I didn‘t dislike this book but I wanted more to happen. A middle class family in India becomes extremely rich after selling a business, so they move to a rich neighborhood. The husband, wife, and son all deal with their changed circumstances in different ways. A lot was about appearances and expectations. My issue was it took forever for them to move. I liked the side character, a neighbor from their old home, a lot more. This was my #BookSpin.

TheAromaofBooks I hate it when it feels like a book takes forever to get moving!! Good review!! 5y

I‘ve said before that I don‘t plan my reading ahead of time but this month I‘m giving it a try. This are (top to bottom) the Modern Mrs Darcy book club choice, Read with Jenna‘s April pick, and my #BookSpin #DoubleSpin and #TripleSpin books. Not pictured is Jessica Simpson‘s bio, which I have on the Libby app, and any audiobooks I can work in. Has anyone read any of these?

Started Reading the Kindle edition September 19, 2017, only to reshelve it and pick it back up this month (audiobook) and not enjoy it.

I just couldn't get into the characters. They were always in each other's business trying to influence and control each other's lives. I vividly remember zoning out, especially when any of the characters would talk about what they have and the name brands. ugh, 😑. I was irritated. Not for me.

I did not enjoy this at all. Mr. Jha is obnoxious, with his need to brag to everyone about his new wealth, & then his need to compete with his new neighbor about which of them had the more worthless son. I thought this would be a light, funny read, and it was just...ugh. I don't mind the audiobook narrator, but the story itself was a huge letdown. I only finished because it counts for MountTBR and I didn't want to bail on another book this month.

This is a story of traditional family and a modern son. This middle class family from India suddenly has an enormous amount of money and their life quickly changes. It started off really strong, but then quickly lost its luster.

I have a few weeks before I start the second round of revisions on my thesis, so I need some help choosing a book. Finally making some progress on Windfall! This book is witty and charming, and I'm really enjoying it.

P.s. that coffee warmer is life changing. I used to literally reheat the same cup of coffee into oblivion. 😅☕

callielafleur I had a coffee warmer back in college (15ish years ago) and I found that it changed the flavor of the coffee somehow- almost gave it a plastic-y flavor. I would love to find one where that wasn't the case! I'm guessing the technology has improved since then. 6y

Mr Anil Jha sells his website and becomes very rich overnight. He and his wife move from a middleclass apartment to a villa in a rich neighbourhood in Delhi. Everyone is judging them: the former neighbours as well as the new ones. Trying to fit in is not easy and leads to some funny situations. More than funny I found the novel charming and sweet.

Started The Windfall today! I subbed an 8th grade heath class, and was reading while the students worked on packets. It was sex ed week, and so naturally all of the 14 year old boys had to ask me highly inappropriate questions (stuff that definitely was not in their packet) while I was reading. So, I may have to read the first chapter over again because I'm not sure what's going on. 😂

Bklover Oh, how do you keep a straight face?!😂😂 6y
Rachel.Rencher @Bklover I tried so hard for so long, but they asked this one question that I won't repeat, and I said "That sounds like something that Jerry Springer would need to sort out", and I just couldn't hold it in any longer. ?? 6y

Meh. I've heard this compared to Crazy Rich Asians since it's kind of rich-people-problems, but it wasn't as fun and absurd. This was a little more serious, with a couple "ha, I see what you're doing there" amusing moments. Best part was side character Mrs. Ray trying to find herself as a young-ish widow.

File this under: Things I‘ve Been Doing Instead of Reading “Jane Eyre.” 😅

Recently, I enrolled in a Bollywood/Bhangra class at a local center for World Dance & Music. Tonight was the last session. While there‘s absolutely no way that I don‘t look utterly ridiculous doing the choreography, it was fun to dance again!

Plus, I really dig the meaning behind Bhangra. Details below. 🤗👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: It‘s the dance that farmers in Northern India do at harvest time when there‘s been a good crop. Bhangra is a style that men traditionally have “owned”; it‘s powerful & forceful, with big movements & a ton of positive, unbridled energy. The fact that women have made it their own in more recent years & have claimed that sense of power & joy for themselves is *incredibly* cool & subversive! (edited) 6y
bookandcat I love bhangra! At my college they would do a senior bhangra during their Indian dance and culture festival and any senior in the whole school could participate - so much fun! We also had bhangra classes taught the school gym. So glad you got to do it! 6y

I read this for book club & we all felt the same way, which almost never happens; we liked it but nobody loved it.

It‘s one of those books that suffers from too much hype. Everyone‘s praised it as being “so funny” but...it‘s only mildly funny. 🤷‍♀️

It‘s a book about a middle-aged Indian couple who suddenly comes into money, & the pitfalls of trying to “keep up with the Joneses” - or the Chopras, as the case may be. Nothing overly original here.

Anyone else a homebody on the 4th of July? We head out early tomorrow morning to travel to VA, and my daughter has never liked fireworks - sensory issues - so she is cuddling with me until the neighborhood displays nearby are over. 🎆🎇

🛏 👨‍👩‍👧😺😺 🛏 Full bed tonight. 😂

Kaye We don‘t do fireworks anymore. Did them every year with the family all home but now it seems a bit more bother than it‘s worth. Drive all over looking for a parking spot, get out and get chewed up by mosquitoes, sit for 20 minutes to watch fireworks, then wait in a traffic jam for an hour to get home. I‘ve got better stuff to do.. like sit on the couch. 6y
ravenlee We stayed home all day. Not fans of the heat, crowds, or lots of noise. My kiddo was up almost three hours past bedtime last night because of fireworks, and expected again tonight. Some good snuggles though! 6y
Grrlbrarian I‘m not a big fan myself. Love staying home most of the day at least! And I feel terrible for people and animals who can‘t bear the noise. So rough! 😞 6y

AmyG What @Kaye said. I like being home, in the air conditioning, no crowds, watching on TV. 6y
PatienceFortitude Ignoring fireworks, or trying to. The big display is near my neighborhood & sounds right above my roof. Feh! Watching baseball with The Swain instead 6y
alisiakae @Kaye @ravenlee Our neighborhood has a big HOA pool party which we have gone to in the past, but it is always ridiculously crowded at the pool. Neighbors set off fireworks behind the pool over a pond, but it‘s so dry here, and I‘m not a big fan of large firework displays when it is done without a permit near a bunch of homes (and people), esp. when it has been really dry here recently. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I like being home too and I'm also not a fan of fireworks. Hope your daughter is okay. ❤️ 6y
alisiakae @Ashley_Nicoletto She‘s fine! They used to really bother her, now that she‘s older, she just doesn‘t like them, and gets annoyed until they stop. She‘d rather watch a movie. 😂 6y
CBee What @Kaye said! I also have a child with sensory issues (he is autistic) so we don‘t do fireworks. Also we are just homebodies and can‘t stand crowds 😂 6y
vkois88 Our neighbors have been setting them off all week, but they're going all out tonight... LO has already been woken up 3 times. She went to bed at 8:30-ish. If it's not the fireworks themselves waking her up, it's been the dog barking and freaking out bc he can't handle them. I loathe fireworks. 6y
vkois88 Also, where in VA are you headed? It's where I live 😊 6y

emilyhaldi Oh man, sorry you didn't think this was very funny! Mr. Chopra had me lol'ing the whole way!!! But atleast you didn't hate it 😉 7y
doodlebug55 Same here! I felt abit “meh” about it as well. 7y
Mdargusch Good luck @monalyisha - I recommended this to my bookclub and I think they were like @TheLibrarian - they did not see the humor. I laughed out loud to this book though. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y

Enjoying some reading by the pool before my afternoon conference session. Wishing it was sunny though...

Mommamanzi I was hoping to get out to the pool today as well apparently it‘s going to be a rainy yuck day in Orlando though 😐 7y
OSChamberlain @Mommamanzi Been raining all morning here in Miami, too 😔 7y
TheLibrarian @Mommamanzi I‘m in Orlando right now! Yes, it‘s not supposed to very nice today. @OSChamberlain Thankfully it hasn‘t started raining yet in Orlando. 7y

Mommamanzi @TheLibrarian skip the conference and come play hooky with the Manzi‘s lol. 7y
Jess7 Do you like it so far? I‘m considering adding this one to my botm box for May! 7y
Reviewsbylola LOVED this book. 7y
Reviewsbylola It‘s amazing @Jess7 Definitely add it. So so hilarious. It was one of my favorites of 2017. 7y
Jess7 Ok, you convinced me. @Reviewsbylola will do. 7y
TheLibrarian @Mommamanzi I‘m so jealous you live down here. And if only I could skip! Sadly it‘s for an unfamiliar system so it‘d be quite noticeable to return and I didn‘t know anything new. 7y
TheLibrarian @Jess7 It was ok! Have you seen any spoilers for May BOTM yet? 7y
Jess7 Yep. I‘ll tag you 7y

Mehso-so

Cute but nothing great. Cool to read about Indian culture but really only the older generations are interesting to me. The younger generation were brats.

BookishMe I agree especially spineless Rupak... The satire was a fun read for me ;D 7y
ShannonOffDuty @BookishMe oh yeah! Rupak is what took the book down to So-so level for me lo 7y

Such fun read! Likeable characters who mostly kept me smiling (except for the younger generation ;)) and a happy ending is always an icing on the cake!

Simona Again off the topic ... I just want to check if everything is okay, because both packages are waiting for you at the post office since last week and the opening day for #muglove exchange is in two days. 7y
BookishMe @Simona hi hi. Yes, I will go tomorrow morning to collect them. Just heads up that I will open your gifts when the parcel I sent, reaches my other match. I was late to send ;o 7y
Simona I was a little nervous and in panic, because in my country you have to collect the package within 7 days and if you don‘t, package goes back to the sender. Sorry for bothering you ...again 😌 7y

BookishMe @Simona my apologies for not assuring you earlier. I have up to 10 working days to retrieve them. I wanted to redirect them to a more convenient post office branch but the time taken will be longer if I just go to the original collection branch when I can make time ;)) 7y
Simona Maybe I take these exchanges a little bit too seriously 😳 7y
BookishMe @Simona I think you're being responsible 💕💕 7y
Simona Nicely said 😘 Responsible is much nicer word than panic 😅 7y

This was so good - funny but deeply introspective and a complete delight. And, it was the final book for my #BOTMbinge this month! Yay! Finally down to a manageable number of unread #BOTM picks.

ElishaLovesBooks This book was great! 7y
emilyhaldi I agree- a complete delight!! ❤️ 7y

~Mr Jha was open to the idea of a white daughter-in-law, as long as she was beautiful. Like one of those Baywatch women.~

😅😅 Mr Jha is such an adorable wannabe... Raring to throw his dollars to keep up with the Chopras and Mukherjees.

Waiting in a queue is a breeze with likeable characters! #nowreading #currentread
