This was written in 1975! 😱 How can you not love a late-Victorian-self-sufficient-no-nonsense-badass female archaeologist protagonist who travels to Egypt in search of antiquarian objects and the freedom to do as she pleases? Throw in some worthy sidekicks and adversaries as well as a mummy-run-amok, and you have one heckuva fun historical detective read. I see more Amelia Peabody in my future.
Spinster Amelia has decided to take advantage of her inheritance & travel across Egypt w/ a young woman she rescues. What follows is an adventure of archaeological discoveries, possible romances, & The Mummy‘s Curse, of course.
A very, VERY slow first half, but once the story got started it kept going! Amelia & Evelyn are delightful together & the scene setting was fun. Lots of condescending English racism, but not as bad as I expected.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Was the mystery satisfying? Yes! Was the banter delicious? Absolutely! Was the racism freaking heinous? 💯 I'd love to continue with this series and I get that it is a product of its time (70s era writer with Victorians cavorting through Egypt) but I just can't stomach it.

A suffragist & scholar of Egyptology,Amelia Peabody is the epitome of the 1920s modern woman.Armed with her journal, umbrella(a handy weapon),& new friend Evelyn, she travels down the Nile to the architectural site of the Emerson brothers. What follows is a wild caper filled with “accidents,” unknown enemies,man-made and environmental obstacles, evil adversaries, supernatural forces,& romance.

Anyone want to share? Tag; you're it! 🤩
It's a long time since I read this, my Amelia Peabody rereads tend to be the mid series books (the grown up Ramses, Amelia & Emerson's son, is a lot of fun in those) so I'm grateful to #BakerStreetIrregulars for sending me back to it. It's a proper old fashioned adventure/romance written with great wit & style. The audio performance is excellent too.

Another month gone. Wasn't it just #Scarathlon? 😂
I had never heard of the Amelia Peabody books, but when I saw it for a BR and read the description it sounded pretty good. I really enjoyed it and plan to continue with the adventure series.
I‘ve heard great things about this series for years, so was glad to give it a try for the #BakerStreetIrregulars . I‘m so glad I did! Amelia Peabody is not your typical Victorian woman, and J loved her sarcasm and her views on society. It was also a nice intro to archaeology. I‘ve already purchased book 2! #192025 #1975 #BBRC #YeahBaby #PotCallingTheKettleBlack (Peabody and Emerson are so alike, it‘s like a mirrored image!).
I am only on ch. 3 , but both of these women, Amelia & Evelyn are courageous, audacious, intelligent - this book makes me laugh with glee at how Amelia got rid of Alberto with her umbrella. #audiobook
#BakerStreetIrregulars Thank you to everyone who revisited this mystery or read it for the first time with us! I‘ve found a new favourite lady detective! I‘ve put together a few discussion questions but feel free to talk about anything you want below: ⬇️
#BakerStreetIrregulars #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 A fun, charming mystery. I was not expecting everything to be tied up in such a neat bow. Just started book 2 in the series.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator is Barbara Rosenblatt. She managed to give each character their own voice without sounding forced or ridiculous. I‘ve mentioned it elsewhere but I read the book almost 20 years ago and didn‘t remember a thing. This audio will be much more memorable I plan to move on to the next one in the series, just not immediately. I don‘t want to get burned out.

Audiobooks are so hit or miss for me. This one is definitely a hit!
Three down….. this was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the historical elements as well as the mystery. I‘m glad the #bakerstreetirregulars chose this one! Being stuck in the lobby of a Disney hotel all day has its benefits 🤣
My friend decided to try out Expedition Everest, which makes me feel nauseous 🤣 so I sat in the shade and read a chapter or two! #readeverywhere

I love this series and was so happy to have it selected for #bakerstreetirregulars. I have read the whole series in print and on audio multiple times. It does require accepting the racist, colonialist, sexist, and classist viewpoints as belonging to the historical setting. That aside, it‘s a fun romp through late 19th century Egypt, with entertaining characters, mystery, adventure, and a touch of romance.

I've been wanting to reread this series for quite some time, so I was pleased when the first book was chosen as this month's read for the #BakerStreetIrregulars, giving me an excuse to kick off the series reread!! This book was just as funny and entertaining as I remember, with just delightful characters and a romp of a mystery. I remember reading that Peters wasn't intending this to be a series originally, so this one ends with a HEA epilogue ⬇

I rather enjoyed this tale of archeological times in the late 1800's. The characters grew and I loved the leading lady who told the story. This was a great read for #BakerStreetIrregulars #BuddyRead. In spite of the obvious Scooby-Doo mystery and pervasive racism, it was hard not to love the formidable Amelia Peabody.

The August #TitlesandTunes theme is #TheWorldIsMyOyster and I finally found my pair. For my song, I chose “We Are!“, the first One Piece anime opening (Japanese version). Nothing says “the world is my oyster!“ like an adventure series for 13 year old boys. My book opens with Amelia inheriting £500K in 1884, as well as being Very A Citizen of the British Empire in Egypt.

2. Endless if I like the series.
3. Cowboy Moon by James D. Doss
Amelia Peabody by Elizabeth Peters

Listening to books I‘ve already read seems to be key. I find I miss too much listening to unfamiliar texts.

Can I choose a fiction and non-fiction author? 🤭 Fiction: Elizabeth Peters. Her Amelia Peabody series is my favorite ever- the only books I re-read. Non-Fiction: AJ Jacobs. I LOVE him. I'll read anything he writes. 🤓
What a great question @ozma.of.oz 😃

I would love to see the Amelia Peabody series done right in a TV adaptation. My biggest concern about book to screen is, however, that they won‘t be faithful enough to the original material.
The time has come for indomitable Victorian Amelia Peabody to see the world, armed with her parasol, and rescuing a young woman along the way. There‘s mystery, there‘s Egyptology, there‘s romance (Peabody might deny this), there‘s a walking mummy and there are some cracking lines!
Great fun, though a little dated in parts. Glad I got to this eventually.
Rainy train reading earlier.
I *know* book series should be read in order but I just don‘t (sorry Trish). Outcome being: I am LOVING going back to the start and hearing how Emerson and Amelia got together.
I've coveted these versions of the Amelia Peabody books for a long time and finally decided to get them. 😊 It's a bummer that not all the books in the series have been updated though.
Also shown- a petrified rock my dad found in a gravel quarry when I was 7. He gave it to me and it's been on one of my bookcases after another ever since. 💜
I do love Amelia Peabody. She‘s so very very… herself!🐊
And I‘m over the moon to discover I never actually read the first in the series! (Yes, I read series in random order 🫣 - I was actually planning to re-read from the start, but that might be tricky!)
😁
Light, entertaining. My favourite part was the setting…Egypt, the Nile, excavation sites. The story itself was ok, but not anything spectacular.
Oooh! Someone donated a ton of Elizabeth Peters books to the library! I decided to support my library by buying them all! Getting 17 out of 20 is not bad. The way things are going I can‘t always rely on libraries to keep older series like these. Better safe than sorry right! 😅

A lot has been going on so it's time for a comfort reread.
I quite enjoyed this travel, excavation, mystery, mummy book. It reminded me of The Mummy, the Brendan Fraser version, in all the best ways. Adventure, Egyptology, a mummy mystery (although more earthly than supernatural), and a great spunky, snarky, doesn‘t put with anything, intelligent heroine trading barbs with a much more blunt & gruff excavator. It is definitely a bit dated in parts, but it fit with the time period of the story.
