An account of Davidson's trek across the Australian desert, but it's not an 'intrepid young adventurer' story. She explorers humanity, nature, brutality, race, and gender. The writing is excellent; it's was a bit of a revel. Highly recommend (though there are instances of intense cruelty to humans and camels described, be advised).

I need to go find the original NatGeo article on the trip, she was funded and photographed by the magazine.

★★★★☆

First read in 2010. My wife Amy and I started the audiobook of this American nature classic last June while driving home from Moab, Utah, a place that is very special to us. Acknowledging Abbey's ableism, racism, sexism, and hypocrisy, one can't deny that he's a compelling writer. I wish all readers of this book could also read Robert Macfarlane's introduction. ⬇️

bibliothecarivs Now I must read Amy Irvine's critical response, 'Desert Cabal: A New Season in the Wilderness'. 🔚 4mo

Met 1 of my idols tonight at my library. The gentle, talented, all round good human above. I saw her on Gardening Oz once & have been collecting her 📚 since. If you aren‘t familiar with her work you have to see it to believe it. Tickets to her exhibition & talk were free & afterwards there was 🍾 & nibbles to finish a gorgeous week night off. No school tomorrow as I‘ve a couple of appointments & performing 🩰 at night. No rest for the wicked.

Jeg Great pic. I too love her work. We have most if not all of her books. (edited) 4mo

An adorable reimagining of Baba Yaga as a witch from Santa Fe. I loved all of the nods to the inspiration, like the roadrunner legs and the prickly pear fence. I'm not sure why the girl looks like she stepped out of Tim Burton's imagination in most scenes. #Retelling #BabaYaga #Witch #PictureBook

This story shows that, just like Nora, we all have things that scare us or make us feel sad, but we can find courage to keep going. After reading about Nora‘s adventure, think about a time you were brave or overcame something difficult.
