I‘ve heard great things about this series for years, so was glad to give it a try for the #BakerStreetIrregulars . I‘m so glad I did! Amelia Peabody is not your typical Victorian woman, and J loved her sarcasm and her views on society. It was also a nice intro to archaeology. I‘ve already purchased book 2! #192025 #1975 #BBRC #YeahBaby #PotCallingTheKettleBlack (Peabody and Emerson are so alike, it‘s like a mirrored image!).

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I really enjoyed this one. 7mo
dabbe Still can't believe #1975! 🤩😱😂 7mo

Librarybelle I know, @dabbe !! 7mo
CatLass007 @librarybelle @dabbe @thearomaofbooks I‘m so glad everyone is enjoying this new-to-me series. The author‘s real name was Barbara Mertz and in 1952 she earned a PhD in Egyptology. Under her own name she published two books of nonfiction that have never been out of print. She also wrote under the name Barbara Michaels. (edited) 7mo
MemoirsForMe I really need to continue this series. I loved Amelia in this one! 7mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 I had not realized she wrote nonfiction too. Thanks! 7mo
Librarybelle @UwannaPublishme It was so fun! 7mo

This was one of my favorite Roald Dahl books growing up, but I haven‘t revisited it as an adult. Still a great story! The love and friendship between Danny and his father is so special, and the way they work together (to give Victor Hazell his comeuppance) is perfect!
Quite an adventure!
And Roald Dahl writes the most nasty, villainous adults! I have to skim read their parts 🤣
(I found this fabulous vintage copy for my shelves!)

mabell @Aimeesue You have a good memory! I‘m trying to remember when I first read it! I can‘t think of anything I associate with it that would pin down the timing. This is going to drive me crazy 😆 12mo
mabell @AvidReader25 Same! I‘m always a little nervous going back to books I loved so much, but this was just as I remembered! ❤️ 12mo
mabell @Librarybelle I was so excited! It was a former school library copy that I extricated from the book cover! 12mo
squirrelbrain I had this exact cover, although mine was paperback! 12mo
mabell @squirrelbrain How fun! It‘s such a perfect cover for this book! I‘m trying to remember the one I had - I didn‘t remember this one, but I also didn‘t think it was Quentin Blake 🤔 12mo

10 yr old Momo lives in Belleville, a Parisian suburb, with Madame Rosa. His parents left him there many yr ago against payment. Madam Rosa is an old Jewish former prostitute who takes in children to care for against money.

Madam Rosa was sent to one of the concentration camps during WWII and one of the most impactful parts of this book for med is his this has effected her.

First published in France in #1975 #192025.

What a beautifully raw story encapsulating truth bomb this short story is. On its surface it‘s the life story of a prostitute in Egypt about to be executed for murdering her pimp, but as the story unfolds you realize her crime was much more about peeling back the layers of supposed society and civility that allowed her to be abused and disenfranchised, while men benefited, and being punished as she attempts to take more power for herself.

Weaponxgirl I was so excited when I found all this authors books on scribd! I can't wait to get to this one! 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Weaponxgirl I know I‘ll be reading more by her! 6y
Weaponxgirl Did you clock the books about her life on there? I posted about them as I'd seen them in a bookstore but couldn't afford them and was super excited to find on scribd. I found a signed book by her in a charity shop once and it's one of my most treasured finds 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Weaponxgirl I‘ll look for that one too! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Weaponxgirl I tagged them both on my list. I wish this one was on Scribd too, but I‘ll keep my eyes open for it... 6y

Not sure how I feel about this yet but I needed a #1975 book for my #birthdaychallenge. And I'd like to read some well-known authors while I'm at it!

I forgot how amazing this book is. I love the way King gets into the nitty gritty of small town life. I also forgot how truly terrifying vampires can be. Eat your heart out, Edward Cullen. #epicstephenkingreread #book2 #1975

Gayan Vampires don't sparkle they KILL! I love the fact that The Lot would be truly terrifying on it's own even without Barlow! 🖤 8y
TheNextBook Are you doing these in order! Enjoy! I loved it. Will do it again in a few years! It is such a commitment but so damn worth it! 8y
Josie @TheNextBook I sure am!! I'm only reading two back to back, though. Then I'll throw something else in the mix as a palate cleanser! I burn out real easily so I'm trying not to push it! 8y
TheNextBook That's a great idea! Enjoy! Doing this forced to me to finish Dreamcatcher which I dnf-ed when I was younger! 😂 8y
