This was brilliant.

A creepy suspense novel set in a hotel in Luxor. Starts innocent enough and then gets dark really fast, approaching psychological horror.

The protagonist is a woman in her 80s who has been hotel hopping and meddling in others' beeswax since the death of her husband. SHE IS ABOUT TO MEET HER NEMESIS.

Highsmithian was right. This was right up my street.

eclectic-reader Love a Highsmith comp. Adding to my tbr 1d

A slow-paced, contemplative novel about life running a bookshop. We meet various characters and discover the roots of their hopes, wistfulness and melancholy.

More vibes than plot, this was nonetheless a cosy read.

A major theme was work and the way it can both drain or enrich a life.

A sweet, gently philosophical read that celebrates books and coffee.

Morr_Books I know you are soso about this book, but it is so pretty. 😀 5d
Prairiegirl_reading I finished and loved both We‘ll Prescribe You A Cat and Before the Coffee Gets Cold in February. Have you read either of those? 5d
RaeLovesToRead @Morr_Books Oh yeah, 100% 😊 The cover is gorgeous! 5d

RaeLovesToRead @Prairiegirl_reading I've read Before the Coffee gets cold and the first sequel. I loved it. You can almost taste the coffee 😌 If you actually think about the time travel mechanics it doesn't exactly add up but SO WHAT hahaha 💕 5d
RaeLovesToRead @Prairiegirl_reading I tend to avoid books with cat in the title because I can't cope if anything bad happens to a cat in a book so I would be reading the whole thing worried 😅 5d
Prairiegirl_reading Nothing bad happens to the cats! I wouldn‘t love that. 😊 I was just wondering because I was thinking about reading this one soon and thinking these were maybe comps. This cozy genre is new to me and I NEED MORE!!! 5d
RaeLovesToRead @Prairiegirl_reading In my latest video I do declare that cosy isn't for me because I need more of a hook, however, I would suggest this one if you don't need plot and just want vibes! The characters are all quite melancholy so it isn't overly saccharine, and it had more depth than Dallergut Dream Department Store. So yeah... it was sweet 😊💕 4d
Prairiegirl_reading @RaeLovesToRead ok perfect! That helps me! Thanks!! I‘ll check out your video. 😊 4d

Clayton Stumper turned up in a hatbox on the fellowship's front porch as a baby. Instead of actually having a heart-to-heart with him before her death, his mother Pippa sets him a treasure hunt to unravel his past. Maybe she just thought he could do with getting some fresh air?

Adorable, but a little boring. If you like low stakes and very little plot, this was a fun meander. Wholesome, but I generally need more meat to sustain my interest.

Female authors for the TBR 🔥🔥🔥🔥💕💕💕💕

Billypar Great video & picks! It's funny, today I stumbled on a decade-old email I sent to my aunt with a list of recent books I read and ratings. Probably 90% male authors. And lots of the same ones over and over that I read in college or were likely on the white-male dominated best of lists from the early 2000s. What a difference a decade (and Litsy) makes, lol. 1w
RaeLovesToRead @Billypar Thanks for supporting the channel 😊 Glad you enjoyed it. My reading tastes have certainly diversified for the better in recent years. When I was in my early 20s I mainly read Harlan Coben and mystery thriller- adjacent stuff 😄 1w

While at times this was a bit cringe and at other times tonally jarring, the world still needs more of this sort of thing, and so I'm rounding up to 4 stars!

Voyage of the Damned is a fantasy murder mystery set on a boat. Characters from 12 different provinces (that seem to be based off Crash Bandicoot levels) are off on a pilgrimage, and it's not long before they start getting butchered.

Fun, violent & cheesy with an overall positive message.

Bookwomble I thought that was the Dawn Treader at first glance. 2w

Once she even switched POV mid-sentence.

DeWitt's debut was grim and grotty.

If you like books where people take lots of drugs and alcohol and poop themselves - and you've already read Trainspotting - then this might be for you, but it wasn't really my cup of tea.

Reasonable writing, but no redeemable characters and written in the second person, which should never be attempted.

Read his other stuff instead.

Mehso-so

I just spent over an hour writing down my thoughts on Goodreads if you want to know what I thought in full, but in short:

This was a spectacular piece of writing about infatuation, obsession, misery, loneliness, emptiness, selfishness, relationships, & staring into the void.

Having said that, the MC is a toxic, judgemental, superficial narcissist who behaves in some truly unforgiveable ways.

And I'm not sure it was intentional.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LeeRHarry You certainly enjoyed it more than I did. 😊 1mo
Ruthiella I think the MC was intentionally not great… 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @LeeRHarry Enjoyed is... definitely not the right word 🤣🤣 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella I hope so. The thing that makes me worry Broder put too much of herself into it is reviews of her essay collection. I haven't read it, so I'm rating it as a character piece. 1mo

If you're looking for a book to get more people on board with current social justice discourse, this is not the one.

There's certainly lots of food for thought and I agree with most of what's being said, but there isn't enough empathy with opposing views to truly build a bridge.

Ironically, I found Shahvisi a lot more convincing in later chapters when she loses some of the certainty and allows more nuance into her arguments.

The Plot | Jean Hanff Korelitz

Mehso-so

There's no copyright on plots, but nicking a good one can still have consequences... Jacob Finch Bonner is about to be massively inconvenienced.

This is a slow paced thriller that didn't quite manage to build enough claustrophobic dread and tension to make it worth my while.

Also the premise relies on "The Plot" being truly original and mind blowing, and it just... wasn't all that.

Not a bad read, but... unsatisfying.

AlaMich I agree! This one did not live up to the buzz, imo. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @AlaMich It was fine, but when there is that IT WAS THE MOST STUPENDOUS AMAZING PLOT EVER expectation, the author is setting themselves up to disappoint the reader 😅 Should I read The Sequel? 2mo
AlaMich I haven‘t read it but I would say give it a miss. 2mo
The_Penniless_Author I feel like the only way to do something like that is to never reveal what "the plot" is. Just establish that everyone in the fictional world you've created agrees that this plot is the most mind-blowing thing ever created, and then let the reader imagine what it might be. Because unless you happen to be the greatest author in the world, trying to render something like that will always be a disappointment. 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Yeah, but that's also a frustrating cop out haha 1mo

Quietly touching.

A mother tells her daughters about dating a famous movie star (before he became a star.)

Usually, this kind of slow-paced, deliberately heartwarming, nostalgic type of storytelling is not for me. I steer away from the saccharine.

Ann Patchett creates a wonderful sense of place, her characters are believable, and her writing is lovely.

By the end, I did have an emotional response and it wasn't the one I was expecting.

I think someone should just confiscate technology from me!! Haha. I will try emailing. I have the links to where I can download it but my phone is blocking it. And the playstore too. Ugh 😭😭😭 3mo
Birdsong28 Try this https://litsy.en.uptodown.com/android I used it as I updated my phone and it wasn't on the play store 3mo
Vansa I've mailed them multiple times about this, using it on the web browser really isn't very nice! I end up being an infrequent user when earlier with the app, I used to check and post practically hourly! 3mo
marleed Oh shoot, I hope you get it worked out! 3mo

Got my #Christmas Crime challenge underway!

M = Mansion (The 31 Doors by Kate Hulme)
A = Agatha Christie (And Then There Were None)

Surprisingly similar concepts! 😅

Ruthiella Nice work! 3mo

Mehso-so

Reading this directly after And Then There Were None was probably a mistake.

The Thirty-One Doors was far too complicated. Everything from the plot to the house lay-out needed simplifying.

It was atmospheric, with decent writing and lots of good ideas, but it needed a fair amount of smoothing out, because now I have a headache!

The quirky house locked door murder mystery with a creep factor genre is my thing, but this was hard work to read.

This hefty and magical work of literary fantasy is a masterpiece.

Full of atmospheric moments, superior world building, gorgeous prose, and wry Georgian character, Norrell and Strange exudes quality from every pore.

Unarguably a slow burn, this book will linger in the mind long after reading.

I hit a massive reading slump around page 700, but it picked up again by the end, and I will never forget Norrell or Strange in all their eccentricity!

dabbe You've inspired me to maybe wield it off my shelf. 🤩 3mo

willaful @dabbe A good word for a book in which a book is literally eaten. 😂 (edited) 3mo
