Fool's Fate | Robin Hobb
A heralded writer of epic fantasy, Robin Hobb has given readers worlds within worlds in her heroic Farseer and Liveship Traders trilogies. Only a few are aware of his fabled, tangled pastand the sacrifices he made to survive it. And fewer know of his possession of the Skill magic. With Prince Dutiful, his assassin-mentor Chade, and the simpleminded yet strongly Skilled Thick, FitzChivalry strives to aid the prince on a quest that could ultimately secure peace between the Six Duchies and the Outislandsand win Dutiful the hand of the Narcheska Elliania. For the Narcheska has set the prince on an unfathomable task: to behead a dragon trapped in icethe legendary Icefyre, on the island of Aslevjal. Yet not all the clans of the Outislands support the princes effort to behead their legendary defender. Are there darker forces at work behind the Narcheskas imperious demand? As the prince and his coterie set sail, FitzChivalry works behind the scenes, playing nursemaid to the ailing Thick, while striving to strengthen their Skillultimately bringing his unacknowledged daughter into the web of the Skill magic, where the truth must finally unfold. The quest emerges amid riddles that must be unraveled, a clash of cultures, and the ultimate betrayal. Oh Fitz you make so many mistakes, but I loved his journey with the Fool wrapping up The Tawny Man trilogy. For those unaware, Robin Hobb is a major undertaking and you don‘t start here. This series is worth it though, beautiful writing, an amazing world and fantastic characters. 5⭐️ Next up the Rain Wilds-but probably next year. 😎

My 2023 Reading Bracket is complete. It was very hard choosing between Mistborn, A Curse of Krakens, Changes and Fool‘s Fate. All of them were favorites this year but Fool‘s Fate edged out just slightly for the win 🥇

Robin Hobb has such an amazing way of sucking you into this elaborate world with fully fleshed out characters without slogging you down with too much description. She gives you just enough to let your imagination run free 🥰

A monster of a finale - buckets of action, great character development, fascinating interactions (especially Fitz and the Fool) dragons getting frisky, heart-break (and corresponding heart-mend!) and a nice mix of satisfying AND frustrating resolutions. Whole trilogy has just been ultra absorbing - to maintain the relentlessly good writing over 2000 pages is no mean feat. High quality fantasy entertainment.

bnp Watching this evolve over time has been a fascinating and frustrating and amazing process. Kind of wish she'd write about Bee and Nettle now. An amazing story arc overall. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ There is nothing I can say to justify how wonderful this book is. It was gripping from start to finish. I lost so much sleep while I was reading this as I just couldn‘t put it down. I mean, sigh: 🖤 Fitz and the Fool (our beloved always), and the culmination of the last 9 books rolled into this epic conclusion. Superb. 💗

Oh Robin Hobb, you‘ve touched my heart deeply yet again.

The conclusion of the third trilogy in this world had me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. As soon as Fitz and friends reached Icefyre the dragon‘s island prison, I wanted to do nothing but read. The Fool, Beloved, will always be my beloved.

If you love high fantasy and you‘re looking for a series you could lose yourself in for years, this is it. Seriously. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hobb is an extremely talented storyteller - the best! She has created again a novel that slowly grabs hold of you - and doesn't let you go! She balances giving us so much detail as well as keeping the plot pace tight and engrossing. I love how she can give us a really satisfyingly complex novel, with competing characters, fascinating themes and challenging relationships - whilst entertaining and giving pure joy.

I absolutely love Hobb‘s Realm of the Elderlings series. This was the final book of the Tawny Man Trilogy, and the 9th in the 16 book series. Hobb‘s writing is so enjoyable and I always feel as though I‘m visiting with old friends. She has a tendency to put her characters through the worst, but things mostly turn out fine in the end. Realm of the Elderlings as a series is far better than The Wheel of Time IMO. Start at the beginning. 5⭐️ #2019

rretzler And did I mention, it has dragons! 🐉 5y
TrishB Best fantasy series ever! 5y
rretzler @TrishB I think I would have to agree, although I'm also partial to A Song of Ice and Fire! I've been trying to read Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series because it was voted one of the best 100 novels/series on the Great American Read. I'm on the 4th book, and to me, it pales in comparison with Realm. I can't connect to the characters and the writing falls flat in comparison to Hobbs! (and Martin and Bujold) 5y
See All 7 Comments
readingjedi I'm currently reading Royal Assassin and I'm hysterically excited to know I've got so much more to come. What is the next trilogy? 5y
rretzler @readingjedi After the Farseer Trilogy, there is the Liveship Traders Trilogy, which is about a different set of characters. I actually liked it slightly better than Farseer. But then I liked the Tawny Man Trilogy, which goes back to the Farseer characters even better than Liveship! It‘s a fantastic series! Next up for me is the Rain Wild Chronicles, which goes back to the Liveship characters. Don‘t skip the non-Farseer trilogies. Happy reading 5y
rretzler @readingjedi The Fitz and The Fool Trilogy rounds out the overall series. The last book in it was published in 2017. I‘m really looking forward to the last 7 books! 5y

So people - what‘s your thoughts on reading a series....do you read all the books in one go, maintaining momentum or do you space it out over time??? #readingadvice

susanw I usually space out. Because, once they are done, there‘s nothing left to look forward to. But, I have torn through the odd series... so I guess I‘m no help. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled These look fun! I kinda space them out until I lose interest 🤷‍♀️ 6y
DrexEdit If partly depends on whether the whole series is available yet! I have a list of series that I'm reading that either aren't done or are ongoing. So I probably fall more in the "breaking up the reading" group. 6y
See All 25 Comments
erzascarletbookgasm I space them out too 🙂 6y
DGRachel It really depends on the series, how may books are out, and my mood. If it‘s just a trilogy and all the books are out, there‘s a good chance I‘ll binge it. If it‘s a long running series and/or all the books aren‘t out, then I‘ll space them out so I don‘t get sick of the books. I had a bad experience with Sue Grafton‘s alphabet books and I still can‘t pick up another one without feeling all ragey. 6y
Mitch Ive tended to be a fan of spacing things out @susanw too...but then I‘ve kinda forgotten a bit of the nuance of stuff when I‘ve gone back for book 2/3....... 6y
Mitch Ive tended to be a fan of spacing things out @susanw and @erickas_flyleafunfurled too...but then I‘ve kinda forgotten a bit of the nuance of stuff when I‘ve gone back for book 2/3....... 6y
Mitch When youve spaced things out guys - ever used an audio copy of the previous book to update you / get you back into it before moving on? @DrexEdit @erzascarletbookgasm ? (edited) 6y
Mitch @DGRachel I‘ve not binged a series yet - feel that I might plan to do that during a long winter weekend! 6y
DGRachel I have definitely used audiobooks to refresh my memory of some books when the next in the series comes out (I know I wasn‘t tagged in that question, but I had to weigh in 😂) 6y
Mitch @DGRachel yeah I was going to use my audible credit to refresh me on an NK Jemisin book that I read book 1 and then have left it too long! 6y
Reviewsbylola I am so bad about finishing series but when I usually take a break in between. 6y
robinb If it‘s complete I prefer reading it all straight through to keep it fresh on my mind. But occasionally, if I run across a really good one, I‘ll get hooked and read up to what‘s available. It also depends on my backlog for reviews...sometimes I don‘t have the time then to read them all together. 6y
Caroline2 Hmm, depends! If I get addicted then I‘ll read em all! I did that with the A court of thorn and roses series! I read em all straight through! 👍🏻 6y
wanderinglynn If I like the first book, I tend to get all of them and binge read. 6y
Kalalalatja I can‘t stop myself once I get going! 6y
Mitch Good to know @wanderinglynn and @Kalalalatja I think I‘ve been to strict with myself ! 😂 6y
Mitch @Reviewsbylola that‘s kinda what prompted the thinking! I‘ve got so many series started but not finished, I wondered if I was in good company! 6y
Mitch @Caroline2 I‘m already seeing a great solo diy reading staycation in the cards! 6y
Maewyn If there is a long period between books in a series and the details have become fuzzy I often go to Wikipedia and read through the plot summary of the previous books for a refresher. 6y
Mitch @Maewyn 👍🏼 6y
CouronneDhiver I‘ve never finished a series before... 🙊 6y
Mitch @CouronneDhiver oh no! We should help you fix that! 😁 6y
CouronneDhiver I usually get fed up half way through... 😂 Also, it seems like many series are from genres I don‘t reach for often - fantasy, romance, mystery. 6y

Kalalalatja @Theeclecticreader she is really great! I would start from the beginning (Farseer Trilogy, first book Assassin‘s Apprentice), because all give series are connected, and while the second and fourth series can be read independently, you get a much better understanding of the world and some of the references if you read it from the start 👍 5y

GAAAH, does that title + blurb sound ominous or what?

Robin Hobb is easily one of my favourite authors, and I'm in awe of how she weaves her magic with all the books I've read so far.

But. She's not exactly gentle with her characters. 😖

RealLifeReading What!!! Four days?? I am still on hold for the next book 7y
Kalalalatja @RealLifeReading I was lucky to have a weekend were I was home alone and with not that many plans. Which was a good thing, since once I started these books, I couldn't put them down! 7y
Kalalalatja @elemenopew it was the first time reading it for me, but it was soooo good! 👌 7y

#Itwasagoodday today - I got to read outside because the weather was for once really great. This book just keeps getting better, and I can't wait to find out what happens in the last 100 pages, but also I don't want it to end 🌞

Robothugs I feel that way about the book I'm currently reading! 7y

Kalalalatja @Cinfhen this was the first time in days I actually saw the sky, and when it comes out looking this blue, I can only be happy 💙💙 7y

I have around 300 pages left of this amazing book, but it feels like I have reached the main point of the book already. I don't know how Hobb will fill out the last part, but I am so excited to find out! 👏

So I do genuinely like this books (Tears We Cannot Stop). I will say I feel uncomfortable with/dislike the constant reference to preaching and sermonizing. I get it... I'm just personally allergic to religion. ANYWAY can anyone who has read lots of Robin Hobb tell me why I keep getting super distracted that he keeps calling the reader(s) beloved??

Mariposa_Bookworm Is this supposed to be fantasy? 7y
heikemarie @Mariposa_Bookworm the book pictures is nonfiction - Tears We Cannot Stop. The reference to Beloved is from the book I tagged. 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm Gotcha. It's a weird attempt at a biblical allusion. It's one of those things that would disrupt my reading flow. 7y
heikemarie @Mariposa_Bookworm Yes, he's created a book to mirror the structure of a sermon, and lots of ministers refer to their flock as beloved 😬 it has a special significance in the Fitz and the Fool books from Robin Hobb! Distracting for me as well. 7y
