Stranger Beside Me: The Shocking Inside Story of Serial Killer Ted Bundy (Updated)
Stranger Beside Me: The Shocking Inside Story of Serial Killer Ted Bundy (Updated) | Ann Rule
THE DEFINITIVE WORK OF AMERICAN TRUE CRIME FROM "AMERICA'S BEST TRUE-CRIME WRITER" "(Kirkus Reviews)" Utterly unique in its astonishing intimacy, as jarringly frightening as when it first appeared, Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me" defies our expectation that we would surely know if a monster lived among us, worked alongside of us, appeared as one of us. With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drawing from their correspondence that endured until shortly before Bundy's death, and striking a seamless balance between her deeply personal perspective and her role as a crime reporter on the hunt for a savage serial killer -- the brilliant and charismatic Bundy, the man she thought she knew -- Rule changed the course of true-crime literature with this unforgettable chronicle.

This was compelling. And not from a "he's so hot" kinda way. The fact that he elicited that kind of response from women is just mind boggling. And terrifying. If you're into true crime and haven't read this, I highly recommend it. Though it did make me trust good looking white guys even less than I did before ?

Balibee146 Stacked and just discovered it is currently free on Kindle Unlimited where I am so will explore very soon 13mo
gossamerchild @Balibee146 nice! My only caveat is that the original text is very dated, so just be aware of that. Overall it's so fascinating. 13mo

Up next.
He was rumored to have come through my hometown of Orange Park, FL before he was caught. I have friends that were in sororities at FSU and they STILL pointedly talk about security at their houses. The day he was executed, the radio stations were giving away “Fried Bundy Fingers”for the “x” callers and we all celebrated (and my 8th grade teacher cried). I honestly can‘t believe I‘m just now reading this.

#bookspinbingo

Christy2318 Scariest book I‘ve ever read. I no longer read true crime late at night when I am home alone. 1y
Amiable I used to be obsessed with true crime when I was in my 20s, and read everything I could find about Ted Bundy. I still have nightmares about the scene in the sorority house where one girl gets up to go the bathroom, opens her bedroom door, senses the presence of evil in the hallway, immediately shuts and locks the door and cowers in the room until morning. 🫣 1y
CoverToCoverGirl I rarely read true crime but this is one I have read. Chilling. I found Rule‘s connection fascinating considering what she ultimately did for a living. Such an appropriate title.. you just never know… as my own personal experience has taught me. 1y

GinaKButler @Christy2318 @Amiable Ohhh…I‘m excited! Lately it‘s been hard to pick up a non-fiction, even though I end up really enjoying them. I have an uncle who was a detective and he‘s actually in one of Ann Rule‘s books (he was on Forensic Files also). This is my first book by Rule…I‘ll have to read some others. 1y
Christy2318 @ginakbutler We love Forensic Files! They‘re the perfect length for a little true crime fix & often they are talking about technology that was cutting edge at the time. 1y

How creepy can you make the cover!
I get it, it was the 80s. I just went on a TB curiosity spree and got hold of this. I loved some of the never known insights and specifications of the whole phenomenon. Some details creeped me out, but I anyway wanted to know the psyche of TB. Also, as much as Ann denies it, I could totally see her weird attachment with TB. Currently reading Elizabeth's perspective to know the differences. Let's discuss?

Of course, this is a pic! I loved learning more about Bundy from a woman who knew him personally. Also, it very much reads like her coming to terms with finding out the young man she befriended could be such a horrible man as well. I love the duality of it all.

I am both intrigued and grossed out. It‘s pretty clear that Ann Rule was attracted to Bundy. The way she shades his unassuming girlfriend Liz is weird; particularly taking shots at her looks etc. #truecrime #audiobook #quickreads

IndianBookworm Also, she clearly mentioned the said age gap a few times in a sense like had she been younger or Ted been older. She reduced Liz to a minor character according to me. 2y

At first, I really enjoyed The Stranger Beside Me as a spooky read… but as the end grew closer, and the impact of Bundy‘s crimes became more tangible, it was no longer spooky so much as desperately sad. It‘s a mind-blowing excellent read, but it made me Feel A Lot Of Things (which is a testament, really, to its excellence, and Rule‘s skill as a true crime writer). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m a pretty enormous chicken shit, but while reading the graphic memoir “Murder Book,” I was finally motivated to pick up this classic. I knew very little about Bundy. FUCK THAT GUY. WTF. I‘m still stunned by the odd circumstances of this story and friendship. Ann Rule is so prolific; I‘m curious to read more of her work. Kinda want to read more about Bundy as well, but why??

PS. This cover is hideously insensitive.

CoverToCoverGirl I recently read this one too. I agree that it was quite remarkable that she had a connection to him. You just never know who people really are. When I was a young girl a serial killer lived on my street. He terrorized our whole province over many months. 3y

I haven‘t really read much true crime, but do watch some on TV. I always heard that Ann Rule worked along side Ted Bundy in the early 70‘s, but had no idea that she maintained a friendship with him. Even after she came to the realization that he was guilty of killing 30+ women, she continued to send stamps and small amounts of money to him in prison. She did feel that he should pay for his crimes. 3/5⭐️s

Wife It creeps me the f*ck out how “normal” and charming TB was. Who knows how many TBs there are among us?😱 3y

I want to make this a “pick”, but it took me over two months to finish, so I don‘t think I can. It‘s pretty simple: this is a long ass book. There are interesting chapters in here, but there are definitely a lot of uninteresting chapters. I don‘t regret reading it, but I wouldn‘t recommend it to anyone who‘s not a die-hard true crime fan. Also, some of Ann‘s views on Bundy‘s execution didn‘t sit well with me at the end.

That moment when you spent several hours listening to a new audiobook only to discover it was an abridged version but in no way marked as such 😤

Though honestly it should have dawned on me sooner because I was so confused as to why this had so much praise given how rushed it felt. And frankly Ann's narration is terrible. Welp... at least now I'm on the waitlist for the right one 🙈
