Dragon Keeper
Dragon Keeper: Volume One of the Rain Wilds Chronicles | Robin Hobb
51 posts | 65 read | 56 to read
Enter the spellbinding world of dragons . . . and those who tend themOne of the most gifted fantasy authors writing today, New York Times bestselling author Robin Hobb has dazzled readers with brilliantly imaginative, emotionally resonant, and compulsively readable tales set in far-flung realms not unlike our own. In this enthralling new novel, she returns to the territory of her beloved Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies with a story of dragons and humans, return and rebirth, and the search for meaning, belonging, and home. For years, the Trader cities valiantly battled their enemies, the Chalcedeans. But they could not have staved off invasion without the powerful dragon Tintaglia. In return, the Traders promised to help her serpents migrate up the Rain Wild River after a long exile at seato find a safe haven and, Tintaglia hopes, to restore her species. But too much time has passed, and the newly hatched dragons are damaged and weak, and many die. The few who survive cannot use their wings; earthbound, they are powerless to hunt and vulnerable to human predators willing to kill them for the fabled healing powers of dragon flesh. But Tintaglia has vanished and the Traders are weary of the labor and expense of tending useless dragons. The Trader leadership fears that if it stops providing for the young dragons, the hungry and neglected creatures will rampageor die along the river's acidic muddy banks. To avert catastrophe, the dragons decree a move even farther up the treacherous river to Kelsingra, their ancient, mythical homeland whose mysterious location is locked deep within the dragons' uncertain ancestral memories. To ensure their safe passage, the Traders recruit a disparate group of young people to care for the damaged creatures and escort them to their new home. Among them is Thymara, an unschooled forest girl of sixteen, and Alise, a wealthy Trader's wife trapped in a loveless marriage, who attaches herself to the expedition as a dragon expert. The two women share a deep kinship with the dragons: Thymara can instinctively communicate with them, and Alise, captivated by their beauty and majesty, has devoted her life to studying them. Embarking on an arduous journey that holds no promise of return, the band of humans and dragons must make their way along the toxic and inhospitable Rain Wild Riveran extraordinary odyssey that will teach them lessons about themselves and one another, as they experience hardships, betrayals, and joys beyond their wildest dreams.

Sad to #dnf this, but I just don‘t like it. The characters are not very engaging and just horrible things are happening to the women/female characters which I just don‘t wish to read about anymore. I think I will just jump to the Fitz & the Fool series and pass on the Rainwilds - which is generally disliked. #hailthebail

"The thought burned in her like molten iron and suddenly hardened into cold resolve. She was not going to be 'allowed' to do anything. Never again would she submit to being 'allowed' or 'not allowed'. She would follow her resolve if it killed her. For being killed by it would certainly be better than going home and dying of not being allowed to follow her dream."

Pure magic! I was hesitant to start this series as I didn‘t want to take a break from Fitz and his story, but this was so good!
I got so invested in the story and the characters.
Most are new characters and some we get to see again from the Liveship Traders books, which was fun.
The new characters are just as amazing, interesting, despicable and wonderful as what we have already experienced from Robin Hobb. I can‘t wait to start the next one!

If you have difficulty reading about a young person being seduced by a predator, a woman choosing married to try to escape poverty and isolation in a traditional patriarchal society, and dragons (and humans) who are not born “healthy” or “viable” dealing with being abandoned/killed/shunned, do not read this book. If you can deal with a heart wrenching story full of self delusion and struggle towards self realization/hope, read this book.

AiBBot There is no resolutions to any issues by the end of this book. I feel exhausted and I need to read another light read before continuing this series that hits so close to home in so many ways. It is brilliant. 6y

For being partially narrated by a dragon this was seriously lacking in dragons.
The characters were descently fleshed out but I didn't connect with any of them. I found the writing quite repetitive, lots of over explaining.
The world building was done well but I don't think I'll continue with the series.
This should have a Trigger Warning for sexual asult.

4/10 💫

Reading a Robin Hobb novel feels a bit like coming home ❤️ This was a good introduction to new characters and new plot lines, but it did feel a bit just like that - an introduction. Also, the writing felt a bit more repetitive than I remember from Hobb‘s other novels. However, it had me gripped from the first page, and I loved getting to know more about the dragons and the Rain Wild people. And I‘m feeling some strong female MCs in the making! 💪

Sophoclessweetheart I love Robin Hobb. 🖤 I always feel this way about Terry Pratchett. His books always feel like home x 6y

Soubhiville @Foragingfantasy I really like her. I believe she just writes series, but I can't say for sure... I've read the first books in three of them- Assassin's Apprentice , Ship of Magic, and now The Dragon Keeper. I have the second Ship book on my shelf and will probably get to it this year, lol! 7y

Soubhiville @Foragingfantasy ❤️ you're welcome! This is one of the more recent trilogies, so if you like it I'd look up which trilogy came first and go in order. I think all her books are in the same fantasy realm, but I'm not positive... and I think Assassin's Apprentice is her first book. 7y

This felt less like a book but the first part of a book, which I understand happens in series sometimes but really 400+ pages of set-up was a bit much, especially when it hasn't gotten me invested enough in either the story or the characters to make mere particularly interested in reading the next book.

Pheonixlike But please tell me you read the next book?!?! 😱 7y

For @RealLifeReading's #AprilBookShowers: #DropEverythingAndRead

As you can tell by the laundry in the background, Robin Hobb has overtaken my life. 😄
Today's photo challenge lines up with a #ReadingChallenge of my own. One of my goals this year is to read an author's entire bibliography, and so far I've read the stack on the left along with the standalone. I hope to finish the rest in the #RealmoftheElderlings before May's book release!

mrsthilkey Recommendations for someone who's never read any Hobb? Where to begin?! 8y
KCorter @Born.A.Reader Thanks! I don't think I have ever read every book by an author straight in a row. It is quite an undertaking... but I feel like I am starting to understand her as both a writer and a person. 8y
KCorter @jfalkens It was fantastic. ? Seriously though, it was so elegantly developed. I love character-driven stories, especially as a series. Robin Hobb's fascinating plots and skill at world-building set a stage for her characters to shine. Not once did the story drag, and that's an impressive feat for a trilogy. Fitz was one of the most "real" characters I have ever met. I could read 100 books about him and The Fool. 8y
jfalkens @KCorter Thank you 😊 maybe I'll have to take the copy from my husband's to-read pile and make sure he reads it too ☺ 8y
KCorter @mrsthilkey I started with Ship of Magic and read the Liveship Traders trilogy. I would suggest starting with Assassin's Apprentice. It is Robin Hobb's first book, and sets the stage for most of the other books she has written. I think I would have more fully appreciated the Liveship Traders if I had read The Farseer trilogy first. Piebald Prince is also a good stand-alone, since it is a tale referenced through the rest of her series. 8y
KCorter @annkuch13 Right?! Robin Hobb is my literary love. 8y
booksandsympathy I have these books but have never read them. They were given to me by my Uncle-in-law's ex wife. I'm sure I was just meant to borrow them, but I doubt I'll ever see her again. I will eventually get around to them. 8y
KCorter @jfalkens That's what I did! @acorter raved over Robin Hobb after reading the Farseer Trilogy. We even named our ferret after Fitz. 😊 I finally read The Liveship Traders on a whim last year, and I am so glad I did. In my very biased opinion, Robin Hobb may be the most talented (current) author in any genre. 8y
mrsthilkey Cool, thanks!! 8y
KCorter @booksandsympathy If you're like me, your TBR list is longer than your life. I highly recommend Robin Hobb though. Never have I read an author who can write so thoroughly and so engagingly on any subject. Culture, economics, politics, international relations, family dynamics, responsibility, honor, choice, fate, intrigue, adventure, magic... She weaves it all into her stories and I hang on every word. 8y
booksandsympathy @KCorter Yes, my tbr list is way too long. But since I do actually have these books on my shelf, that is a reminder to read them. I'm sure there are lots of books on my tbr that will fall by the wayside because it's difficult to find them. I don't really have an excuse with these. I'm slowly making my way through my bookshelves. 8y
KCorter @booksandsympathy That's what I am attempting to do this year too! So many of these books have been staring out at my from the bookshelves for years. I don't even know what treasures I've yet to discover. That's the fun of a book collection though. You know there is always something to read right at your fingertips. 😊 8y
elemenopew Oh my god. I remember when, a couple of years ago, I was a Robin Hob ZOMBIE. She was all I could read. Her books were all I could think about. I gave up so much sleep and everything else to finish these books and they were SO FREAKING WORTH IT. 8y
elemenopew Damnit, autocorrect. *Hobb 8y
KCorter @elemenopew That perfectly describes me right now! I am obsessed. I can't focus on anything else because I am absolutely lost in the world Robin Hobb has created. 8y
KCorter @elemenopew P.S. I totally have to correct my spelling mistakes as well. I think all of us word junkies will breate easier when Listy creates an "edit comment" function. Haha ? 8y
KCorter Case in point: *Breathe 8y
elemenopew @KCorter she reallly sucks you in, doesn't she? I haven't read the Rain Wild Chronicles yet, but Farseer and Tawny man just took over my world. The writing. The pace. Fitz and the Fool. AND OH GOD NIGHTEYES. 8y
elemenopew @KCorter haha, I reflexively looked for it and then had to remind myself we don't have that yet. 😅 8y
AlaMich I've read the Assassin and the Liveship trilogies. They were both great but I really loved Liveship. Agreed that one should start with Assassin. I'm looking forward to Rain Wild Chronicles and Tawny Man!👍 8y
KCorter @elemenopew I was so emotionally invested in Fitz and The Fool. I mean, probably to an unhealthy extent. 😄 and Nighteyes' sassiness was HILARIOUS. 8y
KCorter @AlaMich I loved the Liveship Traders. We revisit some of those characters in the Rain Wild Chronicles! I warn you though, the Tawny Man trilogy is an emotional ride. 8y

Loved this!!!!!

My journey through Hobbs Realm of the Elderlings continues. Read the first three trilogies last year and am finally on to the Rain Wilds quartet. It's been a long time that I've read a book this long in only a couple days.

At this rate I may actually be caught up by the time Asassins Fate comes out in May.

KCorter I'm trying to catch up in time for the release of Assassin's Fate as well! I just started this one today. :) 8y
Otherworld_Library I really loved the Rain Wilds quartet! I finished Fools Assassin and Fools Quest but didn't get around to reviewing them here. I liked the second one better than the first, which sort of felt like a book length prologue at times. But I'm all caught up and ready for Assassins Fate. @KCorter 8y

This was clearly not meant to be a standalone book. It's a bit slow to get going and only feels half way into the story by the time you get to the end. I'll have to read volume 2 to finish this story.

LibrarianRyan I'm jealous of your rainbow shelves. I tried to rainbow mine but they are all shades of black. 8y
Soubhiville @LibrarianRyan the black/ gray/ white section is much bigger! 8y
Lizpixie I just did mine as well! The black section is three times bigger than any other colour.🌈 8y

This would be a pick, except for the cliffhanger ending-it didn't feel like a natural place to stop. I don't remember Robin Hobb's other books ending this way- they still felt like complete stories.

I'm still really looking forward to reading the rest of this series though.

And I am in love with this candle, the wax is in little triangle shapes, it is so cute 💚 I got it yesterday as part of a gift for the end of my term on the study associatoin board.
