Historical fiction about a girl who gets herself admitted to an asylum to help save her recently committed sister and finds the conditions not as advertised and that many of the women there were not admitted because they were insane. An interesting read although I didn‘t care much for Charlotte‘s backstory especially her romance. The ending was a bit too tidy for me but overall I enjoyed this.
After a long but successful show weekend. I am finally digging in to the next #LMPBC book. @ShelleyBooksie @Tianarose @michellelav

In the late 1800s, Goldengrove was promoted as a #hospital where mental illness could be cured with innovative treatment. Charlotte doesn't believe her sister Phoebe belongs there so fakes her own illness in order to rescue her. But, first Charlotte has to find her. Loved it! I don't have a picture of such a place, but I do have a pic of the author at a library event! .#SavvySettings @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs

Late 1800‘s San Francisco. Charlotte Smith‘s parents commit her sister, Phoebe, to an asylum. She fakes madness & follows her sister inside. She becomes inmate Woman 99. She finds many women are not insane. Powerful people do not want the secrets to get out. Gripping story of the power of female courage. All things turned around & made for a great ending for Charlotte & Phoebe. This historical book is recommended!
I was thoroughly engaged with this historical fiction about a young woman who, inspired by Nellie Bly, bluffs her way into an asylum to rescue her sister. I would have loved to learn more about some of the other women, as they were fascinating characters (particularly Martha and Nora), and would have happily read a much longer book to get to know them!

Charlotte‘s parents have placed her sister in an asylum in 1888 and Charlotte believes this move unwarranted. So she gets herself secretly committed to the same asylum as woman 99 to try to rescue her. The asylum portions are harrowing and well-done but I found a backstory dragged a bit. Overall, I enjoyed it.
A woman goes in all Nellie Bly style to rescue her sister from an asylum, but naturally things go awry!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Such a well-written and intense novel!!! Captured my interest from start to finish!
I REALLY enjoyed this book! It held my attention the entire time and I finished it within 2 days because I had a hard time putting it down. I felt it to be the perfect ending.
Quick trip to NYC today to talk at a luncheon about Woman 99! Usually I wear my hair back at book events but this time I indulged in a blowout. Something about New York just encourages indulgence, I guess!

I am so lucky to be your 999th follower! Each book is so thoughtfully chosen and I can‘t wait to start reading them! The best thing is though, I feel like I have a new book friend 😊
I so enjoyed this book from the naivety of thinking you can do anything to the realization that it‘s false to the possibility that things may change. Unbelievably beautiful and sad and well written of the times. This book makes me want to go searching for more information on asylums.
@Beatlefan129 You are the winner of my secret #giveaway! I have an extra signed copy of Woman 99, so I decided that I would send it to whomever turned out to be my 999th follower. That's you! Just contact me with your address at lynneamch@gmail.com
I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
I do not read either thriller, or historical fiction very often. Woman 99 is a good historical thriller. I discovered it from an ad and thought it sounded like something my best friend would read. So we did a buddy read. We agree the main character is not very bright, but that doesn't taint the book too much. The ending was perfect.
"So, I set myself to a task of #deceit and trickery, though it went against everything I'd been taught, for the sake of my sister. After all, I had a duty to rescue Phoebe from the asylum. It was my fault she was there."
Bookish highlight of the holiday week: a visit to our local #library from the oh-so-charming and talented Greer Macallister. #QuotsyJuly19 @TK-421 #historicalfiction #histfic

If your sister was committed involuntary to a mental illness institution, would you jump off a bridge to follow and save her? That‘s what Charlotte does, in 1888 California. Her choice is naïve but exemplary, and she has to muster *all* her resources to save her sister. The story was propulsive. Once I hit 50% it was unputdownable. Macallister is now a must-buy for me.

Yes folks, I‘m 24 likes away from 100,000. With a much less hectic work schedule I would have had the celebration planned, but this snuck up on me. So I haven‘t decided whether my celebratory GIVEAWAY will be for the person whose like makes me reach 100 grand or the 25th person who makes me reach 100,001 or a random drawing of everyone who comments on this post or something else. So like and comment away and I promise a giveaway to come! 💥🎉🎊
Hoping this feels like a quick audiobook. Last book I read by this author was unputdownable. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
What a good book!!! Charlotte‘s sister is taken to a mental institution, so she gets herself committed. The story that follows is sad, infuriating, and hopeful. This is eye opening as to the deplorable treatment of women throughout history. I found myself feeling so many emotions and rooting for all these poor souls. Part romance, part suspense, and big part historical fiction. Highly recommend!!! 💜💜💜
Sisters, madness, an asylum, an escape - what‘s not to like??
Last weekend I went to the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville. I went to a panel where Greer Macallister speak. I just had to read it. While I wouldn‘t consider it a thriller as it was billed, I enjoyed the book and would most definitely recommend it. Who wouldn‘t be interested in a book where the narrator gets herself admitted to an asylum to save her sister?
