Coincidence of Coconut Cake
Coincidence of Coconut Cake | Amy E Reichert
"You ve Got Mail" meets "How to Eat a Cupcake "in this delightful novel about a talented chef and the food critic who brings down her restaurant whose chance meeting turns into a delectable romance of mistaken identities. In downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet struggling French restaurant, Luella s, into a success. She cheerfully balances her demanding business and even more demanding fiance until the morning she discovers him in the buff with an intern. Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee newspaper under a pseudonym. When an anonymous tip sends him to Luella s, little does he know he s arrived on the worst day of the chef s life. The review practically writes itself: underdone fish, scorched sauce, distracted service he unleashes his worst. The day that Al s mean-spirited review of Luella s runs, the two cross paths in a pub: Lou drowning her sorrows, and Al celebrating his latest publication. As they chat, Al playfully challenges Lou to show him the best of Milwaukee and she s game but only if they never discuss work, which Al readily agrees to. As they explore the city s local delicacies and their mutual attraction, Lou s restaurant faces closure, while Al s column gains popularity. It s only a matter of time before the two fall in love but when the truth comes out, can Lou overlook the past to chase her future? Set in the lovely, quirky heart of Wisconsin, "The Coincidence of Coconut Cake "is a charming love story of misunderstandings, mistaken identity, and the power of food to bring two people together."

I decided to listen to this book to give this author another try after I didn't like a different book I had read. So, I went into this with low expectations. But, it surprised me. The story drew me in from the beginning. It was predictable, but let's face it, most romance books are. This one was cute, yet I didn't find it overly sweet. There was a good balance to it.

I put this one on my TBR stack solely based on the delicious-looking coconut cake on the cover! I enjoyed this somewhat-predictable rom-com about a relationship gone wrong, a bad restaurant review, and an unexpected friendship that turns to love.

Lou discovers her fiancé in a compromising position, has a horrible shift at work...and of course it‘s the day Al reviews her restaurant. Thanks to his review, her restaurant starts to lose business and she‘ll be forced to close if things don‘t turn around. Meanwhile Al falls in love with Lou, changes his outlook on Milwaukee, it‘s food, people and culture, and is scared to lose Lou if she finds out who he is. Very predictable, but not a bad read.

Light and fluffy and just what the doctor ordered. Romance is no longer my go to genre but every once in a while you need some brain candy. The two main characters were charming and the supporting cast was absolutely adorable. Otto and Gertrude came very close to stealing the show in my opinion.

My only complaint was the narrators voice when doing Al - the male main character. A little too high pitched. Otherwise a solid pick in my eyes.

This was a fun, light read, nothing exciting or memorable. Amy Reichert‘s A Simplicity of Cider definitely showed her growth as a writer when compared to this one. The true star of this book is Milwaukee, Reichert‘s love for the city shines through.

This was the first book I‘ve read by this author. I enjoy books that center around food so much. I have another in my to reads called The Simplicity if Cider as well. This book has a unique story...got a little slow in the middle...but finished strong. A rather predictable ending, but had a few charming twists as well. A light read. Good for vacationing.
