Finished this one over breakfast! When an author‘s debut is as outstanding as Homegoing was, the expectations for the next one can be hard to live up to. I tried to keep that in mind as I read. I did enjoy her first book more, but this is still an excellent book, about a postdoctoral neuroscience candidate coming to terms with her childhood, her faith, and the tragedies of the past.

One of my close friends is Columbian, and we used to get together weekly for brunch when our kids were younger. Pan de Bono and hot cocoa were a staple of our gatherings! I haven‘t seen her since Feb, (thanks, Covid), but we had a FaceTime breakfast this morning to discuss A Promised Land, which we‘re both reading! I cheated, and bought these little bites at Costco instead of making pan de Bono from scratch.

Love Julie Andrews so much. But how did she (and all of these other old school Hollywood celebs for that matter) think her kids were going to have a comprehensive education when they went to a new school every 3 months? #beenwonderingthisforawhile #hollywoodiswild

One great thing about having a middle schooler now? She gets free rein to make breakfast in the kitchen. She was the only one hungry for pancakes, but she did such a good job that we all had some!

And she found my 🐄 creamer container. 😊

Giving this one another go while Maya has a fruit smoothie disguised as milkshake before heading back to school. Everyone seems to be mostly healthy again in our house!

Finished Book Two over breakfast this morning, Maya is still reading it. This volume gets deep into some of the most violent moments during the Civil Rights era. I have such a profound and deep respect for resistors like John Lewis who stood firm on their principles of civil disobedience and nonviolence in the face of such despicable acts of violence against them.
