#wickedwhispers @eggs @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

When Stephen King isn't looking into the evil in the hearts of ordinary men, he is often projecting that evil in the form of Randall Flagg, who often goes by an alias that maintains the “R.F.“ initials.

Any suggestions?

I reread The Stand every couple of years. Sometimes I listen to the audio, sometimes I do the ebook, but this time I was feeling nostalgic and pulled out my 1991 copy that was my first ever King experience. It's falling apart a bit (30+ years and multiple reads will do that), so I'm just hoping it'll hold together for this read.

Do you have any old books that you still pull out and read even though their condition is questionable?

Ruthiella The only physical book I feel that kind of affection for is Martin Chuzzlewit. It‘s not Dickens‘ best work but it‘s the one I read first. My Penguin paperback doesn‘t match my other Dickens books but I can‘t give it away. 2mo
Beatlefan129 I have my mom‘s copy of The Outsiders from the 1970s. It‘s falling apart because we both read it so many times 2mo
Traci1 @Beatlefan129 oh I love that. I've got some of my mom's Kinsey Milhone paperbacks that we shared back in the 80s and 90s. 2mo

I was held hostage for over a month reading this brick. The book is too long and I didn‘t need all the details. Yet the fantastical prose combined with religious allegories kept me turning the page to see what was next. The book possesses several themes, but the greatest is that evil will always exist in the world and that it‘s up to us to overcome it. But be wary of power and political systems.

“I‘ve come to teach you how to be civilized.”

Getting a late start on my new SK project this year (due to taking January to finish off last year's project). I still hope to average one a month and get through the 24 books on my extended Dark Tower list by the end of 2025. However, this utter brick of a book will take as long as it takes! I'll catch up later.

I first read King‘s opus when I was 13 years old - the thought of a global plague as inconceivable as King‘s other supernatural creations. It was unsettling to reread this in the age of COVID, and while King‘s literal battle between God and the Devil may not be playing out today as he imagined, it‘s difficult not to sometimes feel that we might be living in a version of King‘s post-plague world. ⬇️

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks Kings‘s storytelling is incredible here - giving each character, no matter how minor, a richness and backstory integral to the overall saga. Every shade of humanity and morality is represented, and each character feels unique and real. Everything in this book has meaning. ⬇️ 1y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks There are some problems with the novel and at times, it IS cringingly problematic. But I simply can‘t deny the impact and influence this novel has had on me for almost 30 years. If an apocalypse should occur in my remaining lifetime, I hope I‘ll fall in with the Stus, Frannies, and Nicks of the world. 5⭐️ (edited) 1y

There's a reason many readers of King list The Stand as their favorite - it's an incredible book. The way King weaves so many disparate threads into an apocalyptic tapestry is masterful, and his ability to make you care for a plethora of characters is put to excellent use here. From the first inkling that something in the machinations of man has gone awry to the final sobering ruminations on our ultimate nature, this is a truly riveting read. 5/5
