Rooms | Lauren Oliver
After a number of highly acclaimed New York Times bestsellers, including the Delirium trilogy and the standalone novels Before I Fall and Panic, Lauren Oliver returns with a spellbinding tale that confirms her place as one of our finest storytellers. Fueled by the same inspired feel for plot and character that drew readers to Oliver's earlier works, Rooms is a mesmerizing and suspenseful story of guilt, love, and family secrets.Estranged patriarch Richard Walker has died, leaving behind a country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His alienated familybitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minnahave arrived for their inheritance. But the Walkers are not alone. Alice and Sandra, two long-dead and restless ghosts, linger within the house's claustrophobic walls, bound eternally to its physical structure. Jostling for space and memory, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itselfin the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a lightbulb. The living and dead are haunted by painful truths that surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collidewith cataclysmic results. Elegantly constructed and brilliantly paced, Rooms is an enticing and imaginative ghost story and a searing family drama that is as haunting as it is resonant.

I enjoyed how every chapter took place from the perspective of a different character. There were some points in the story where I would get the two ghosts confused. I enjoyed the mystery of what happened in the lives of the characters that made them who they are but the whole story I felt was just lacking something. Not really a chilling story, more so just a lackluster haunted house with a very dramatic family that needs to seek therapy.

This book takes place in a house, with each chapter centering on a room. The story is told through multiple point of views, from the ghosts who live within the house and the family members who come to bury their estranged father/husband. The book is ethereal and looks at difficult and real situations from an interesting perspective, but it took awhile for me to feel invested and it just wasn‘t my cup of tea.

Literally could not put this book down! Have you ever heard the expression, if walls could talk? Meet the Walker family, messy, dysfunctional and torn apart meeting together to clean up their late husband/fathers estate--rooms filled with the detritus of life and death. Told from each person's and three ghost's perspectives, this house has dark secrets.

Oliver's writing style is elegant, haunting, and a bit distant, like wind in the trees. I loved the shifting perspectives and the slow piecing together of everyone's hidden hurts. The ending is lovely and hugely satisfying as everything clicks together and the last of the secrets are let loose.

The skill Oliver shows in creating a rich atmosphere caused me to feel a lot of peripheral discomfort that haunted me long after I put the book down.

Just started this one, but I just can't continue tonight. I'm calling it quits with the #readathon at 19 hours. I didn't do as well this time. Too many distractions, but I did complete a physical book, an ebook and an audiobook. I'm quite happy with that. Good luck to everyone who is continuing. You got this!

"Oh the secrets these walls could tell" is brought to life by Oliver. Ghosts, especially The Past, abound, watching, waiting, unlocking secrets room by room.
As a story that begins with fire and which, in truth, feels like it might burst into a roaring fire at any moment, it is the most appropriate for "fire" on my #autumnbingo card. @Tiffy_Reads

Finished this audiobook tonight, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me a while to get through, as it's been a very busy week, but I'm glad I renewed it because it was very intriguing, especially towards the end. I quite liked the characters, and will definitely be suggesting this book to friends.

Okay. I hate giving bad reviews. I just don't do it. I didn't enjoy this book- HOWEVER the writing was superb. The author proves yet again that she has a way with words. The story itself wasn't my cup of tea. It's not that anything was wrong with it, but it when I was finished, I was relieved. The characters made me sad. Many had no redeeming qualities and just felt like morally ambiguous people (at best) or simply bad people (at worst).

This was a weird, sad, disturbing, beautiful little novel. It was really different from everything else Oliver has ever written, which is perhaps why people who are used to her work weren't fans, but I really liked it. It was beautifully written, of course, with shifting narrators and a tremendous amount of subtlety as well as misdirection, which made it a bit hard to follow at times, but it came together nicely in the end. 7/10 ⭐️

This story has slow pacing + multiple POV's. I like the characters just fine, but never felt a deep connection to this cast (possibly because it takes a while to piece together character backstories). Of all the POV's, I think Alice the ghost + Trenton the son are probably my favorites.

Tried this in print + audio but I dropped the audio: too many POV's. Full cast though, if that's your thing.

Not bad, not great. Just moving onto the next story.

Bette I like Oliver normally, I totally agree: not bad, not great. I was kind of: so what? on the last page. 8y
