Librarybelle It was an odd statement about killing versus murdering someone—based on the intent. I‘ve never thought of it that way…another thing to ponder. It seemed odd to me that Holmes let the inspector arrest the wrong man, only later to tell the inspector it was wrong. But, Holmes said a couple of times he did not have all of the facts of the case. Still seems strange that he appeared to be in agreement initially. 1w
CogsOfEncouragement Hmmm, it was self defense, right? It was definitely more force than necessary, but maybe if one gets so comfortable using a harpoon maybe one loses sight of how dramatic it is to use it on a man with murder in his eyes?

I felt SH knew in that moment he couldn't convince Hopkins that it wasn't Neligan, he needed to gather the convincing evidence for Hopkins to see his mistake. Neligan was not in comfort, but would be okay for another day or so.
7d
See All 7 Comments
dabbe I also think Holmes was ticked off at Neligan for not telling the entire truth, which could be why he let him go to jail for a bit. I also don't know if I take Hopkins word that it was self-defense; he could just as easily been the first to grab the harpoon and then have Carey pull the knife after. We'll never know totally because Carey is dead. Perhaps kill means just to end a life, while murder implies absolute intent. 7d
CogsOfEncouragement @dabbe Interesting point that maybe SH was annoyed with Neligan. Let him learn to not provide partial info that doesn‘t add up to the clues left at the scene. 7d
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement I think SH in the past has even let the bad guy go (if he wasn't a murderer) as long as he was honest with his story. I swear, if Sherlock asked me to tell the story and leave nothing out, I'd sit up straighter in my chair and say, “Yes, sir!“ 😂 6d

Librarybelle This ties into my response to the last question…the rich can pay for silence, while those with less are left to pay for the crime. It‘s not right, yet we‘ve seen Holmes make some questionable choices over justice in prior stories. 3w
Bookwomble "Send him to Australia and forget about his despicableness. If it's not happening in England, it's not happening!" ? 3w
dabbe I know Holmes has accepted awards in the past for his services (especially by the upper-class society), but it really bugs me that he knowingly takes a BRIBE here. An extra $6000 for silence. This act falls in with the idea that our heroes aren't always perfect, but when I've read this in the past, it never really struck me that that is what he's doing. The other times didn't seem so blatant. Maybe he does really need the money. 3w
See All 7 Comments
AnishaInkspill I'm not sure the extra is a bribe or if Holmes felt he earnt it for what he pieced together. I am also wondering if he thought this was a more sensitive way to handle this complex case then embarrass the duke ??? 3w
dabbe @AnishaInkspill I love that you're giving good ol' SH the benefit of the doubt. I'm wondering if he'd do the same thing for no money for someone less noble than the duke. 3w
AnishaInkspill @dabbe now that's an interesting question. Just based on this story, I'm left with the impression that he doesn't work for free, it ends with himself as a poor man.

Would SH do the same for someone less noble? I think there's a possibility if he doesn't care for titles and class but I haven't read enough of these to know for sure..
3w
dabbe @AnishaInkspill I've read them all, and it's still a question for me! 😂 3w

Librarybelle What struck me the most was Holmes‘ discussion with the Duke about which son he is protecting—the young one, who I‘m sure will have trauma forever, or his older son that he feels he must protect at all costs. Not necessarily a class issue, but the Duke uses his money to buy silence and protect his eldest son. The wealthy can pay hush money, while those who also participated (Hayes) from another class are left to pay for the crime. 3w
Cuilin The fact is if there wasn‘t such a strict adherence to society‘s laws and expectations, the eldest son would be the heir. It begs the question whether James was inherently reprobate or was his behavior born through the lack of recognition? 3w
dabbe @Cuilin Good point. The duke was totally in love with his mother, so perhaps she was a lovely lady. The being left out of the inheritance might be what drove Wilder to act so heinously. 3w
dabbe @Librarybelle I also can't recall how many times Watson reiterated that the duke wanted to protect the family name at all costs. Even leaving the younger heir--whom he supposedly adored--to suffer in that tavern for three days shows that the #1 love in the duke's life is his family name and not the actual people who carry said name. 3w

Librarybelle The part that me on edge in relation to geography was when Holmes and Watson were following the bike trail. The hills, the ground, the twists and turns, and then the evidence leading to the gruesome discovery. The landscape played a good role in that for me. 3w
Cuilin I love a mystery involving a map and all the deductions that go with it. 3w
dabbe For me, the remote countryside setting amplifies the sense of isolation and urgency. It reminded me of the time when SH told Watson that crimes committed in the country were the worst of all. The Priory School's secluded location heightens the difficulty of the search and adds a layer of suspense. The rugged terrain, including the moors and cliffs, is not only a physical obstacle but also symbolizes the danger and complexity of the mystery. (edited) 3w
dabbe @Librarybelle Agree 💯. 3w

Very similar to his Memoirs except for the first story but I won‘t spoil the surprise. My favorite amongst the 13 tales was The Second Stain. A high profile case that could have led to A World War or scandal had it not been for the inquisitive Holmes and his ever curious side-kick Watson. An enjoyable read. Highly recommended for a bus ride to work as you could easily get through one tale in a half hours time.

The great thing about Doyle, is that because we're used to the way Sherlock Holmes speaks, there's very little dialogue that's misunderstood

It's been a while, but I got back into reading through Sherlock. My only complaint about this collection of short stories is how abruptly each of them ends. But, since they were probably published as serials in a magazine or a newspaper, there was probably a word count range. ⭐⭐⭐✨/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I liked the variety, as well as seeing the more intuitive and compassionate aspects of Holmes.

I am torn on this one. There were things I liked, yet for some reason I didn‘t truly enjoy it. It may be partly that I tried on audio first while replacing knives on the hay conditioner, then realized I wasn‘t concentrating enough and started over in #SerialReader when I got home. It also felt somewhat predictable to me in that the easy answer being wrong was too obvious.

Something tells me Sherlock might agree with Henry Miller on #travel - “One's destination is never a place, but always a new way of seeing things.” Sherlock likes to see the scene of a crime for himself. I wonder what‘s in Norway?

In this #mystery we see Sherlock‘s curiosity and, as noted by Einstein, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. CSeydel @corycatelyn aw! That‘s so sweet! Yeah I‘m finding out teenagers don‘t “do” email. I practically have to text her myself to get a response, and we live in the same house 🤪 6y
corycatelyn Lol yeah my daughter and I text in the same room sometimes 😂 6y
tjwill Yes, the things that Sherlock assumes are beyond my reasoning at times! 6y

I had a good week, but it included a lot of interaction with people I had just met. Today, I was happy to get back to the beautiful outdoors (Yay for rain this week and cooler temps!) and farm work. I read part of this story waiting at the end of the field and finished when I got back to the house.

I liked the story, but nothing really impressed me, although the harpoon was an interesting choice.

CoffeeNBooks I haven't quite decided how I felt about this one. 🤔 6y

Next up for #Sherlocked: “The Adventure of Black Peter”

Originally published in 1904 in Strand Magazine and Collier‘s

Daisey Haven‘t had a chance to start this one but hoping to read or listen to all of it later today. 6y
tjwill @Daisey I switched between listening and Serial reader and read it all on Thursday. I enjoyed this one. 6y

Finished another issue, The Adventure of the Priory School. This may be my favorite so far in this collection. Some unexpected twists and turns.

tjwill I liked this one too. 6y
Daisey I really liked this one and the dancing men, to the point that I don‘t know that I can choose between them. 6y
CoffeeNBooks I found this one to be pretty interesting, with all of the layers of the story becoming apparent once Holmes spoke with the Duke. 6y

I enjoyed this one more than the previous story. It was a bit more twisty and better showed Sherlock using his skills to figure things out.

Daisey I thought the deceptive horseshoes from the Middle Ages were a fun aspect of this story. 6y

CoffeeNBooks @Daisey I thought so too! 6y

Thanks for sharing this, @Daisey ! I love a good book map! #sherlocked

Daisey You‘re welcome! I really appreciated when others shared the dancing men drawings the other day, so I thought it was worthwhile to look this map up to share too. 6y

Next up is “The Adventure of the Priory School” and it starts off with more of a mystery than the last one. I‘m intrigued and enjoying this one so far. I looked up the sketch of the map if anyone is interested, although the writing is not very clear.

Who else is reading this one and what are your thoughts?

#Sherlocked #readalong #SerialReader

thereadingowlvina Just started on this one. Doing part audiobook and part reading 😁 6y
JazzFeathers I'm behind with this. Still have to read The Solitary Cyclist and considering listening to it. I saw that free sudiobooks of all the stories are awailable on youtube 6y
Daisey @thereadingowlvina I‘m not sure I could split up one of the short stories easily. When I switched to audio a few days ago, I started the story over to hear the whole thing. That said, I really enjoy alternating between text and audio for some of the different stories. 6y

I wasn‘t impressed with this one. There was really very little mystery to solve and the characters were incredibly one dimensional.

tjwill I agree. This has been my least favorite of this collection so far. 😕 6y
JazzFeathers Listened to this one. Wasn't very impressed either 6y

Reposting the schedule in case we have more people interested in joining the #Sherlocked #readalong of The Return of Sherlock Holmes. We‘re using #SerialReader for pacing and are currently on “The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist.”

Hosted by @tjwill and @Daisey

thereadingowlvina I'm enjoying this so far! Thanks for hosting 😊 6y
Daisey @thereadingowlvina So glad you‘re enjoying it! 6y
catebutler Enjoying the short stories so far! Serial really does make it easy to read these. 6y

I hadn‘t checked in for #sherlocked in a couple days. How‘s everyone doing? Did you enjoy “The Adventure of the Dancing Men”? Anyone try figuring out the code? I love a mystery with a secret code.

Now we are into “The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist,” which was not one of ACD‘s favorites of his stories. Let‘s see if we feel the same.

Remember that if you have to skip any stories, that‘s ok. Join back in at any time!

tjwill I‘m just going to add that I finished and I did not care for this story because of the sexism. I read somewhere that ACD‘s contemporaries didn‘t like it because it didn‘t have enough Sherlock. 6y
CoffeeNBooks This wasn't one of my favorite stories. Especially after the Dancing Men, which I really enjoyed. 6y
tjwill @CoffeeNBooks Yes, it definitely suffers in comparison. 6y

My family is baling hay again today, so this morning I got the baler ready. Greasing the baler can be a messy job, but it was made better today by listening to Sherlock Holmes. I switched it up and finished the “The Adventure of the Dancing Men” early on audio. I would have enjoyed seeing the drawings, but still an enjoyable story.

Has anyone attempted deciphering the code?

#Sherlocked #readalong #SerialReader #audiobook #BooksontheFarm

JazzFeathers I trusted Mr Conan Doyle. I understand the concept, but l don't think my mind would actually act on it 😆 6y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Yeah, I don‘t think I would have actually tried either, except to maybe go back after the answer is revealed to look at it closer. 🤔🤣 6y
CoffeeNBooks This was my favorite story so far! I didn't try to decipher the code, but I thought it was really cool. 6y
Daisey @CoffeeNBooks I think I would have enjoyed this one a bit more if I had seen the code throughout the story. 6y
CSeydel Yeah I was disappointed that Serial Reader couldn‘t show the code. I went and looked them up. 6y
