Confessions of a Domestic Failure (Original)
Confessions of a Domestic Failure (Original) | Bunmi Laditan
From the creator of The Honest Toddler comes the instant bestseller that's a must-read for moms everywhereThere are good moms and bad moms--and then there are hot-mess moms. Introducing Ashley Keller, career girl turned stay-at-home mom who's trying to navigate the world of Pinterest-perfect, Facebook-fantastic and Instagram-impressive mommies but failing miserably. When Ashley gets the opportunity to participate in the "Motherhood Better" boot camp run by the mommy-blog-empire maven she idolizes, she jumps at the chance to become the perfect mom she's always wanted to be. But will she fly high or flop? With her razor-sharp wit and knack for finding the funny in everything, Bunmi Laditan creates a character as flawed and lovable as Bridget Jones or Becky Bloomwood while hilariously lambasting the societal pressures placed upon every new mother. At its heart, Ashley's story reminds moms that there's no way to be perfect, but many ways to be great.

Disclaimer: not a mom nor a pre-established fan of Bunmi Laditan. I saw this book on the shelf at the library so I grabbed it.
With that said, I thought the book had some funny moments. Some parts seemed a tad unrealistic, but I guess that‘s the point of fiction books. Would I read it again? No. Was it an easy, entertaining airport read? Yup! Overall, 3/5

Not my normal genre, but a good friend recommended it and I loved it so much! I don‘t understand the negative reviews, I identified with so much (minus the $8k furniture buy and mom vacation in Napa Valley). All moms should read this!

Waste of time. Whiny, incompetent mom complains about how unsuccessful she is at parenting. Not funny, predictable, and irritating. #LitsyAtoZ challenge @BookishMarginalia I had to read it for book club. The bonus is that this reminds me that book clubs are so great for getting to read things I would not chose my own.

Book club choice-so I have to finish but ugh. This same blah, whiny story about a new mom is boring, not funny and tries way too hard. The attempt at snark and sarcasm as well as the complaining about not being domestic makes me want to scream. I can guess how it‘s going to go and I will be mad if I‘m right. Don‘t waste your time. I haven‘t laughed even once and it‘s been reviewed as hilarious. Wrong.#litsyAtoz challenge @BookishMarginalia

This should have been so much funnier. As the main character is supposed to have been a competent business person, I would have hoped she'd be generally smarter and less shallow than she was written. Most of the supporting characters are shallow and nasty.

The very end *might* redeem the story the tiniest bit. Overall, I thought the book was a painful slog. This is why I need more than 7 hold slots in Overdrive!! I need better books available.

bookaholic1 I felt the same way, won it off Goodreads, and so glad I didn't buy it 6y

Moms often try to be #AlltoAll, taking care of everyone and everything else. And I know I'm not alone, such an attempt generally (well, always) ends up failing. I love Bunmi Laditan's online writings for her honesty about motherhood, and for making me feel less isolated on this crazy ride. Her book is still on my TBR, but I'm moving up the OverDrive holds list!

This would have been annoying if it wasn‘t a “light audiobook for the car” pick. I enjoy some Bridget Jones-like stupidity in these kinds of books but they always go too far. I will say I kept thinking “Stop bitching about the messy house while watching reality TV. Just clean!!” Then I would binge watch Grace and Frankie wishing the dishes were washed. Some things might be universal.

I thought I was beyond the angst of this type of novel, but my #TBR for #24in48 was wrecked & this was available for checkout & I had to break in my duck shoes & what better way than while mowing the mustard, but be quick as kids & ex require solutions & whoops! will you looky there? I zeroed out my timer, so it seems as though I only logged 3 hours but it‘s really more like 16 & so it is clear that this is still my kind of book. Totally relate.

KathyWheeler I‘m so far from the characters in this this that it‘s ridiculous; I still liked it though. It was a fun read. 6y

I love Bunmi's writing, the book has plenty of witty, funny moments, but the main character is so hard to like- or even sympathize with. The amount of work she puts towards pretending she is someone she is not to impress some unknown mom's on an online group just made me think would be time better spent accepting her messy, but down to earth life style.
It's still a fun read, but I had expected better.

I wanted to love this. Bunmi is one of my favorite people. She is unflinchingly honest and funny and smart. The character in this book, however, is not. She is hard to like. There are parts that I related to because hell, being a mom is hard and thankless and really shitty sometimes. But Ashley felt joyless and superficial and fake and mean and petty for 80% of the book. She redeems herself a bit toward the end, but it was too little, too late.

I did not like this book.
I felt nothing for Ashley but annoyance.
She fakes and lies her way through the story because she's struggling with adapting to life as a stay at home mum.
In the end everything works out o.k. without her ever facing or dealing with her emotions or reasons why she acts the way she does. 🙄
One dimensional characters, sadly not a book for me.

When I was reading this book all I could think about was how I could see it being made into a movie and how the main character would be played by Amy Schumer. It‘s a fluffy novel about the struggles of being a new mom. The main character was often annoying and hard to sympathize with, but still entertaining in my opinion. She was sometimes relatable too...especially her body image struggle and the challenges of being a SAHM.

At the beginning I was very annoyed by Ashley and felt she was so over the top terrible at being a mom. I really almost gave up on reading it. But, about half way through she finally starts to realize that's she not as bad as she thinks she is. By the end, I found myself cheering for her and even cried along with her.

"To gluten!" ??

This was a really fun read! Laditan - of Honest Toddler fame - imparts a satirical spin on mom life while simultaneously tackling some very real issues faced by new parents. As a SAHM myself, I found the main character Ashley particularly relatable and I loved her dearly. I enjoyed the heck out of the audio. The narration was perfect!

I like this book so far - it's really funny BUT I am getting a little annoyed with the main character. I'm a mom and no stranger to the mom guilt & wondering if I'm doing what's best for my kid. Ashley takes this a little far by doing everything someone else says she should be doing. And she is constantly getting caught in a lie or scheme (though sometimes unwittingly)

I suspect this is full of motherhood cliches, but I'm not sure it matters if it helps new moms feel less alone. My non-mom self also had fun with it, due in large part to the great audio performance and the reality show feel.

Laditan tries to make Ashley the Everymom, too. There are no physical descriptions of her or her family and minimal setting cues. Alas, the latter do put this in Nowheresville, USA. I hate it when Canadian writers do that.

I love this book. Ashley is a new mom and is having trouble adjusting. Sleeping, cleaning, cooking, showering, showing her husband attn. Any Mom can relate to this book and what Ashley is going thru. She follows a Super Mom blogger and tries to live up to these high expectations. I've known someone like this - they can do everything and do it well. She joins the better mom bootcamp which puts her in funny situations. This is a LOL book!

This book was amusing -- I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. I was once a young stay-at-home mother, but that was long before the days of mommy blogging and social media, so I had a difficult time relating to how Ashley was effected by all that. The narrator read the book with a frenetic pace, and it suited the story well.
