From Dust to Stardust | Kathleen Rooney

Pickpick

A slow meander through a fictional look at the start of Hollywood, with a sprinkling of nostalgia for the silent film industry. Doreen O‘Dare is the fictionalized portrayal of Colleen Moore, a silent film actress and the creator of the Fairy Castle. Reading this book makes me want to watch silent films! A good choice for #SundayBuddyRead .

Mehso-so

This felt like a summary of a lot of books I've previously read.
There's a lot of useful information in bite size chunks you can use as needed for different areas of personal growth. But it doesn't do a deep dive into any one area. So if you know what you'd like to grow in I'd suggest finding a book that goes more in-depth.

The Valley of Fear | Arthur Conan Doyle

Mehso-so

I enjoyed the first half of this short novel; the second half was not so much. I previously struggled the last time with Conan Doyle‘s telling of past events in America, and this one left me feeling similarly. I guess I‘m all about Holmes‘s deductions and not reading about the lawless American West through the eyes of Conan Doyle!

So-so for me, but this checks off #LetterV #LitsyAToZ and #InThePublicDomain #52BookClub25 ! #NoPlaceLikeHolmes

dabbe Even though the 2nd half was also a detective story with a Pinkerton detective, he wasn't Sherlock, was he? Can't wait for our discussion! 🤩 1d

A very soft pick for me. Henry has taken the romans tropes and played around with them a bit, but ultimately, it‘s still an enemies-to-lovers story. It‘s well-written, with character development, but apparently I only enjoy romances in December. And I‘m also a bit of a prude ‘cos I don‘t like the spicy bits!

3½ ✨
This was a very quick read. A bit young, and the characters lack emotional depth. But the story did grab me.
I'm definitely reading the rest of the series.

I think I bought this because of the cover; I definitely started reading it because of a Goodreads challenge, and realised it‘s not a genre I normally read. I wasn‘t sure I‘d like it, but I‘m pleased to say I loved it. Lots of “wait, what, so he…? And she….?”!

Beautiful writing, without any sensationalism or exaggeration, telling what it was like to live through 1943 & 44 in Italy, first far enough from the fighting to be considered a safe place to evacuate children, then literally the front lines. Fleeing at a moments notice, on foot, with 4 infants, 23 children under 10, and various adults. Dealing with partisans, fascists and Germans, all armed, all wanting to take whatever food, clothes etc.

Lcsmcat And thought it all she works on saving lives, while the fate of her extended family is unknown. Highly recommended. #letterW #litsyatoz @Texreader 5d

These books always feel like coming home.
I've always loved books with doors and quests. And McGuire gives me a place to go each year that fills the door-shape hole in me that needs filling.
Somehow I've missed this one last year, so I have two doors to go through this year.
I love how each book continues on the previous books, but always have their own adventures in new unknowns.

A collection of short stories. Each story centered around a character's passion - friendship, lust, a mother's love - and multiply the passion tenfold in the larger context. I was highly engaged and couldn't wait to start the next story. #FoodandLit #LitsyAtoZ@Texreader @Catsandbooks
