We Used to Live Here
We Used to Live Here | Marcus Kliewer
The Turn of the Key meets Parasite in this eerily haunting debut and Reddit hit--soon to be a Netflix original movie starring Blake Lively--about two homeowners whose lives are turned upside down when the house's previous residents unexpectedly visit. As a young, queer couple who flip houses, Charlie and Eve can't believe the killer deal they've just gotten on an old house in a picturesque neighborhood. As they're working in the house one day, there's a knock on the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in. As soon as the strangers enter their home, uncanny and inexplicable things start happening, including the family's youngest child going missing and a ghostly presence materializing in the basement. Even more weird, the family can't seem to take the hint that their visit should be over. And when Charlie suddenly vanishes, Eve slowly loses her grip on reality. Something is terribly wrong with the house and with the visiting family--or is Eve just imagining things?

So… this started out so well, the tension and suspense were there, but near the halfway point it quickly spiraled out of control. By the end, I had more questions than answers and was left unsatisfied and annoyed.

A lot of things were there for the “fear factor” but had no meaning to the plot. I don‘t get scared by books, so maybe that‘s why I was so annoyed. If it‘s in the book, it needs to have something to do with the plot.⬇️

Charityann Disappointed, because I really wanted to like this one… #wintergames #christmaschapterchasers @staycurious 3w

Eve (MC) and Charlie buy a house to flip - Thomas, who used to live there, stops by with his family to show his kids where he grew up. Everything changes after that. Is this what a descent into madness looks like, or are there really alternate universes? I was scared, tense and captivated the entire read. I loved how the story unfolded and ended. Overall, a very good thriller!

JudeCC I‘m reading this one but haven‘t caught me yet. Idk why!? So far I don‘t like it. I‘m at the part where they find him outside. Does it gets better? Rational and not just jumping all around and makes no sense? 3w
bthegood @JudeCC it doesn't get better in terms of making sense - I believe the writing is done this way to get the reader to feel a sense of “am I crazy/what is happening here“ as the MC does. 😜 3w

November got away from me - I got bogged down with a couple of books I couldn't get invested in right now. I put those back on the shelf and went back to some series that I enjoy.

This book was wackadoodle!! I went into it pretty blind and I definitely recommend that. Then you can just sit back and hold on for the crazy ride 🤣. I honestly don‘t even know if I fully understand what I listened to but I definitely enjoyed it. Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Not necessarily my usual fare, but when looking through the new books at work I paged through it and ended up pretty much devouring it. Pretty trippy and fitting that it started on Reddit, as it will (has) spawn(ed) countless Internet threads. Fun, but I'm not trying to make sense of it!

A couple buys a creepy old house with a seemingly eternal basement and lots of unanswered questions about its past. A family shows up unannounced on the doorstep and a snowstorm keeps them around. It‘s an eerie psychological thriller that drags its feet a bit too much. Not quite my thing. But if you like a dread-inducing, twisty, creepy book, you‘ll probably enjoy it.

Loved the first half. Second half got a bit messy, and I'm not entirely sure I get what was going on, but was still creepy Halloween fun. A good read to finish off October.

I think this was Kliewer's debut? I'd definitely be interested to see what he does next.

October wasn‘t the strongest month of reading. My favorite was tagged, such a weird twisty thriller. Best to go into this one knowing nothing.

Loved it! The building dread and anxiety and bleakness had me hooked. The idea of everyone around you telling you you‘re someone else, that you never existed, is horrifying. Can‘t wait for a sequel!

A good start to October. A simple start, solid suspenseful build up, and a knockout ending. The ending was a bit unsatisfying and a lot unsettling. Recommended for a suspenseful light and creepy mystery.

A bizarre and creepy tale that has many twists and turns. I thought this was going to be about some kind of home invasion, but it was so much more than that.

4.75⭐
-psychological horror that seriously messes with your head
-with a ghostly suspense
-and a creepy crawlies aspect
-a cleverly crafted plot that skews reality
-although it was a touch confusing at times
-a somewhat ambiguous ending
-Bonus: there‘s a movie coming soon
-Jeremy Carlisle Parker as the MC was sensational. Corey Brill who reads the epistolary sections of the book was also excellent.

This book was a slow burn creep. Unsettling. Enough to make you uncomfortable but not scare the daylights out of you. I‘m still thinking about the ending and if I truly understand it. Very twisty. This would be a great first book for someone just entering the creepy genre.

This was a wild ride! I‘ve never been so satisfied with a book while still having so many questions. But I guess that‘s the point. Nothing was wrapped up in a little bow and I loved it. Just enough was given to make you continue wondering.

I already turned this book in so I don't have a picture with the dust jacket. However, it has an otherworldliness that is similar to Twin Peaks.

This is a real-life picture of me trying to find out what the hell was going on in this book 😂. I absolutely loved it until the ending. I was creeped out to the point of looking behind me when I was going upstairs. I was completely wrapped and trying to solve everything. What.Was.That.Ending. Nothing is wrapped up. Nothing is solved. There are so many un answered questions, and I still have no idea what just happened. (Translate everything)3.75/5

Truly uncanny debut. The creepy factor is off the charts. There are also excerpts of found footage throughout the book. There are sections that start off with tense dread leading to terror. If you like books that blur the edges of reality, give it a try. 4.5 stars

Super interesting concept for a scary story but I have to say it was poorly executed. When I finished, I thought “What even is this book?” Unfortunately, the storyline was not laid out in a way that made my jaw drop with amazement, and in fact I am not really sure what happened, in a bad way.
Plus, the author used ellipses to transition between paragraphs when something creepy was going on. I definitely used to do that. In middle school.

I saw loads of love for this one everywhere particularly on bookstagram. Haunted house stories being my fave I jumped on the bandwagon. Sadly, this one fell flat for me. Don‘t want to say too much as I don‘t want to give any spoilers for others but the story veered off from a haunted house story into a genre that is one of my least liked & I try to avoid. The writing was good, the story just wasn‘t for me.

Bec_lectic I hear ya! I liked it but if it goes into a genre you don‘t like there‘s no saving it. 4mo

Wow, what a wild story! One day a strange family shows up on Eves porch claiming they used to live in her recently purchased house. Harmlessly they ask if they can just look around. What‘s the harm in that Eve thinks and reluctantly lets them in. This book is creepy, mind bending and definitely unlike anything I‘ve read. Still thinking of the ending but don‘t want to reveal too much to spoil the story. Definitely recommend!!

At the heart of this book is the relationship between home and its people, and the message of the lasting connection between them. Kliewer tells this story with the quiet urgency that a small town runs on, and asks the listener to consider time and remembrance.....
