The Turn of the Key meets Parasite in this eerily haunting debut and Reddit hit--soon to be a Netflix original movie starring Blake Lively--about two homeowners whose lives are turned upside down when the house's previous residents unexpectedly visit. As a young, queer couple who flip houses, Charlie and Eve can't believe the killer deal they've just gotten on an old house in a picturesque neighborhood. As they're working in the house one day, there's a knock on the door. A man stands there with his family, claiming to have lived there years before and asking if it would be alright if he showed his kids around. People pleaser to a fault, Eve lets them in. As soon as the strangers enter their home, uncanny and inexplicable things start happening, including the family's youngest child going missing and a ghostly presence materializing in the basement. Even more weird, the family can't seem to take the hint that their visit should be over. And when Charlie suddenly vanishes, Eve slowly loses her grip on reality. Something is terribly wrong with the house and with the visiting family--or is Eve just imagining things?

I liked the first half better than the last half. A woman alone in a isolated house she and her girlfriend are renovating gets unexpected company when a family of five shows up on her doorstep, the father claiming he used to live there and asking if he can show his wife and kids around. Started its life on CreepyPasta and thus it felt disjointed to me. A soft pick.

This is hands-down the most terrifying book I‘ve read in the past couple of years. It really got into my head and there are some scenes in here that I will probably never forget. But I loved reading it. I inhaled it! I *cannot wait* for his next book to drop in Spring 2026.

If you‘re a fan of theories and hidden clues and researching more about a book, this one is for you!!

Also, it‘ll be perfect for some of y‘all‘s spooky-season reading.

CSeydel I just started this book and I‘m tempted to flip though and decode all the Morse code messages … should I make myself wait? Is it a spoiler? 3w

Young couple Charlie and Eve can‘t believe the killer deal they got on an old house deep in the mountains.

One day, a man knocks on the door. He says he lived there years before and asks if he can show his family around.

But, as soon as they enter, strange things start to happen. Eve is desperate for them to leave and never come back. But they can‘t – or won‘t –

Then, Charlie vanishes, and Eve begins to lose her grip on reality

Quick paced and horrificly engaging.

Kliewer did an explanational job creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. Adding a somewhat damaged, but totally loveable narrator made this unputdownable.

The audiobook performance was outstanding as well, it definitely added a lot to the experience.

Creepy - yes, suspenseful - yes, propulsive - yes. The ending let me down. It leaves a lot open to interpretation.

Wow! - what a claustrophobic, crazy, mind-f*** of a book. For a person with anxiety - it was such a stressful read, but in a good way. I really didn't want to put it down - even though I'm reading 6 other books.

I‘m not really sure how to explain this one. Haunted house? Ghosts? Alternate reality? It‘s definitely creepy, and frustrating as you‘re rooting for Eve, the narrator. The end leaves things pretty opened ended with a WTF did I just read feeling. Overall, it was a good realty escape.

This was such an engrossing book. Yes, it did have some of the cliched horror tropes, but overall it was so unique and exciting. I felt my skin crawl as I listened with bated breath, to see how things pan out. Definitely a must listen. It is low on the horror side - with the horror elements coming up only in the final section of the book. For the largest chunk, the author gaslights the reader, by making his characters intriguing and unreliable.

Reddit is one place that spawns compelling authors. Kilewers‘ debut novel is no exception. The dimensions of one‘s own mind and fear of being ‘erased‘. The obsession we have with old homes/places. Impossible space like House of Leaves. And brilliant composition. Glad I picked this book up-I couldn‘t put it down!

So… this started out so well, the tension and suspense were there, but near the halfway point it quickly spiraled out of control. By the end, I had more questions than answers and was left unsatisfied and annoyed.

A lot of things were there for the “fear factor” but had no meaning to the plot. I don‘t get scared by books, so maybe that‘s why I was so annoyed. If it‘s in the book, it needs to have something to do with the plot.⬇️

Charityann Disappointed, because I really wanted to like this one… #wintergames #christmaschapterchasers @staycurious 11mo

Not necessarily my usual fare, but when looking through the new books at work I paged through it and ended up pretty much devouring it. Pretty trippy and fitting that it started on Reddit, as it will (has) spawn(ed) countless Internet threads. Fun, but I'm not trying to make sense of it!

A couple buys a creepy old house with a seemingly eternal basement and lots of unanswered questions about its past. A family shows up unannounced on the doorstep and a snowstorm keeps them around. It‘s an eerie psychological thriller that drags its feet a bit too much. Not quite my thing. But if you like a dread-inducing, twisty, creepy book, you‘ll probably enjoy it.

Loved the first half. Second half got a bit messy, and I'm not entirely sure I get what was going on, but was still creepy Halloween fun. A good read to finish off October.

I think this was Kliewer's debut? I'd definitely be interested to see what he does next.

4.75⭐
-psychological horror that seriously messes with your head
-with a ghostly suspense
-and a creepy crawlies aspect
-a cleverly crafted plot that skews reality
-although it was a touch confusing at times
-a somewhat ambiguous ending
-Bonus: there‘s a movie coming soon
-Jeremy Carlisle Parker as the MC was sensational. Corey Brill who reads the epistolary sections of the book was also excellent.

This book was a slow burn creep. Unsettling. Enough to make you uncomfortable but not scare the daylights out of you. I‘m still thinking about the ending and if I truly understand it. Very twisty. This would be a great first book for someone just entering the creepy genre.

This was a wild ride! I‘ve never been so satisfied with a book while still having so many questions. But I guess that‘s the point. Nothing was wrapped up in a little bow and I loved it. Just enough was given to make you continue wondering.

This is a real-life picture of me trying to find out what the hell was going on in this book 😂. I absolutely loved it until the ending. I was creeped out to the point of looking behind me when I was going upstairs. I was completely wrapped and trying to solve everything. What.Was.That.Ending. Nothing is wrapped up. Nothing is solved. There are so many un answered questions, and I still have no idea what just happened. (Translate everything)3.75/5
