I Owe You One | Sophie Kinsella
The irresistible new standalone from Sophie Kinsella is a story of love, empowerment and an IOU that changes everything . . . Fixie Farr cant help herself. Straightening a crooked object, removing a barely-there stain, helping out a friend . . . she just has to put things right. Its how she got her nickname, after all. So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, Fixie not only agrees, she ends up saving it from certain disaster. To thank her, the computers owner, Sebastian, scribbles her an IOU but of course Fixie never intends to call in the favour. That is, until her teenage crush, Ryan, comes back into her life and needs her help and Fixie turns to Seb. But things dont go according to plan, and now Fixie owes Seb: big time. Soon the pair are caught up in a series of IOUs from small favours to life-changing debts and Fixie is torn between the past shes used to and the future she deserves. Does she have the courage to fix things for herself and fight for the life, and love, she really wants? ***** EVERYBODY LOVES SOPHIE KINSELLA: ***** 'Left me giddy with laughter. Fixie Farr is a sweetheart, who can't help herself from fixing things. One fine day, she helps a stranger by saving his laptop and important documents. Feeling he owes her a favour, he scribbles 'I owe you one' on a coffee sleeve. Through the exchange of IOUs, a relationship blossoms between Fixie and Seb. The story concludes on how she turns to focus on her life for once and fix it.

A cute story, with a simple plot giving us a breezy feel

Ciao a tutti!

Kinsella is a comfort author for me and I can count on her for a fun, light read. The heroine, Fixie (a nickname earned because she‘s always fixing everything), is pretty much a doormat, letting her siblings run over her and the family business. Fixie puts others first, tamping down her own frustrations and wishes, and while that can be annoying, she does find her footing and her voice, and comes into her own!

Sophie Kinsella's books are always a good light rom-com.
This is a story of Farr's family where the lead Fixie always tries to FIX everything with her family, the family shop and actually everything around her.
And Seb an investment manager who is still dealing with his brother's death.
Fixie saves Seb's life not once but twice and so Seb owes one to Fixie. This is how the story of the barter of being debted to each other starts.

Fixie Farr wants to fix everything- askew merchandise in the family store to people's emotional problems. When she saves a stranger's laptop in a freak coffee shop accident, they embark on a series of swapped favors.

Trouble is, Fixie's a bit of a pushover, especially when it comes to family, and enables terrible behavior as her family runs roughshod over the family business.

Tough to read her be a doormat and not sure I bought the happy ending

Finally finished listening to this one... Been listening to it since late March. I don't know why but my reading speed & listening to audio books have slowed down to an all time low since the beginning of the Corona virus pandemic.

Took me a while to get through this as I‘ve been busy this week and haven‘t done much reading for pleasure but it was very enjoyable and fast paced when I was reading it. Not my favourite Sophie Kinsella (because nothing beats the Shopaholic series) but a fun read nonetheless! 3.5🌟

I stayed up way too late last night finishing up the book. Fixie is a character you can‘t help but fall in love with, she just can‘t help but try to fix things. The only issue is that her family tends to walk over her in regards to all of it. I almost stopped reading it because the first part was just so aggravating but I‘m happy I continued on.

Sometimes she's excellent and sometimes she just crashes and burns. Sophie often writes like every scene has to be a huge awkward moment or some sort of triumph which creates no contrast in the writing. It makes reading this feel like you're crawling through mud. Loved her book "I've Got Your Number" but bailed on this after three hours of audio book.

The entire first half of this book made me anxious as everyone took advantage of our protagonist, who couldn't see the misuse for what it was. The second half was an enjoyable contemporary romance where she found her footing and her inner strength. 3.5⭐

I didn't like the nickname and her always putting others first while neglecting herself.. She let everyone walk all over her - it was too much... This girl was taken advantage of again and again...
But the book grew on me eventually and was an OK rom-com.

Sophie Kinsella does it again!!! I loved this book about Fixie, who got that nickname because she always wants to fix everything. She loves her family even though her brother is a total controlling, selfish, obnoxious, phony jerk and her sister is the epitome of our modern “self care”.....bs. She lacks confidence and buries her frustrations in order to keep the peace. She‘s lovable, sweet and funny. Great ending too.

2.75⭐️

I was going to dnf it but I keep seeing reviews that it gets so much better in the second half. This set up for a great story of Fixie learning to stand up for herself, fighting the stereotype of needing a man as the head of the house and so much more. That sounds great, but is maybe 1/5 of the book. The rest of it is Fixie being obsessed with fixing things and putting herself into uncomfortable situations over and over and over again.

Schnoebs @Birdsong28 I‘m using this for the 2019 prompt. I might as well get something out of it for how much I didn‘t like it lol #52booksin52weeks 5y

Sophie Kinsella is a definite guilty pleasure for me! The narrator of the audiobook was perfect and brought Fixie to life with all her befuddled charm and foibles. A quick and enjoyable listen with some great characters (and admittedly some awful ones) and lots of drama. And don‘t forget the happy ending of course! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I have loved the Shopaholic series in the past, so it pains me to be on the verge of bailing on this one. I am 128 pages in, the protagonist is a doormat, and the man she loves is a supreme egotist. Even Bindi looks bored, stretched out on the couch. I‘m setting it aside for now, but we‘ll see if I make that permanent or not.

akckitty Too many good books out there to be hung up on the bad ones! ;) 5y

It‘s the weekend! I took a couple days off and I intend to get through this one. Of course, I always intend to read more than I do. Then I get distracted 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘m seeing mixed reviews with this book, and it‘s been a minute since I‘ve picked up a Kinsella. Hoping I like it well enough.

⭐️⭐️ When I first became a reader in my early 20s, Kinsella was a favorite. It‘s funny how your tastes can change over time. I haven‘t enjoyed her books in a bit, so I haven‘t read anything since 2012‘s I‘ve Got Your Number. I wanted to give this a shot after seeing friends‘ positive reviews. I should‘ve skipped it. Super slow start, insufferable characters, frustrating situations. There‘s no reason it should‘ve taken 450 pages to tell this story.

Aswenson Good to know! I‘m much more at the age of Kristin Hannah books than Kinsella for an easy read. 😊 I‘ve enjoyed a couple of hers though! 6y
MallenNC This isn't my favorite of hers either. Of her recent ones, I think My (Not So) Perfect Life is the best. 6y
The_Real_Nani 450 pages!! That‘s nuts. Shoddy editing? 6y

Such a light, fun read. I hadn't read a Sophie Kinsella book in years, but was pleased to discover that I remain a fan. Her books are fun and beachy, but still well-written and internally consistent, which can be difficult to find. I also appreciate the character development of not only the main character, but also supporting characters. If you're looking for a fun escape (with the bonus of being set in England), this one's for you.
