Leviathan (Reprint)
Leviathan (Reprint) | Scott Westerfeld
It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure....One that will change both their lives forever.

🎧 The cover got me. I found myself trying to adjust to the story from the get-go,. I‘m not huge into WWII era steampunk. The story suddenly picks up, makes sense, explains much & takes off like a shot!

Enjoyed. I‘d read a second book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

mandarchy I read this trilogy when everyone was reading the Hunger Games (before the movies). And I thought this was much better. I had never read Steampunk or alternate history, but the unrequited love story in the Hunger Games ruined that trilogy and made this one better I just had to get used to Steampunk and Alternate History. 2y

This was a fantastical reimagining of WWI. In this #Steampunk version there are the Darwinists who have learned to create new hybrid animals that are part machine like the leviathan airship that is part whale/part zeppelin.
Prince Aleksander of the Austro-Hungarian throne is on the run. Deryn Sharp is a teenage girl pretending to be a boy so she could join the Britsh airforce. War is just starting to break out & already they are in trouble.

I came hesitantly, but from the first page action and adventure had me rolling along with the story. Battles between fabricated creatures and futuristic machinery were mind boggling. It was Star Wars in Europe at the beginning of WWI. And, did I mention that Churchill and Charles Darwin's granddaughter are foes? This #dieselpunk ROCKED!!!!! #BBRC @LibrarianRyan #SeriesRead2022 @TheSpineView

Butterfinger @LibrarianRyan diesel punk and steampunk are so similar. But the machinery was transportation so I thought it worked for this prompt. It could work for alternative history, steampunk, biopunk too. 3y

I found this to be an interesting world in which some countries go all in for steampunk and others go all in for genetic engineering. There‘s also a fair bit of alt-history WWI. I found Deryn and Alex to be engaging POV characters but my only quibble is that I feel like this ended very abruptly.

This book was a good alternative history. It‘s a steampunk-like alternate history of WWI told by the POV of heir to the throne of Austria and a soldier in the war, a girl posing as a boy. I don‘t usually like men writing women characters but despite a few missteps he did well. This was a quick read and interesting and I could see a YA reader loving it.

Absolutely loved this fun, steampunk book. The concept of machines versus fabricated animals was fantastic and very unique. It was a lot of fun and I think it was a great way to rework the telling of WWI. The characters were fun and so easy to like. Can't wait to read the next two books! And also, gorgeous illustrations!

What made this a 4 star book for me was the narration by Alan Cumming. He was an absolute delight to listen to. I enjoyed all the ideas thrown together in the Clanker-Darwinist machinery/beasties. It was fun to imagine the Leviathan, bats and all. But I felt that Deryn “Barking Spiders” seemed a lot younger than the 15 she is meant to be. She seemed more like 11, 12 at the most.
Overall, it was action-packed and exciting. A fun listen!

alanacristin I just scrolled through my Audiobook shelf on goodreads and was surprised to find i barely remembered reading several of the books. I've suspected listening instead of reading means I'm not fully connecting with books at times, and i think this confirms it. The ones that stuck with me are primarily those memoirs read by the author. And those i listened to in long chunks on road trips by myself 😄 i miss those days! 6y

The idea of a steampunk, alternative history of WW1 intrigued me to pick this last weekend at the library. The story is develops with the Central Powers, known as Clankers, using mechanical war machines, opposed the Allies, known as Darwinists, that fabricate genetic creatures. The concept was neat; but I would say that the story didn't fully grab me enough to pick it fully but i liked it more than a so-so. I would be willing to read the next one.

Meh. I liked it okay, but it never grabbed me, and I don't feel a pressing need to know what happens in the rest of the series. Also, slightly annoyed at Deryn's need to 'curse' 'adorably' every other line. Also, even more annoyed that, of course, she's falling for the other main character. Doesn't seem at all necessary.
I will say that Alan Cumming's reading was gorgeous, of course. I love him to bits.

I'm a moody reader, and I wasn't really in the mood for this, but I read it for book club.

I thought the illustrations were distracting, and as a librarian I think it's harder to sell it in the stacks with illustrations that make the characters seem younger than the story reads.

I also wanted to know more about how it was for a girl masquerading as a boy, but I don't care to hear it from a male. The book was entertaining, but overall meh.

Mimi28 I tried to read that series, but just couldn't get through it. Saw it at my library today like- wow- that very book was on my shelf sooo long, lol 8y
