In the Library of the Damned, hidden away amongst that vast depository of ancient wisdom, there exists a certain bookcase where the most decadent, the most blasphemous of tomes sit upon a dusty shelf. And amongst those titles - that should never be named - there is one volume that is the most terrible, the most hideous of them all. That book is the Lexicon of Fear. But, long ago, some of its pages were ripped from the binding and spirited away by a lowly student of the ancient science of Horrorology, who was determined the secrets contained therein would one day be shared with the world. And now that day has come. These are the words thatcomprise the very language of horror itself, and the tales they tell are notfor the fainthearted. But be warned: once you have read them, there is noturning back. Soon, you too will know the true meanings of fear . . . Featuring stories from Clive Barker, Robert Shearman, Michael Marshall Smith, Pat Cadigan, Mark Samuels, Joanne Harris, Muriel Gray, Kim Newman, Ramsey Campbell, Reggie Oliver, Angela Slatter and Lisa Tuttle.

You're package has arrived @Carla 🎃 I'm so excited! I'm kinda nervous I didn't do enough for you though now 😲 #ScreamathonSwap my anxiety and paranoia will always get to me lol I will never feel like I've done enough

Carla I‘m sure you did, sweetie. Some of yours is gently used books from my shelf. Due to my pain and hyperextension issues in my hands, I really can‘t read “brick“ paperbacks anymore, and I am so gentle with my books that they are in quite good condition—so this was the perfect opportunity to send them to a loving home! So your package is new goodies plus lots of those. :) #spoileralert 😘 5y
fandom_hellspawn99 Oh I have such a soft spot for those kinds of books, I've always been a fan of old paperbacks. It gives me a sense of nostalgia 😊 for some reason it's nice to have books obviously owned by multiple people, I know this will sound crazy but it's like you can kind of sense that energy and vibe from them @Carla 5y
Carla @fandom_hellspawn99 yay! That makes me very happy. Good, I think you will be very pleased, then. ♥️📚 5y

JackOBotts “It” is probably one of my top (though I haven‘t read a lot of King.) A more recent read - and especially terrifying because it‘s nonfiction: (edited) 5y
madamereadsalot1 The Deep by Nick Cutter was creepy and gross. Misery by Stephen King was the most stressful, anxiety causing book I've ever read. Both of them have things I'm actually phobic over, so that's probably why the got under my skin so much. 5y
sprainedbrain Ooooh I can‘t wait to see all of the answers! Mine are Pet Sematary by Stephen King and most recently, this one: 5y
See All 10 Comments
Mandigolightly @sprainedbrain penpal terrified me. We had a raccoon in the crawl space while I was reading it and I made someone go down there and making sure nobody was living down there living on tuna 5y
BookwormAHN Darkfall creeped me out for quite a while 5y
sprainedbrain @Mandigolightly omg that would have put me over the edge. 😱 5y
Reggie The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. This book made me feel horrible after reading it. I felt I was complicit in a tortuous murder just by having read it. I can‘t recommend it. He‘s a great writer though. 5y
JaclynW Lord of the Flies because it broke humans down to survival mode where it shows how easily/ not far off we are from being animals. Creepy! 5y
eri.reads This one definitely is on my reread list even though it was pretty creepy and made me hear sounds every time I read it after dark. 5y

Hello people of #lmpbc Group S! So excited to start reading some horror with all of you. Here are some ideas I‘m kicking around. I‘ve read HEX before, but loved it would totally read again. Anything catching your eye or anything you want to avoid? Note: my copies of CUJO and THE EXORCIST are mass market paperbacks if it matters. Link and TW in comments!

Hestapleton TW: body horror and animal violence 6y
Hestapleton TW: animal violence and possible child violence? 6y
jb72 Any of those sound fine to me (I‘ve not read any of them). I have been wanting to read 6y

Hestapleton TW Body horror—loosely based on real-life killer Albert Fish 6y
Hestapleton TW: cannibals 6y
Hestapleton TW: possession and body horror 6y
Hestapleton @jb72 awesome! 👍🏼👍🏼 6y
Kaylamburson I haven't read any of these! I would say my preference would be Brother, Alienist (although will I ever be able to walk out of my NYC apartment again?! Haha), or The Exorcist. 6y
Kaylamburson Although looks like The Alienist is almost 500 pages 😮 6y
Hestapleton @Kaylamburson SWEET BABY JESUS IT DOESNT LOOK THAT THICK. We can definitely shelve that one away for length issues lol 6y
Kaylamburson Bahaha, I'm just basing that on what Goodreads says, but it could be wrong! 6y
Hestapleton @Kaylamburson yeah I checked my copy and it‘s just around 500. Thin pages. 😬 (edited) 6y
Sleepswithbooks I read “The Exorcist “ but none of the others. All look great!! Bloody fun!!! 6y
Hestapleton @Kaylamburson @jb72 @Stacypatrice I‘m leaning towards BROTHER since it seems like we all haven‘t read it and it fits lengthwise. Any objections? 6y

Littens, I love horror novels but I just cannot find one that actually scares me! Could you guys suggest the scariest books you‘ve ever read? And does this happen to anyone else or am I just unshakable? 😂

wellreadredhead @RavenLovelyReads That one sounds so good! Definitely stacking it! 6y
TheWordJar Yikes @RavenLovelyReads! I‘m stacking that one too!! The last one I read that really got to me was the tagged book. It‘s kind of low-key tense the whole way through, insidiously building up dread. By the end it just got in my head and really freaked me out. 6y
See All 22 Comments
wellreadredhead @TheWordJar Yes! I loved Penpal a lot! 6y
RavenLovelyReads @TheWordJar I have penpal- maybe I‘ll move it up on my TBR- if you guys read my suggestion- let me know what you think! 6y
toofondofbooks I read a lot of spooky scary stuff. Have you read The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire ... I wouldn't say it scared me but it's very different and interesting. Also you can never go wrong with Ghost Story by Peter Straub 6y
JoScho Oh I am with you here. I‘m going to follow this thread. I have heard this trilogy is scary but haven‘t read it yet. 6y
wellreadredhead @toofondofbooks The McGuire series is one I own and haven‘t gotten to yet! I‘ll move that one up the list. I‘ll also be stacking Ghost story. Thanks!! 6y
wellreadredhead @JoScho I‘ll be stacking that one! Thank you! 6y
Karkar Oh I like this thread. I have a hard time finding things that scare me. The first time I read Salem‘s Lot it scared the boogers out of me, but not so much now. I third Penpal. It put me on edge 6y
dragondrool Penpal had a creepy vibe, but didn't scare me. The only book that I remember being really unsettled by is a non-fiction one called Night Stalks the Mansion by Constance Westbie. I was only about nine when I read it, though. 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I was genuinely unsettled by some of the stories in 6y
LauraJ Haven‘t ever had to put a book in a freezer, but The Troop gave me creepy dreams. 6y
ohyeahthatgirl There are usually a few gems in Ellen Datlow's Best Horror of the Year collections. Also, The Haunting of Hill House surprised me when I read it. 6y
BookwormAHN Sick House by Jeff Strand and Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt were both quite disturbing. 6y
wellreadredhead @ohyeahthatgirl I have Vol 10 from this year that I haven‘t gotten to yet! 6y
wellreadredhead @BookwormAHN I loved Hex! Other one stacked! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im in the same boat - happy to find some recommendations! Ive heard The Troop is realy good 👍 6y
Billypar I don't read too many but have the same problem when I do. But I've been slowly working my way through this story collection since Halloween and am really liking it. 6y
Birdsong28 I'm not a lover of horror in any form but this was really good 6y

Happy October Littens! What is your favourite horror/scary book to read for Halloween?! Looking for recommendations... 😱

Megara I‘m super partial to the horror classics! Dracula, grotesque writings by Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft writings (read with a barrel of salt), The Lottery by Shirley Jackson... but if you want some bad horror for the sake of laughs, I also recommend The Birthing House. 😂 6y
Megara Not a book— but I highly recommend the TV series Penny Dreadful. Bonus: it makes a ton of references to different classic horror stories! 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Megara I just bought a collection of H.P. Lovecraft, so I'm glad you recommended it... And I loved Penny Dreadful!!! (Except the last season, it felt rushed. Like they knew they were being cancelled but had to tie it all up. 🤷‍♀️ Still good though.) 6y
See All 18 Comments
Megara @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I could see why you‘d say that about PD! ...The “barrel of salt” warning for Lovecraft is because of his overt racism. His ability to craft characters that are questionably reliable is great though. 6y
madamereadsalot1 I will always and forever suggest The Woman in Black for a spooky gothic ghost story, Misery for a stressful head trip, and NOS4A2 for an eerie gripping adventure! 6y
Chrissyreadit I‘m reading The Haunting Of Hill House now. Bird Box is on my TBR. I think Rosemarys Baby would be good, The Witching Hour, or Salem‘s Lot. Goodreads has a list that looks great- I‘ve read about 1/3 and the rest are tbr‘s for me. 6y
Birdsong28 Not a real lover of horror either reading or film so when I read this I really enjoyed it. It is really good and just make sure you don't read it on your own 👻🎃📚📖 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @madamereadsalot1 who is the author for The Woman in Black? There are a few listed in the Litsy database. 6y
LA_Mead I really liked this book: 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Chrissyreadit I'm reading Bird Box right now! So far so good. I'll have to check out the Goodreads list. Thanks!! 👻 6y
ElisabethRose I personally love Frankenstein! 6y
Suzze Bird Box was excellent. The Shining freaked me out. 6y
Anitareads Thank you for posting this! I was also looking for some scary recommendations, so this answers came right on time ☺ I'm not big on horror stories, my friend recommended me these two books: Anna Dressed In Blood; Into the drowning deep by Mia Grant (I'm not really sure they fall into horror genre, but she described them as 'creepy'). 6y
Joy0201 I love the Adriana Mather books. How to Hang a Witch and Haunting the Deep. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly My go-to scary book recommendation is 6y

Horror, a genre looked down upon by many, while refusing to treat it as a 'Real' Literature.
I Have Crossed Path with many such people, who scoffs whenever I suggest them books about the Supernatural.

But as I can see, There are a Lot Of Horror Fanatics in Litsy!!! And I am glad I Found People, whose life revolves around Poe, Lovecraft, Stoker & King to name a few.

Well Just Asking, Who is Your Favourite Horror Writer???😱

AmyG King but Josh Malerman (is he considered a horror writer?) is becoming a favorite. Loved Bird Box. (edited) 7y
Tiyas7 @AmyG He can be considered I guess as he deals a lot with Psychological/Post Apocalyptic Horror and stuff 7y
Kaye I don‘t read many of this type books ( not because I don‘t like them), but because I can‘t find ones I like. I know they are popular, but some tend to remind me of romances, in the way they all have the same framework for their story , but just change the names. I‘ve read some of King‘s and liked them Josh Malerman ( Bird Box ) was stunningly impressive. I‘d like to find more like THAT. Any ideas ??? (edited) 7y
See All 43 Comments
Tiyas7 @Kaye I Know Mordern horrors are often marred by Clichés and stereotypes, that's a sad truth 7y
DieAReader I haven‘t read a lot of Horror per say aside from a King stint in High School. I do have more of his as well as some Poe & some Lovecraft in my TBR. Maybe I‘ll wait for October? Who knows. 7y
Bookwomble If you like Lovecraft them you might consider the horror stories of his contemporary and epistolary friend, Robert E. Howard. "Pigeons from Hell" is a very creepy Southern Gothic story featuring his creation the "zuvembie". When the Comics Code clamped down on horror comics and banned zombies from Code-compliant comics, Marvel adopted the name of Howard's creature instead. 7y
Tiyas7 @Bookwomble Thanks!!! I'll check it out 7y
Tiyas7 @Kaye Clive Barker 's books are great too. And if you want to know from where all these tropes (known now as Clichés😂) actually originated, then go for the classics!!! 7y
quirkyreader If you ever see my gr account you know I am all things horror. As of right now I have a Susan Hill book of short stories looking at me screaming "Read me"! 7y
Tiyas7 @quirkyreader ? That Was Kind Of Alice in Wonderland..."Read Me!!" 7y
Kaye Good point. Classics. The original good books. There‘s a guy who works at the bookstore I go to that gave me the complete background of Lovecraft‘s life, beginning to end. He must really love those stories. 7y
TrishB King and Barker 👍🏻 7y
tammysue Stephen King is where my love of horror came from, sooo many amazing authors I enjoy. And I loved Bird Box! 7y
RohitSawant Gosh, off the top of my head, King, Poe, Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Robert W Chambers, Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, Paul Tremblay, Ania Ahlborn, Josh Malerman, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Adam G Nevill, Kelly Link, Cassandra Khaw, Sarah Pinborough, Victor LaValle, Stephen Graham Jones.. I could go on 😆 7y
ladym30 Dean Koontz 7y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant please go on....😂😆 7y
Tiyas7 @Kaye He sure is a true horror fan😂 Can't blame him though for being such a big fan of HP Lovecraft 7y
Tiyas7 @ladym30 That's a great choic3😁 7y
Kaye @rohit-sawant Is horror mainly what you read ? You sure named off a lot 😲 (edited) 7y
AmyG @rohit-sawant Thanks for that list. 7y
Tiyas7 @AmyG He Actually Helped us a lot Unknowingly 😃 7y
AmyG Right??? Lucky us. ;) 7y
Tiyas7 @AmyG Damn True!!😂 7y
RohitSawant @Kaye Not really. I do have a soft spot for horror fiction, and it's mainly what I write, however, so part of delving into it deeply is educating myself about the genre along with enjoying the stories, but I love reading across genres and try to make my TBR as varied as I can! 7y
RohitSawant @AmyG My pleasure! :) 7y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant You Write Stories?? Where Can I Read Them?? 7y
Weaponxgirl I love a good horror but find it hard to find something I like, how I am with the genre in movies too. I love the likes of Poe, Shirley Jackson, Susan hill and adored dark matter by Michelle paver. Also really like the tagged book recently. 7y
Tiyas7 @Weaponxgirl Yes, sometimes It's real hard to find 'the' Horror that checks all the boxes! 7y
RohitSawant @Tiyas7 Appreciate your interest in my work! I've been fortunate enough to have some of my short stories published in anthologies & magazines. You can drop by the link in my profile for more details. In case you're interested, I'd be happy to share a digital copy of one of the anthos! 7y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant That's Great😀 7y
RohitSawant @Tiyas7 Cool! Drop me a line at rohitsawantfiction [at] gmail [dot] com 7y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant I Myself write a bit, but I've not been that 'Fortunate' enough, and all my works are happily rotting in my diaries (a place they must be 4 ever, cause they're awful😃). But will surely like to check your works😊👍 7y
Tiyas7 @rohit-sawant Will Do Soon!!✌ 7y
BeansPage Ooooooooo gods help me, there are WAY too many. I started to write my list but I got way too big LOL I will say though my all-time favorite will always be Poe. He was no less than a genius among men when it came to writing. Second only to PO would have to be Lovecraft in my book. I love his writing style and sentence structure. It is very smooth and elegant and though it was written so long ago is still very easy to follow and easy to scare 😉 7y
BookwormAHN Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Clive Barker, Edgar Allan Poe & Joe Hill 🎈 7y
Tiyas7 @Syndelle777 Poe Was Unique In His Approach!! Just Love Him!!! And Lovecraft, despite all his character flaws, was a Magician of weaving fearful thoughts. 7y
Tiyas7 @BookwormAHN Guess No Lists can be completed without Poe & King!!! And Barker is an awesome pick too 7y
kidamy I have a lot I like, but Robert Bloch💀, Ramsay Campbell👹, and Lovecraft 👾 top my list. 💕 7y
Bookish_AF Stephen King! 7y
ReadZenRites She usually classified as a psychological thriller writer, but Tess Gerritsen usually scares the 💩 out of me. 7y
EricQiao King, of course, but he hasn‘t really scared me in a while. The last book I read that gave me the creeps was 7y
Reggie Barker was my favorite because he, there is no other way to put this other than, he was the one that told me love and shit, magic and horror all existed in the same world. He was the one who I stayed up until 2-3a.m. at our kitchen table when I was a teenager reading The Great and Secret Show, Everville, Weaveworld. Robert McCammon is my other favorite- The Border, A Boy‘s Life, Swan Song, Blue World. 7y

Bailey's home and we are eating breakfast for dinner and starting our next #horrorpost.

#nightmaresahead

Melissa_J I can eat breakfast foods all day! 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Melissa_J Me too. I have a soft spot for French toast and biscuits and gravy and bacon. 😂😂😂😂 7y
Melissa_J Now I‘m hungry for bacon 🥓 7y

LauraBeth How was Bailey‘s vacation? 😂 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @LauraBeth She might have had more fun than I did. I get there to pick her up and she's wrestling with their puppy and following their toddler around while he drops mini muffins on the floor. She didn't want to get in the car. 😂😂😂 7y

I received my #horrorpost today from @JenlovesJT47 when I arrived home from vacay this morning. I'm so excited! One I've never heard of and the other is one of my all time favorites and I can't wait to reread. 🎉🎉

Also, thanks for the snacks lady!

Ashley_Nicoletto @Kappadeemom Thanks for sharing a little about yourself in your journal. $20 million in 14 years is amazing! I can't wait to read your pick. 7y
JenlovesJT47 Both of these books were great! Hope you enjoy 😊 7y

Received this yesterday but am a bit late in posting. Received not one but two books for #HorrorPost for #NightmaresAhead from @Kappadeemom - happy they all made it here in one piece! 😅And thank you so much for the awesome notebook (middle), it will definitely be put to good use! Also received my first letter from my awesome #litsypenpal @readsusieread - absolutely LOVE the cat drawings! Can't wait to send you something. 🤗💚

Well, we had a little snafu with the post office for the first #horrorpost package sent by @Kappadeemom - she mailed it 3 weeks ago and thought it was lost for good, so she sent a replacement package yesterday. Naturally I came home last night and the first package was there. Bad news is the book is gone, good news is the journal is intact, along with the beautiful bookmark she sent me. Thank you so much!

JenlovesJT47 @Kappadeemom sorry that you had to deal with this, the post office has been crazy lately! Looking forward to reading the book when I receive it. ☺️ And did I mention that the bookmark you sent is my favorite color? Many thanks again! 🤗💚 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto Nothing good comes from "we care" notices from the post office. ?? 7y

I am SO incredibly excited to read my first #horrorpost. Thank you so much for sending it @JenlovesJT47 and for the tea!

Also, guys. Check out this awesome notebook.

JenlovesJT47 Yay!! I thought the notebook was so cool, I found it on Amazon. ☺️ 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @JenlovesJT47 It's perfect! Just FYI I'll be moving probably around the time it's time to send the next one out. Same general area just a different suburb. I'll send out my new address but I didn't want you to send anything else and have it end up lost. 😘😘 7y
