An indie horror that has developed a cult following on social media! Author Dathan Auerbach creates an atmospheric, eerie thriller concerning an unnamed narrator who is trying to fill the gaps of childhood memories as an adult. This includes a school penpal project that leads to the disappearance of his best friend, a supernatural element, a weird stalker, and childhood traumas. Auerbach really knows how to write to our deepest fears.

This book is just pure dread and plays on childhood fear and the fear of parents. Not very gory but genuinely scary. 4⭐️

I bought the hype, but the hype let me down. This is a slow moving, repetitive and relatively tame story about a man trying to remember a very specific time in his life that traumatized him. Except that nothing much happens and the novel‘s early promise is never really realized. It started its life as individual stories on creepypasta and was self published…an editor might have helped with some of the disjointedness and pacing.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I enjoyed this one but I also knew nothing about it beforehand. I can see how it could be a let down if it was hyped up a lot. 😅 11mo

I really wanted to like this more than I did. It has so much hype. It has some genuinely creepy moments, especially the whole chapter about Boxes. But between the overly flowery language and the (non) choices of the mom, I dunno…I was disappointed.

I don‘t know which one of you lovely people sent me this in one of the previous swaps I did, but THANK YOU! I don‘t think I would have ever found it on my own. It‘s an interesting take on horror. Anytime an author can bring back the childhood feelings of irrational fear and naïve innocence, it really gets me. Definitely a creepy read that I just couldn‘t put down.

This book was amazingly told and written. It is in our top 5 books of 2022. And the ending is devastating and made me cry. 20/10 would recommend. A quick read and a page turner, twists in every chapter.

I read this 2012 novel in one captivated sitting, and spent much of that time shivering from the profound creepiness of the experience. The adult narrator reflects on disparate childhood events, weaving together their horrifying significance strand by strand. The plot builds a believable world with efficiency, clarity and subtlety - Auerbach leans heavily on the frightening power of implication. What you don‘t see or understand is always scarier.

So I definitely got spooked a bit with this book, but the way things pieces out and kind of jumped around was a little confusing at times. It was an interesting premise and like I said, did give me chills at time but I think ultimately it was the structure of the story that just made this a so-so for me

It was my #bookspin for September though so that‘s another off the list

This is a difficult book to categorize. It‘s definitely unsettling, creepy and sad. I found myself confused by portions due to the non-linear timeline.

What unfolds is an unnaturally way of storytelling, so it leaves you with a feeling of discomfort. The thing is, i read this book in like 2 days because i needed to keep going back to unravel this mystery. I felt so compelled.

It‘s an interesting way of telling a mystery.

This one is hard to review. The story itself is chilling. A terrifying account of a young boy's gradual recollection of the darker parts of his past. It's really something to read. The author originally created this story thread on reddit and it blew up. I like the original threads better than the novel. I don't think it needed to be fluffed up. I highly recommend reading these but maybe save a few bucks and check the Reddit post or 👇👇👇

This book is creepy AF. At work I am constantly surrounded by some pretty terrible humans (the inmates, not the officers... Most of the time). I read this in just under 6 hours on the midnight shift. When I say my heart was pounding from one chapter to the next I am not exaggerating. There are few books that truly give me a scary vibe but this one did! The author created so much suspense. The human behavior is what makes this one so unsettling.

FelinesAndFelonies If you read this one and LOVED it, can you please recommend some equally creepy AF books please? 3y
Reggie I read this when I worked graveyard and I remembered being the only one in the break room one night with the hair standing up on my arms. Also, this made me glad I don‘t have kids. 3y
Reggie Try maybe the tagged books… 3y
FelinesAndFelonies @Reggie For real. I was sitting at my desk with the lights on. It was uncharacteristically quiet for the prison and I could hear my heart racing. I got goosebumps several times. Thank you for the suggestion! I'm going to look them up. 💜 3y

So this was one of those … not the right fit (probably more like not the right time to read it). I just couldn‘t really get into it.

This was my #BookSpin book. Had to DNF it :(

jb72 I had a DNF on my bingo as well. Just not in the right mind set. 3y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I think that was the case for me too. Like ts just not my thing right now. Maybe later it would have been okay. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Sometimes a book just doesn't click. Too many good ones out there to waste time on the ones that don't work!! 3y
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks totally agreed! This DNF-ing books is a new development for me. I used to NEVER DNF a book. I felt too guilty! How silly is that!? 3y
TheAromaofBooks It took me a long time, too. I feel like when I was growing up, going to the library was such a big deal, walking around & choosing the books for the next few weeks & I always felt obligated to finish them no matter what. But now I have a HUGE list of books I want to read/try so I don't have time to waste on books that aren't for me... but it's taken an effort to get over that guilty abandoned-book feeling!! 3y

2. Kids in danger, being stalked. I remember reading some of it at work and having the hair on my arms stand up.

Palimpsest I‘m hungry! Empanadas sound amazing right now! Also the first time I saw the Village which was just last year I loved it. I was quite surprised. When I watched it again I thought how come I didn‘t “catch” the details like the teacher and the cruel deaths the family members of the villagers had, but I‘m glad I didn‘t because it made the movie for me. 4y
Reggie @Palimpsest ya know, I‘ve never had the meat kind. My grandma has only ever made the fruit kind for us. One day. Yeah, I think sometimes in movies we go so wide eyed into it.
