Girl in the Blue Coat (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Girl in the Blue Coat (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Monica Hesse
An unforgettable story of bravery, grief, and love in impossible times"Girl in the Blue Coat is a powerful, compelling coming-of-age story set against the dark and dangerous backdrop of World War II. It's an important and page-turning look at the choices all of us-including young adults-have to make in wartime. A beautiful combination of heartbreak, loss, young love, and hope." -Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale "A tapestry of guilt and acceptance, growing responsibility, and reluctant heroism, Hanneke's coming-of-age under heartbreaking circumstances is a jarring reminder of how war consumes and transforms the passions of ordinary life. Every devastating moment of this beautiful novel is both poignant and powerful, and every word feels true." -Elizabeth Wein, New York Times bestselling author of Code Name Verity Amsterdam, 1943. Hanneke spends her days procuring and delivering sought-after black market goods to paying customers, her nights hiding the true nature of her work from her concerned parents, and every waking moment mourning her boyfriend, who was killed on the Dutch front lines when the Germans invaded. She likes to think of her illegal work as a small act of rebellion. On a routine delivery, a client asks Hanneke for help. Expecting to hear that Mrs. Janssen wants meat or kerosene, Hanneke is shocked by the older woman's frantic plea to find a person-a Jewish teenager Mrs. Janssen had been hiding, who has vanished without a trace from a secret room. Hanneke initially wants nothing to do with such dangerous work, but is ultimately drawn into a web of mysteries and stunning revelations that lead her into the heart of the resistance, open her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi war machine, and compel her to take desperate action.Beautifully written, intricately plotted, and meticulously researched, Girl in the Blue Coat is an extraordinary, gripping novel from a bright new voice.

This is a light pick. I haven‘t read a mystery set during the Holocaust before and I‘m just not 100% sure it worked. It wasn‘t a bad story but there wasn‘t anything that stands out as brilliant in this novel. I previously read & liked another by Hesse and plan to give her another chance in the future.

This was such a good book. I was transported to 1943 Amsterdam. I‘ve been to Amsterdam & it was great to read a book that takes place there. It was well-paced. Perfect mixture of character development & action/story. It was so well researched & that‘s always appreciated in a book. I felt for Hanneke & those she meets along the way. You could feel the strain of the Nazi occupation. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Inspired in true facts that happened to Jewish infants during WWII in Amsterdam. Hanneke thought was surviving the war in the best way she could but she will learn that there are other terrible trues. Then, she will try to accomplish a promise, she will look for the girl in the blue coat. A fast pace read that goes from past to present. Hanneke sometimes is impulsive in her decisions putting in danger others. I like the writing style. 4⭐️

Gissy My heart is broken every time I read about WWII or about any other war. But how there are still persons that believe that the Holocaust was not true? How? How one person controlled others to commit all those atrocities? It was terrible and I like to read how was the situation in different countries. We can‘t allow anything similar to happen, just kill persons because they are from different race, culture, or because any other reason. 3y

staci.reads @Jerdencon @shellleigh33 I am finishing Girl in the Blue Coat today. I'm wondering if I should send it directly to you, Denise, since Lauren is no longer on Litsy and isn't answering emails. Should I bypass her? What are both your thoughts? 3y
shellleigh33 Did she write anything in either of the other books she sent you @Jerdencon bc I noticed she sent mine with hers to you? Did she say anything when she mailed those to you about her not being on Litsy or changing her name? 3y
Jerdencon @shellleigh33 @staci.reads I haven‘t heard anything from Lauren at all - and haven‘t gotten this months book either. Two months ago she had sent me the two books at once with no writing in it and no note or anything - just the books. So does everyone else have their books back now? Im so confused with the order! 3y
staci.reads @shellleigh33 @Jerdencon OK, if she didn't wven write in the first 2 I sent her, then I will just bypass her for Girl in the Blue Coat, and return it directly to you, Denise. It should be your original and the final book you get. Lauren should have sent Leave the World as your April book, Girl, Woman, Other for May, and Tell the Wolves I'm Home for your June book. Looks like she just passed them on when I sent them to her. 3y
staci.reads @Jerdencon @shellleigh33 I don't have mine back yet. Michelle is reading it this month. Lauren would have been reading yours this month, Denise, if it hadn't disappeared in the postal system for 6 weeks 😄. I'll get it to you soon! I should be getting Leave the World Behind any day now, so I will go ahead and mail that back to Lauren. I hope all that makes sense. 3y

A book about teenagers living in 1943 in an Amsterdam, that is occupied by Nazis. Main character Hanneke is good at finding and delivering black market things - but everything changes, when she is is requested to find a jewish girl- before the Nazis do. I was very much invested in the story, even though I didn‘t always like the main charakter‘s headiness- but she was just a teenage girl after all and is allowed to act like one😅 5/5🌟

My club's next read - Didn't want to read it. Dreaded it. Procrastinated.

New generations of readers and learners are coming. They won't choose Anne or Corrie first to learn.

Hesse wrote a brilliant young adult novel along the lines of Ruta Sepetys. A jealous teen, not thinking, ruins lives. And while trying to fix her mistake, loses hers. Teens will understand and learn about the resistance movements. Then will research on their own.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this! I honestly haven't read many books set during World War II outside of Germany, Russia, France and the United States so this was a nice fresh perspective. I loved the mystery of this with the missing girl and I have to commend the author for not taking the easy way out in this ending. I loved the main character and her interactions with the resistance.

100% would recommend. The story takes place during WW2 and takes you through the journey of young adults. It encompasses mystery, love, friendship, heartache and life. It isn‘t AS predictable of an ending as one would think while reading. Easy to read book, will finish quickly.

vkois88 How was The Summer I Turned Pretty? I'm so hit or miss with Han's books. I have the #UnpopularOpinion of not really caring for the To All The Boys series. Though I did enjoy the movie. Lara Jean was just... insufferable, at times. That's the only way I can think of to describe her. 6y
Eggs I liked the Pretty trilogy. The 3rd one made the other two more meaningful. Same with the Boys I've Loved trilogy. But I can see that insufferable thing in the movie 😂 6y

It's told through the eyes of Hanneke Bakker, an eighteen year old whose boyfriend was killed fighting during the German invasion. She is involved in finding and selling black market goods to the wealthier people in town but then becomes involved in searching for a missing girl. This causes her to cross paths with a group of young people involved in the resistance and she sees for herself what is happening in her own town.I cried several times it.

This book is about a brace girl named Hanneke who lives in Amsterdam during WW2. She works on the black market taking different items to people. But when one of her customers asks her to find a Jewish girl that she was hiding in her house and that has now disappeared. All Hanneke knows about the girl is she was wearing a blue coat. As she unravels the mystery she covers more than the truth. I can't imagine living in this time.

Finished this one for #BackPackEurope and the #GenreSwapPBC and absolutely loved it. It was such a beautiful story touching on the entire spectrum of emotions, showing the human side of the Holocaust in ways I hadn't previously considered.

The above pictured Hollandsche Schouwburg theatre (now a museum) was a heavily featured location in the book, one I'd be honored to visit one day in person.
