Fool's Assassin: Book I of the Fitz and the Fool Trilogy
Fool's Assassin: Book I of the Fitz and the Fool Trilogy | Robin Hobb
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNearly twenty years ago, Robin Hobb burst upon the fantasy scene with the first of her acclaimed Farseer novels, Assassin s Apprentice, which introduced the characters of FitzChivalry Farseer and his uncanny friend the Fool. A watershed moment in modern fantasy, this novel and those that followed broke exciting new ground in a beloved genre. Together with George R. R. Martin, Robin Hobb helped pave the way for such talented new voices as Scott Lynch, Brandon Sanderson, and Naomi Novik. Over the years, Hobb s imagination has soared throughout the mythic lands of the Six Duchies in such bestselling series as the Liveship Traders Trilogy and the Rain Wilds Chronicles. But no matter how far she roamed, her heart always remained with Fitz. And now, at last, she has come home, with an astonishing new novel that opens a dark and gripping chapter in the Farseer saga. FitzChivalry royal bastard and former king s assassin has left his life of intrigue behind. As far as the rest of the world knows, FitzChivalry Farseer is dead and buried. Masquerading as Tom Badgerlock, Fitz is now married to his childhood sweetheart, Molly, and leading the quiet life of a country squire. Though Fitz is haunted by the disappearance of the Fool, who did so much to shape Fitz into the man he has become, such private hurts are put aside in the business of daily life, at least until the appearance of menacing, pale-skinned strangers casts a sinister shadow over Fitz s past . . . and his future. Now, to protect his new life, the former assassin must once again take up his old one. . . . Praise for Fool s Assassin Hobb knows the complicated workings of the wayward human heart, and she takes time to depict them in her tale, to tell her story sweetly, insistently, compellingly. . . . A book meant to be inhabited rather than run through. The Seattle Times [FitzChivalry Farseer is] one of the best characters in fantasy literature. Fantasy Book Review [Hobb s] prose sparkles, her characters leap off the page. Tor.com Modern fantasy at its irresistible best. The Guardian Fantastic . . . emotionally rich storytelling. Library Journal (starred review)Praise for Robin Hobb Fantasy as it ought to be written . . . Robin Hobb s books are diamonds in a sea of zircons. George R. R. Martin From the Hardcover edition."

As much as I enjoy Hobb‘s writing, I feel like I‘ve taken an emotional beating every time I finish one. And the cliff hangers! The characters get such a hold on your heart. I love these books but I think I need a rom-com chaser or maybe a fantasy or sci-fi with a happy ending. 😄

1. Regal, from Robin Hobbs Farseer books. Honestly hate him with a passion.

2. I have never cried as hard as I did at the death of a character in the tagged book. I don't want to spoiler it for anyone though. But it's stayed with me.

3. I used to live there so let's go for Terry Deary from Sunderland!

Wow. Took a couple of chapters to get my head out of the Rainwilds and back to FitzChivalry, but once I did.... And... she's still awfully good at torturing the poor guy.

Complex and wonderful characters, twists and turns, and terrifically written story.

Talk about tension! My stomach was in knots all through this book! Stayed up until 1am to finish it and I‘ll be picking up the next in the series first thing in the morning. A few new characters introduced in this one and as always, they were so well written. It was great to see Fitz again, even if he does keep F‘ing everything up! This time we see him from a different perspective and in a different phase of his life, which is really interesting.

TrishB Excellent series 👍🏻 3y

Best part of having a dad who reads the same kinda of books as you (well for the most part) is I can always go raid his bookshelf. These books appear on multiple lists of the best fantasy books/series of all time so I figured it was time I should give them a go. My goal is to at least have read 1 of these before the end of summer but I guess we shall see.

I visited B&N this morning with a gift card from my mom ❤️📚. Here‘s what I brought home! I‘m planning on going to the B&N bookclub meeting for Sea Women in April, anyone else? It‘ll be my first one!

My next Robin Hobb read inspired by @Mitch 😊. I have done the last 2 on audio, but my library doesn‘t have this one, so print it is!

On book buying bans- how do we feel about Library sales to find books to send to friends? 🤔?

I love returning to the world of Fitz, the Fool, assassins, intrigues and drama, and this book gave me all the feels. While some things annoy me a tiny bit, all the other great things make up for it. And with a cliff hanger ending like that, I‘m so glad I have the next two books ready of my shelf!

I‘m shelving my personal library after moving apartments this summer. This is part of my secondary paper book TBR. Which should be bumped up?
These range from “have wanted to read for ages” to “picked up on a whim at ALAMW 2016” and I need your help deciding if any are must-reads for me 🤓
About my reading preferences: queer, POC, neurodiverse stories to the front! UN-recommends also appreciated. #askLitsy

zembla I've heard great things about We Love You, Charlie Freeman and The Geek Feminist Revolution, but I haven't read either yet. I'm definitely hoping to read the former in 2019. 6y
Sweettartlaura Bel Canto is one of my top 10 books ever. Move it up 👍🏻. And People of the Book is beautiful 🙂 Make that one happen soon, too. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Elma I haven't read it yet, but Will Grayson, Will Grayson is supposed to be great queer ya fiction. 6y
kgriffith @Sweettartlaura Bel Canto was a tossup for primary vs secondary, so your vote tips the scales! Got another one for People of the Book on fb so that‘s two votes there, I‘m thinking it‘s gonna make the cut 😃 6y
kgriffith @christinamcc if it doesn‘t make it to my primary list, I‘ll definitely be watching others‘ posts to see if they inform my decision to bump anything as the year goes! 6y
kgriffith @LMJenkins This is one that‘s come up over and over in the last several years, and I think maybe I was just looking for someone to say “read this.” 🙂 6y
Sweettartlaura Whoo hoo 🙌🏻 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The only one I've read is Bel Canto. It wasnt bad. It's a slow story, but it makes the ending more impactful that way. 6y
julesG The Eco. Always good writing! 6y
rwmg Bel Canto for all round excellence. Also has ethnic and linguistic diversity 6y
rwmg Though I should admit I haven't read the others 6y
Susanita I loved Bel Canto and People of the Book. 6y
Soubhiville I absolutely love Robin Hobb! 6y
corycatelyn The only one I've read is will grayson, will grayson. It was good 😊 6y
Well-ReadNeck I second all of the ones mentioned above. Also loved 6y

I read this book like an addict and have already downloaded the next in the series from my library.

Fitz is faced consistently with choices that all have less than desired outcomes. I don't want to give many details lest I spoil it for anyone but I will just say that the beginning of this series is another stellar volume in Hobb's work involving FitzChilvary.

Mehso-so

Drags. There was one part where I thought I'd lost my place because Fitz was ruminating over the same topic again and I remembered reading that bit already.

Yeah_I_Read I liked the first book The Assasins Apprentice so I read the first 3 I couldn‘t get into the the Ship of Magic series or w.e. I thought it was so repetitive and the characters were past ridiculous. I know a lot of people love this author but for me it‘s just meh 🤷🏽‍♀️ (edited) 6y

Normally, #bookmail makes my day, but I became just a tiny, little bit disappointed when I saw the second and third book of the Fitz and the Fool trilogy were shorter than the first and all my other Hobb books 😩 I‘m planning on returning them, and getting them in the right size, because otherwise I might have gone a little mad everytime I looked at them. All the other books are wonderful, though, and I can‘t wait to get to them 👏👍

laurieluna I hate that! I couldn't find the UK hardback of assassins quest when I eventually got round to buying it so I have the US one. Looks odd having UK, US, UK. 😕 Hopefully find the UK one at some point. 6y

For anyone familiar with these books... I just finished The Farseer trilogy and I have this but I know that there is the Tawny Man series that comes first but would I be able to read this before Tawny Man and not be totally lost 😬? TIA

xicanti I strongly recommend you start with ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE--the first book in the Farseer Trilogy--and work your way forward in publication order. Hobb's books all build on one another, so while you might not be completely list you'll miss out on a lot of the effect if you start with this one. 6y
xicanti Argh, sorry, I got hung up on the Tawny Man and missed how you've already read the Farseer books. Your next stop is SHIP OF MAGIC in the Liveship Traders Trilogy. 6y

I experienced this in audiobook. It made my long commute to work better. It was not what I expected, however I really enjoyed it immensely! I immediately went to the next installment. YAY! It does not have the "romance" with characters like Sarah Maas. However it is there with a lot of the unexpected. I loved it. If you decide to try it, please let me know your thoughts.

I love the hell out of FOOL'S ASSASSIN, but I tried to reread it at a point where I needed something upbeat--and while Hobb is occasionally funny, a feel-good happy-fest she ain't. Consequently, I stumbled and had to take a couple weeks off to tackle some shorter books before I dove back in and finished it. Hopefully I can reread FOOL'S QUEST in a more timely fashion so I can finally see how everything ends in ASSASSIN'S FATE.

I love to recommend pretty much anything by Robin Hobb. Her books are epic & magical & surprisingly real fantasy, and I adore the world-building of the Six Duchies. They get a little confusing because every one either has 'fool' or 'assassin' or both in the title, but I THINK the FitzChivalry Farseer book you wanna start with is Assassin's Apprentice. #17booklove

Mehso-so

My choice for the letter H for #LitsyAtoZ.

think the main reason this is just so-so for me is because I like some of the author's other books so much better. This book ended on a big cliffhanger, but I don't really feel the need to read the next book in the series. Still, it was nice to see families characters again and I plan on reading the sequel (probably closer to when the third book in this trilogy comes out).
