This was so much fun. I enjoyed reading Jane's chapters, and even though I wish she could have finished the book herself, I felt the part written by Another Lady was true to her spirit.

Thanks to #PemberLittens , I finally had an opportunity to read this one! I think the “Another Lady” captured the essence of Austen‘s words well - it‘s not an exact copy, but the spirit is there. It was an enjoyable stroll through Sanditon & its menagerie of eccentric characters and situations. I‘ll probably think of seaweed differently now!
I finished this morning surrounded by my boys. #SebastianKitty #Zeke #Xander #Vladimir #catsoflitsy
I knew this was going to be finished today, it hit that point where I didn‘t want to put it down! My #doublebookspin is done; I haven‘t missed one yet!! @TheAromaofBooks
As a Jane Austen, it‘s ok. As anybody else, it was quite good. Admittedly I have had very little time to read or attention span for it recently (momming all day and practicing/gigging in the evenings for the past two weeks), so that is likely affecting my experience. Glad to have read this with #PemberLittens and I‘d consider trying another version at some point.
Chapter 9, and it's a veritable parade of weird Parker siblings! Miss Susan talks non-stop like everyone else Charlotte has met, and goes nowhere without her salts and phials; Miss Diana continues to put herself out for the sake of a person she's never met; and Mr. Arthur takes the cake with his daily ration of hot cocoa and his skills with toast. Never burned, never too near the fire, but always well-browned; give this guy a medal! #PemberLittens
Chapter 8! Charlotte spots a new arrival in town and runs off to tell the Parkers. But a total creeper of a lady is hot on her heels; turns out it's sister Diana! Through a very Ferris Bueller-esque chain of people, Diana has heard of Mrs. Griffiths of the West Indies who wants to take a place in Old Sandy this summer. Di knows she's just the person to make it happen because she's strong in mind and needs to be USEFUL! #PemberLittens
Clawing my way back onto the #PemberLittens wagon! Chapter 7 brings us Sir Edward absolutely droning on and on (and on...) about poetry in an effort to make Clara jealous. Charlotte sees through his tactic and is not having it, so she's forced to buddy up with Lady Denham instead. Lady D also talks on and on, full of self-importance, and it's around this time I imagine Charlotte must be considering just walking straight out into the sea to escape.
Caught up on chapters 10-14 tonight (OK, 14 is reading ahead for tomorrow because well, Monday). What did I learn? 1) Don‘t got to Sanditon with bronchial conditions like asthma because it‘ll kill you. 2) I don‘t mind not going to Sanditon because if the sea air on my asthma didn‘t kill me, sitting around with all of these people going on & on about their own & each other‘s health issues would definitely do the job! 🤧🤒😷🤕😱
#PemberLittens
My March #ayearofjaneausten read was Volume 3 Julvenalia. Quite the juxtaposition reading Sanditon immediately after. You could definitely see her growth as a writer and brilliance of what could have been. 📖 🧗♀️😔

Chapter 11 brings us to the end of Jane Austen‘s writing in her last (unfinished) novel. Charlotte is determined to see Sanditon House at last, and meets the newly arrived, very handsome Sidney Parker on the way. A little drama with Clara canoodling with Sir Edward, and we just get into Lady Denham‘s abode when it ends.
I loved this! I know it wasn‘t edited, but such wit and satire-it‘s a shame it wasn‘t completed by the master.⬇️
#PemberLittens
Playing catch-up tonight (work was too much this week 😆). Chapters 9 & 10 bring NEW PEOPLE! We meet Arthur, who turns out to not be sick so much as fond of food & lazing around, & while I can relate sometimes, Charlotte is not impressed. Diana‘s house rental is a fail when Mrs. Griffiths arrives with (only) 3 charges: Miss Lambe is very rich & perhaps actually sickly, & the Miss Beauforts are of course in want of rich husbands.
Charlotte meets Arthur, who likes his food, his good cocoa and toast and does not like wind and hills.
Diana has been all day running around not only renting a house for Mrs Griffith, but also hiring all the staff to run it.A letter from Mrs Dupuis arrives hand delivered by a Mrs Griffith, asking to be introduced to the Parker's society, but surely must be another Mrs Griffith, it can be that she rented a house without the aid of Diana! #Pemberlittens
Miss Diana comes to Sanditon, apparently Susan and Arthur are also here, all of them are still feeling dreadful, but they had to come to get the house for Mrs Griffith. Mrs Griffith has 6 degrees with Kevin Bacon and 7 with Miss Diana, but she has such a strong spirit that she had to come over and get a house that will probably be of the appropriate size for whatever number of family members Mrs Griffith has.

Still trying to catch up with Sanditon.
We learn that Sir Edward is interested in sentimental novels in order to get ideas as to how to seduce women. Although ge likes to flirt in general, his main interest is to seduce Clara. She is not interested at all, not that he cares..."if she couldn't be won by affection, he must carry her off". Fortunately he doesn't have the money to take her to Timbuctoo
#Pemberlittens
A gentleman & a lady are overturned in their carriage while toiling up a "long ascent of half rock, half sand". This rocky beginning to an Austen novel is indication enough that "Sanditon will be unlike any other novel Austen wrote", as Kathryn Sunderland says in her intro. I'm sad that this remains uncompleted because Austen died too soon. There is a wild energy to this story: irreverent, uncompromisingly satirical, & weird, like a comic caper.
#PemberLittens
Ch 8: Charlotte is excited to see a new carriage being unpacked, and rushes home to tell Mr. Parker with someone new following her. The stranger turns out to be poor sickly Diana Parker, who has traveled in haste with her dreadfully ill siblings in order to secure the biggest house possible for the West Indian family (of indeterminate size), who she knows only fourth or fifth hand, who may or may not come to Sanditon to stay in it.
Charlotte meets Sir Edward Denham, first she feels a bit flattered by his attentions, but soon she realises that he is also making his moves on Clara. The more he speaks the more than Charlotte realises that he is just a buffoon.
Lady Denham tells Charlotte that Edward and Esther must marry for money and that she has no intention to invite them to stay in Sanditon because she doesn't want to spend the money. Charlotte is not impressed.
#Pemberlittens
I'm a couple of days behind with #Pemberlittens Sanditon
Charlotte meets Lady Denham and Miss Brereton. During the tea we discover that Lady Denham doesn't like the butcher's meat being raised by the West Indians purchases and Mr Parker replies that if the butcher gets rich they pay the rent and make THEM rich and MUAHAHA CAPITALISM. Also Lady Denham doesn't like doctors
#PemberLittens
Ch 7: Our plucky heroine realizes quickly that the Denhams are a bunch of a$$holes & Mr. Parker is either a terrible judge of character or too invested in Sanditon dreams to care. Miss Denham is a snotty brat to everyone except Lady D, Sir Edward is a fake, foppish literature snob who is apparently resolved on taking out his rival Clara by any means necessary, & Lady D herself is the absolute worst: throughly mean & selfish. ⬇️⬇️
Austen doesn't hold back from skewering the sensitive litbro archetype & his capacity for "great Taste & Feeling" ?
#pemberlittens #Chapter7
Teatime with Lady D and Clara! While Charlotte admires Clara as a pure storybook heroine (hopefully no Catherine Moreland nonsense ensues!), Parker and Denham talk over the development of the town. They need more visitors and more money- but if the family from the West Indies spends TOO freely, why, they'll ruin everything! Mr. Parker tries to talk some sense into Lady D. and she lets it go, but I'm giving some major side-eye to this conversation.
#PemberLittens
Ch 6: An after-dinner library trip ends when the Parkers and Charlotte meet up with Lady Denham and Clara, who return home with them for tea. Charlotte thinks that Clara would be a great novel heroine, except that she doesn‘t seem abused by Lady D. The city founders discuss Sanditon business, Lady D disparages the potential next guests (🤞🏻 some are consumptive!). Mr. P‘s trip/injury was in vain because Sanditon needs no doctor!
Chapter 5 brings a letter from Mr. Parker's sister Diana, who has recently decided to stand staunchly against the 1817 medical-industrial complex. I might side-eye that take here in 2022, but I'm FULLY ON BOARD WITH IT in this case. If I saw a doctor try to cure *a headache* with six days of leeches and then ripping out three teeth, I would also be like, "Nah, doc, I'm good, just gonna rub this sprained ankle a little harder, don't mind me!"
Chapter 4 takes us on a little tour of Sanditon, past the house where Mr. Parker grew up and into the new town where shops are springing up all over the place! And of course we catch a glimpse of the beach and my very favorite throwback vacay must-have: the bathing machine! 😂

#PemberLittens
Chapter 4 finally in Sanditon with it's shops with modern shoes. We learn that Mrs Parker can talk about gardens as much as Mr Parker about Sanditon
Chapter 5 we learn some things about Mr Parker's family: Susan, Diana and Arthur won't come to Sanditon because they are sick as always although they don't believe in doctors; also we learn that "Sidney is a saucy fellow" and I can't get over it. #Pemberlittens
#PemberLittens
Ch 5: Before dinner, Mr. Parker is bothered by no letter from brother Sidney (where is the concern for ankle?!), but entertains the Mrs. and Charlotte with a letter from near-death sister Diana, who lives with tragically ill sister Susan & dreadfully sick/lazy brother Arthur. All are too busy dealing with their maladies to visit Sanditon, but are sending a couple of families.
Excited to meet Sidney… he might be my kind of guy.😂
#PemberLittens
Ch 4: Almost to Sanditon, our group passes a lovely country home which turns out to be the ancestral former home of Mr. Parker. Mrs. Parker speaks! And it seems she maybe misses the old house, but Mr. P. clearly prefers the new house in Sanditon. They pass through Old Sanditon, which is still trendy with its blue shoes, in to New Sanditon, a tourist trap under development, to the new, modern Parker house on a windy hill by the sea.
#Pemberlittens Ch.4 of Sanditon - we learn that Mr.Parker has a brother who “speaks his mind” named Sidney; we also learn that Sanditon is civilized- they sell blue shoes there! They finally arrive at Mr.Parker‘s house which is better than his old house, which was built in a hole down the road.
Lady Denham, the "great lady" of Sanditon, is absolutely rolling in it, and honestly, I respect it 100%. Her first marriage (at age 30!!!! Old maid showing out!!!) to a rich dude ended up with her accumulating a ton of money. Her second marriage got her a title, and you can tell this BAMF has no regrets. Now she's taken in a distant relation, seemingly having saved her from a horrible Fanny Price-esque lot. I want to meet her asap! #PemberLittens
#PemberLittens
Ch 3: On the road to Sanditon, Mr. Parker educates Charlotte on the neighborhood‘s Great Lady Denham, who was born to wealth, married once for even more wealth, a second time for a title, outlived both of her husbands, and is living her best life doing whatever she wants, confounding men & elevating poor relation Clara to possible heiress status to the chagrin of other maybe-heirs & hangers-on. Charlotte is fascinated with Clara.
#200PnPCovers #children In Sanditon it is mentioned that the Heywoods have 14 children! And they all live happily together in a “cottage”. The concept of Regency women being perpetually pregnant was very real - with 14 kids I can imagine Mrs.Heywood didn‘t often get a break…and the average regency household had at least 8 children.
#Pemberlittens in Ch.3 on the way to his beloved Sanditon, Mr.Parker tells Charlotte all about the great lady of Sanditon, Lady Denham and her poor relation, Clara. He goes on about Clara and sings her praises but I don‘t trust this - I think there will be more to Clara than meets the eye.
We learn in Sanditon lives Lady Denham, who has a lot of money inherited from her first husband and a title inherited from the second. The relatives of both late husbands are waiting for the old lady to die so they can get her money, with Harry Denham being the favourite... that was until a poor relation, Clara Brereton goes to live with her and wins her heart as well as the heart of all Sanditon. #Pemberlittens
#PemberLittens
Ch 2: The Parkers end up staying with the Heywoods for a fortnight for ankle healing & the families become fast friends. Mr. Parker is a great family man & apparently the 1-man Sanditon tourism/city betterment department (he was doctor shopping for the town!) & is actively trying to get the Heywoods to come visit ASAP, but they are homebodies (same) & will instead send 1/14th of their kids: Charlotte Heywood.
Jane has me 😂 again!
Started Sanditon a day late, but here I am!Mr and Mrs Parker have an accident on the carriage and meet Mr Heywood.Mr Parker twisted his ankle and tells Mr Heywood all about it,and about how great is Sanditon, and about how he is looking for a surgeon, and about Sanditon, about his family...and about Sanditon, much better than Brinshore! After a staying some weeks to heal his ankle they return to Sanditon with one of Mr Heywood's daughters #Pemberlittens
#Pemberlittens Ch.2 of Sanditon has us hearing more about what a great place Sanditon is - in fact Mr.Parker won‘t stop going on about it! He preaches the benefits of sea bathing which can heal whatever ails you and is determined to get the Heywoods and all 14 of their offspring (!) to visit. The Heywoods don‘t go anywhere (I like these people) but they agree to send Charlotte, their eldest girl to Sanditon - probably so Parker will shut up.
Mr. Parker's sprained ankle strands he and his wife at the Heywoods' place, but no matter because they're all getting on swimmingly...so long as the Heywoods nod and smile and look beyond that whole, "dude never shuts up about Sanditon" thing. But Mr. Parker's bloviating has done some good, because Miss Charlotte Heywood is going to come and spend some time at the beach! Plot officially in motion! #PemberLittens
Chapter 1 begins with a bang- literally, the Parker's carriage goes banging over sideways because some idiot decided it'd be a good idea to head up a very rough lane that's half rock, half sand. The idiot in question is Mr. Parker, who soon doubles down by being snobby to the workers of Heywood's Hayfield, clueless about directions and town names, and an absolute blowhard about his beloved Sanditon. #PemberLittens, I think I'm gonna like it here!
#Pemberlittens! Sanditon, at last!
Ch 1 begins with a carriage crash. Mr. & Mrs. Parker are lost in the wrong (surgeon-less) Willingden on their way back to Sanditon, their seaside resort town which is far superior to all other seaside resort towns. Local gentle farmer and seaside resort town hater, Mr. Heywood, comes to the rescue; much gentlemanly banter ensues (Mrs. Parker standing by); disabled carriage & Mr. Parker are carried to the house.
The #Pemberlittens Jane Austen work for March/April is Sanditon. This book was not finished before Austen died, so we only have 11 chapters by Jane. I will be reading the edition pictured above, which has the original Austen chapters finished by ‘another lady‘ in the 1970s. This book has 30 chapters, and I will be reading one per day starting 3/1. @StayCurious is also planning daily posts of this edition, so follow her!

52 #PemberLittens have voted, and here are the books selected for March/April!

The Other Bennet Sister (9 votes) is our adaptation of an Austen book. I LOVE this book!
North & South (12 votes) is our other author book. I‘ve been wanting to read this forever, so I‘m excited!

That comical aspect of this time gave me quite a chuckle. The cringe-worthy ideal of capitalizing on people sick with nothing concrete to offer but clean air. The strange competition created between Bath and Sanditon...lol!

Happy Saturday! Watching Masterpiece's Sandition. I know nothing of this story. Nude seabathing? A niece openly badmouthing everyone and plotting to poison her rich aunt? Tight leather pants on the mysterious Sydney character? So risque, Jane! 🤣 Please comment if you have read the book or seen this film. #pemberlittens
