Thanks to #PemberLittens , I finally had an opportunity to read this one! I think the “Another Lady” captured the essence of Austen‘s words well - it‘s not an exact copy, but the spirit is there. It was an enjoyable stroll through Sanditon & its menagerie of eccentric characters and situations. I‘ll probably think of seaweed differently now!

I finished this morning surrounded by my boys. #SebastianKitty #Zeke #Xander #Vladimir #catsoflitsy

As a Jane Austen, it‘s ok. As anybody else, it was quite good. Admittedly I have had very little time to read or attention span for it recently (momming all day and practicing/gigging in the evenings for the past two weeks), so that is likely affecting my experience. Glad to have read this with #PemberLittens and I‘d consider trying another version at some point.

TheBookHippie I wondered about that as well, another version. I did enjoy this one more than I thought I would! 3y

Chapter 9, and it's a veritable parade of weird Parker siblings! Miss Susan talks non-stop like everyone else Charlotte has met, and goes nowhere without her salts and phials; Miss Diana continues to put herself out for the sake of a person she's never met; and Mr. Arthur takes the cake with his daily ration of hot cocoa and his skills with toast. Never burned, never too near the fire, but always well-browned; give this guy a medal! #PemberLittens

Chapter 8! Charlotte spots a new arrival in town and runs off to tell the Parkers. But a total creeper of a lady is hot on her heels; turns out it's sister Diana! Through a very Ferris Bueller-esque chain of people, Diana has heard of Mrs. Griffiths of the West Indies who wants to take a place in Old Sandy this summer. Di knows she's just the person to make it happen because she's strong in mind and needs to be USEFUL! #PemberLittens

Clawing my way back onto the #PemberLittens wagon! Chapter 7 brings us Sir Edward absolutely droning on and on (and on...) about poetry in an effort to make Clara jealous. Charlotte sees through his tactic and is not having it, so she's forced to buddy up with Lady Denham instead. Lady D also talks on and on, full of self-importance, and it's around this time I imagine Charlotte must be considering just walking straight out into the sea to escape.

Caught up on chapters 10-14 tonight (OK, 14 is reading ahead for tomorrow because well, Monday). What did I learn? 1) Don‘t got to Sanditon with bronchial conditions like asthma because it‘ll kill you. 2) I don‘t mind not going to Sanditon because if the sea air on my asthma didn‘t kill me, sitting around with all of these people going on & on about their own & each other‘s health issues would definitely do the job! 🤧🤒😷🤕😱

Chapter 11 brings us to the end of Jane Austen‘s writing in her last (unfinished) novel. Charlotte is determined to see Sanditon House at last, and meets the newly arrived, very handsome Sidney Parker on the way. A little drama with Clara canoodling with Sir Edward, and we just get into Lady Denham‘s abode when it ends.

I loved this! I know it wasn‘t edited, but such wit and satire-it‘s a shame it wasn‘t completed by the master.⬇️

sprainedbrain I‘m continuing on, in my version completed by ‘another lady.‘ After today, I will stop tagging as I know many were stopping here. So far (and it‘s only a couple pages), this author is keeping to Jane‘s style nicely… the chapter is ended with Lady Denham being a fussy, impatient hostess while waiting on Clara to get back (from canoodling) so that they can go secure a pony for Miss Lambe, who has no use for milch asses but does ride horses.😅 3y

Playing catch-up tonight (work was too much this week 😆). Chapters 9 & 10 bring NEW PEOPLE! We meet Arthur, who turns out to not be sick so much as fond of food & lazing around, & while I can relate sometimes, Charlotte is not impressed. Diana‘s house rental is a fail when Mrs. Griffiths arrives with (only) 3 charges: Miss Lambe is very rich & perhaps actually sickly, & the Miss Beauforts are of course in want of rich husbands.

Miss Diana comes to Sanditon, apparently Susan and Arthur are also here, all of them are still feeling dreadful, but they had to come to get the house for Mrs Griffith. Mrs Griffith has 6 degrees with Kevin Bacon and 7 with Miss Diana, but she has such a strong spirit that she had to come over and get a house that will probably be of the appropriate size for whatever number of family members Mrs Griffith has.

Still trying to catch up with Sanditon.

We learn that Sir Edward is interested in sentimental novels in order to get ideas as to how to seduce women. Although ge likes to flirt in general, his main interest is to seduce Clara. She is not interested at all, not that he cares..."if she couldn't be won by affection, he must carry her off". Fortunately he doesn't have the money to take her to Timbuctoo

A gentleman & a lady are overturned in their carriage while toiling up a "long ascent of half rock, half sand". This rocky beginning to an Austen novel is indication enough that "Sanditon will be unlike any other novel Austen wrote", as Kathryn Sunderland says in her intro. I'm sad that this remains uncompleted because Austen died too soon. There is a wild energy to this story: irreverent, uncompromisingly satirical, & weird, like a comic caper.

batsy At a mere 12 chapters, I couldn't resist reading ahead. It also brings home the point that the novel barely got going. It doesn't seem right to rate it, but it's a pick because I'm just going to regret forever that we never got the full thing. For the 21st-century reader, it might seem prescient about the contemporary wellness industry complex, but it also suggests that it has its roots in the 19th century. An odd little delight. #pemberlittens 3y

Teatime with Lady D and Clara! While Charlotte admires Clara as a pure storybook heroine (hopefully no Catherine Moreland nonsense ensues!), Parker and Denham talk over the development of the town. They need more visitors and more money- but if the family from the West Indies spends TOO freely, why, they'll ruin everything! Mr. Parker tries to talk some sense into Lady D. and she lets it go, but I'm giving some major side-eye to this conversation.

Ch 6: An after-dinner library trip ends when the Parkers and Charlotte meet up with Lady Denham and Clara, who return home with them for tea. Charlotte thinks that Clara would be a great novel heroine, except that she doesn‘t seem abused by Lady D. Chapter 1 begins with a bang- literally, the Parker's carriage goes banging over sideways because some idiot decided it'd be a good idea to head up a very rough lane that's half rock, half sand. The idiot in question is Mr. Parker, who soon doubles down by being snobby to the workers of Heywood's Hayfield, clueless about directions and town names, and an absolute blowhard about his beloved Sanditon. #PemberLittens, I think I'm gonna like it here!

mollyrotondo Loving it so far! Jane Austen humor at its best! 3y
Andrea313 @mollyrotondo Yes, even just the first chapter is so good! Can wait to keep going! ❤️ 3y
nanuska_153 Of course it's a great idea! Half rock half sand... haven't you heard how great is SANDiton?! 3y

#Pemberlittens! Sanditon, at last!

Ch 1 begins with a carriage crash. Mr. & Mrs. Parker are lost in the wrong (surgeon-less) Willingden on their way back to Sanditon, their seaside resort town which is far superior to all other seaside resort towns. Local gentle farmer and seaside resort town hater, Mr. Heywood, comes to the rescue; much gentlemanly banter ensues (Mrs. Parker standing by); disabled carriage & Mr. Parker are carried to the house.

StayCurious I should never like to go to Brinshore! 3y
sprainedbrain This is my first time reading Sanditon and can I just say it makes my heart happy to read Jane‘s work for the first time again. ❤️ 3y

sprainedbrain @StayCurious I mean, apparently it stinks, so I‘m all astonishment that anyone would go there! 😅 (edited) 3y
Deblovestoread Same @sprainedbrain I just was thrilled this morning to be reading her words. 3y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain me too! It‘s such a joy to read something “new”. I‘m really loving how she starts this one off. Two very different men (we don‘t hear a peep out of Mrs Parker) and this introduction of Sanditon, again being displayed from two different perspectives. Parker loved his resort town and Heywood thinks they eat up resources. I‘m excited to see how Jane wanted to develop this further. 3y
Christyco125 So much calamity and banter in the first chapter. And Mrs Parker with no words, it just makes me wonder, is she really dim witted as that makes her seem? Or does she just know her husband doesn‘t have an off button once he gets started so why try to interpose at all? (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain @Kdgordon88 @mollyrotondo I‘m already sad that we aren‘t going to get to read how Jane planned to finish it, but I‘m loving being back in her words. ❤️ 3y
sprainedbrain @Christyco125 calamity is a perfect word for it! And I‘m thinking it‘s the latter… 😂 3y
DebinHawaii I read it once, years ago so it is a pleasure to be back in Jane‘s world and her words! 🤗 3y

The #Pemberlittens Jane Austen work for March/April is Sanditon. This book was not finished before Austen died, so we only have 11 chapters by Jane. I will be reading the edition pictured above, which has the original Austen chapters finished by ‘another lady‘ in the 1970s. This book has 30 chapters, and I will be reading one per day starting 3/1. @StayCurious is also planning daily posts of this edition, so follow her!

TheBookHippie I‘m looking forward to it! I like your copy. Now I have to look at mine better! 😂 3y

sprainedbrain @ravenlee I‘ve not read it, either. I‘m really excited! 3y
Librarybelle Yay! Looking forward to this! 3y
Deblovestoread I am so looking forward to this one as I have not read it yet. I bought a copy that has the finishing chapters, too. 3y
Andrea313 I'm reading this version, too, and am looking forward to the discussions! 3y
jenniferw88 I'm going to be a "traditionalist" here, and just read Jane's chapters. 3y
inthegreensandblues @jenniferw88 I'll be doing the same 😊 3y
TheAromaofBooks I think I'm going to pass on Sanditon since I'm doing the other two books!! 😅 3y
mollyrotondo I‘m definitely in! I have never read it. I‘m ordering the same copy! 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I might get this one because it‘s only 99c on kindle! 😂 I can never seem to find free public domain books on Amazon anymore… I know I could just do Project Gutenberg but then I lose the ability to sync between devices. 3y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly I have the same problem, though I did manage to find a free North and South for my kindle. 3y
MeganAnn I‘ve never read this one either. I found a copy of this edition on book outlet for $6. Looking forward to it! 3y
batsy I'm looking forward to this, as well! Never read it and I have the Oxford edition so will be going down the traditionalist path like @jenniferw88 🙂 3y
katy4peas I‘m in. I think mine only has the original chapters. 3y

52 #PemberLittens have voted, and here are the books selected for March/April!

Sanditon is our Austen work (13 votes). Jane only finished 11+ chapters, but I plan to read the pictured book, finished by ‘another lady.‘ Anyone else?

The Other Bennet Sister (9 votes) is our adaptation of an Austen book. I LOVE this book!

North & South (12 votes) is our other author book. I‘ve been wanting to read this forever, so I‘m excited!

More in comments ⬇️

sprainedbrain My copy of Sanditon finished by another lady has 30 chapters. I‘ve never read it, but I think I will do a chapter per day starting 3/1.

The Other Bennet Sister has a bunch of chapters, so will need a schedule set up for buddy reading.

North & South has 52 chapters, so chapter a day will work for this one unless there are other ideas. ⬇️⬇️
3y
sprainedbrain Please comment if you want to lead discussion on any of the books! I‘m definitely reading Sanditon and North & South and will do daily posts, but this will be my first time for both, so if you‘re an expert and would like to guide us, speak up! I read The Other Bennet Sister in 2020, but will happily reread and can lead if no one else wants to. ⬇️⬇️ (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain Feel free to comment which books, if any, you plan to buddy read, and I will start tag lists for each book. As always, everyone is welcome, and I‘m so thankful for all of you who have voted/participated/hosted/fangirled with us! ❤️ 3y

Crinoline_Laphroaig Read The Other Bennet Sister when it 1st came out and really enjoyed. Not sure if I will reread it but will definitely follow along. Sanditon I've read a couple times. It's so short no problem to join in 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig ^North and South has been awhile. It's a friends favorite so I would like to read it 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig ^ Chapter a Day style. March/April are my busy Spring Planting months so I will join in but not able to lead. *Multiple responses because my keyboard is being wonky. 3y

batsy These are all books I want to read so count me in for all 3! Thank you 💕 3y

quietjenn I'll definitely read Sanditon and maybe The Other Bennet Sister. I read North and South last year, so probably won't revisit so soon. 3y
Andrea313 @StayCurious I hope I have the stamina for it! 😂 3y
ElizaMarie Because of time, and other obligations, I think I am just gonna do the “Other Bennet Sister“ this round :) 3y
ravenlee I‘m in for at least Sanditon and The Other Bennet Sister. I may do North and South but have to find a copy - I forgot I read it on my nook years ago and didn‘t like the omnibus edition enough to tangle with it again! 3y
MicrobeMom Thanks for organizing again @sprainedbrain I would like to read Sanditon and North and South. I have not read either. 3y
MicrobeMom Also I am no expert nor have a read North and South but if you are looking for someone to do a chapter by chapter daily update I will. Keeps me motivated and excited to read. 3y
katy4peas I‘m in for all three! I was hoping they would be spread out a bit as these are all ones I want to read and April is crazy busy, but oh well! Into the Litsy spiral I go! Again!! 🤷‍♀️😂📚📚📚📚📚 3y
MeganAnn Oh boy! @katy4peas same!! 😂 I‘m in for all three. We‘ll see how well I can keep up…. 3y

wordslinger42 I'd love to join in!! North and South has been on my list for awhile 😊 3y
SarahBookInterrupted The other Bennet sister is my favourite spin off book…I love it so much! So, I‘m in! I haven‘t read either of the others. So, looking forward to it. (edited) 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m in for Sanditon! I reread North and South recently so I won‘t read it again, but I‘ll follow along with the posts. 3y
Daisey I hope to fit in North and South, but it may also somewhat depend on how my read of Ulysses is going. Add me to that tag list for now, please. 3y
Christyco125 Can you add me to the tag list for Sandition and The Other Bennet Sister please? 3y
nanuska_153 I'm in for both Sanditon and North and South! I haven't read either, exciting!! Thanks so much for all your hard work @sprainedbrain 3y
janeycanuck Count me in for North and South, please! 3y
peanutnine I'm in for The Other Bennet Sister! 3y
Q84 I'm going to try to get to all three. 3y
jenniferw88 Hi Jenni, just wondering if you have seen that I volunteered to do the buddy read of North & South, and if you wanted me to do it? (It's another one that I studied at uni). 3y
sprainedbrain @jenniferw88 @MicrobeMom @StayCurious For North & South, I think it would be great if Jenny did posts during the readalong with discussion questions, added info, etc. Stacey and Renee, I would love it if both of you do daily posts for it as well! I‘m also planning to post daily and I‘m hoping @Andrea313 will as well. The more the merrier, and I‘m happy to share my tag list for this book with whoever wants it. Email me jenni.d.langford @ gmail.com 3y
sprainedbrain @StayCurious Yes, I‘d love for you to do chapter a day for Sanditon as well. Which copy are you planning to read? Again, I have a tag list if you want me to share via email. For The Other Bennet Sister: that book has 95 chapters, so we will need to come up with a different schedule for it. Do you have suggestions? 3y
Andrea313 @sprainedbrain Happy to post daily, or as close to it as I can manage! I'm excited about this one. ❤️ 3y
StayCurious @sprainedbrain I got the same copy as you with “another lady” - I‘m happy to do chapter a day posts 😊 I will email you for the tag lists. For The Other Bennet Sister, probably easiest to just do 2 chapters a day, that way we finish with plenty of time. 3y
MicrobeMom @sprainedbrain sounds good! Doing the posts helps me to stay engaged! I would love to tag whoever would like a tag! Thanks ♥️ (edited) 3y
CrowCAH Has someone taken the lead for North and South? If not, I can make some posts. I started listening and am around five or so chapters in. ( edited to add, I see @jenniferw88 will be leading us. Please, tag me in posts; thanks!) (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain @CrowCAH you should post too! The more the merrier! 😊 3y
CrowCAH @sprainedbrain okay cool! 3y

Mehso-so

That comical aspect of this time gave me quite a chuckle. The cringe-worthy ideal of capitalizing on people sick with nothing concrete to offer but clean air. The strange competition created between Bath and Sanditon...lol!

Happy Saturday! Watching Masterpiece's Sandition. I know nothing of this story. Nude seabathing? A niece openly badmouthing everyone and plotting to poison her rich aunt? Tight leather pants on the mysterious Sydney character? So risque, Jane! 🤣 Please comment if you have read the book or seen this film. #pemberlittens

SamAnne I haven‘t read this one yet! 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I've read the snippet of the book. Last thing Jane Austen wrote. Basically it's just characters and setup. TV show ran out of Austen original content 30 minutes in. 4y
rubyslippersreads What @Crinoline_Laphroaig said. There is also a TV novelization, but I haven‘t read it. 4y
LitStephanie Thanks for the comments, @Crinoline_Laphroaig and @rubyslippersreads! That explains why it is so naughty. 4y
