Sanditon
Sanditon: Official ITV Tie-In Edition | Kate Riordan
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
A novelisation of ITV's lavish period drama, Sanditon, adapted for television by Emmy and BAFTA-Award winning writer Andrew Davies and based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel. When a chance accident transports Charlotte Heywood to the seaside town of Sanditon, her life changes forever. And when she meets the charming and slightly wild Sidney Parker, she finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of romance, betrayal and changing alliances - nobody in Sanditon is quite as they seem. Discover the world Jane Austen left behind and meet the characters brought to the page by Kate Riordan. Every coastal town has its secrets - but Sanditon has more than most!

Meh. So, I loved the PBS show and wanted to find out what happens next. Didn‘t realize this library copy was pretty much just a novelization of the show‘s script. 🤦🏻‍♀️ No new info here. Skip it and watch the show (or get a different novel version). 😂

While this book does use Jane Austen‘s characters and settings, I don‘t think there‘s really any need to put Austen‘s name on it. Unlike the book finished by ‘Another Lady,‘ this one doesn‘t even have Jane‘s chapters—it‘s more retelling than continuation, and it‘s just based on the tv series. But I digress!

Without considering all of that, I really think this would have been a pick for me until that crappy ending. It‘s full of drama, humor, ⬇️

sprainedbrain scoundrels, scandals, and sexiness, just like any good tv drama should be. I thought it was maybe even a little more of all of that than I‘m used to from Andrew Davies, but again… I was loving it until (see spoiler comment below). It‘s not brilliant writing, and it‘s not AT ALL Austenesque, but that‘s ok. I had fun and now I‘m off to finally binge the series. 😉

sprainedbrain Ok but seriously… Jane Austen always gave us a happy ending, and this, my friends, was some bullshit. Of course I realize it was likely setting up a season 2 of the show sans Theo James, but come on. (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain Also, this was my #BookSpin for April and I do believe this is the earliest I have ever accomplished that. 😂 @TheAromaofBooks 3y

Crinoline_Laphroaig I was wondering if this was like tv show. So now I can skip it. 3y
sprainedbrain @Crinoline_Laphroaig since I watched every single episode of Sanditon that is out (to date) yesterday, I can confidently say that this book is 100% exactly what happens in season 1. 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! You are on the ball this month!!! 3y
mollyrotondo I was very surprised by the ending as well when I watched the tv show. I commend them for doing something different. But I felt sad. Still caught up on season 2 though 😆 I‘ll keep watching because why not? Lol 3y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo I‘m still watching too! 😃 3y

I‘m giving this a So-So because it didn‘t follow Jane Austen‘s formula. I love Jane Austen and read her because I‘m ensured of a happy ending. I think if it wasn‘t a Jane Austen book I would have enjoyed it, even the end. I wonder how Jane would have ended it. I liked the story and rush ahead of the #pemberlittens buddy read to hear the ending and was very disappointed. Jane Austen makes me feel so good at the end of her books; this one didn‘t.

sprainedbrain This is the version the show is based on, right? I‘m thinking of listening to the audio of it when I‘m done with my finished version. 🤪 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @sprainedbrain oh, there is another one. I‘ll try that one next. I just assumed they were the same just different covers because of the show, like they do when a book is turned into a movie. 3y
sprainedbrain @SarahBookInterrupted I think there are a few variations. And I‘m sure I can‘t handle very many of them. 😂 3y
sprainedbrain I just finished it… and I feel the same as you! 😬 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @sprainedbrain right?! That‘s not how Jane would have finished it. 3y
