March Madness: Cinderellas, Superstars, and Champions from the Ncaa Final Four | National Collegiate Athletic Association
32 posts
This year-by-year journey through the history of the Final Four captures the most memorable moments and personalities ever to participate in this great event, as well as chronicling the tournament's rise from humble beginnings to perhaps the most significant spectacle in sports. From unbelievable upsets to record-setting performances to coaching masterpieces, March Madness details 76 years of college basketball's most memorable championship moments, including North Carolina's triple-overtime victory over Wilt Chamberlain's Kansas team in 1957, Texas Western's watershed victory over Kentucky in 1966, the Magic vs. Bird showdown of 1979, and Villanova's stunning upset of Georgetown in 1985. Current through the 201314 NCAA season, the book includes such unforgettable games as Florida's back-to-back wins in 2004 and 2005 and Duke and Kentucky's multiple championships.

March #bookspinbingo board, listed a few books that I need to finish up but indecisive so I left it up to my mood for most spaces. March is also #womenshistorymonth as well as #developmentaldisabilitiesawarenessmonth It‘s also March Madness & ready for some basketball. 2 of our alma maters are in the top 25 (San Diego State & UNC Chapel Hill) but sadly NC State has had a rough season (although the Women‘s team has been great)

Brackets lock tomorrow right before start of games. Don‘t miss out!

To read details go to this post: https://thereadersroom.org/march-madness-2018/
#marchMadnessChallenge

theresidentromantic I tried to read this, but I'm so confused. I don't sports ball. Are the books dependent on the basketball teams? 7y
JenP @theresidentromantic yes. The book‘s final score depends on how well the basketball team does in the tournament. Each book is paired with a team. You don‘t have to know anything about basketball to do well. Last year‘s winner didn‘t follow basketball at all. 7y
JenP @theresidentromantic I can walk you through step by step if you want to play. 7y
See All 7 Comments
JenP @theresidentromantic you could just look at the book bracket and fill that out on paper first based on what you want to read and also thinking about rankings - don‘t pick a #16 rank to beat a number 1. Then when you have your book bracket all set, use the second sheet on the excel to translate your book bracket to basketball teams and that‘s how you fill it out on the CBS site. 7y
theresidentromantic @JenP ok, I think, maybe, I get it. Thank you for explaining it! I'll play with it tomorrow, when I'm more awake. 7y
JenP @theresidentromantic sounds good! Let me know if you need any more help. You have to submit it before noon tomorrow or you will be locked out. Good luck and I‘ll be around tomorrow am if you need help 7y

Next step is to fill out your bracket and submit it BEFORE March 15.

Here are some instructions: https://thereadersroom.org/2018/03/11/brackets-are-now-live-for-march-book-madne...

Please ask me any questions. I recommend printing out an official NCAA bracket then using our book bracket to write in the names of books with each team so you end up with one bracket that has both books and teams on it

#marchmadnesschallenge

JenP Also please ignore the first four games on our bracket. I forgot that the 8 teams battling it out for spots in the bracket aren‘t all for #16 seed. So you can ignore those first 4. I‘ll post which ones make it and they will then all go into our #16 seed spot. No #16 has ever beaten a #1 seed so even if you don‘t know which book will be #16, you should t be picking it anyway 😬 (edited) 7y
BarbaraBB Thank you! 7y
See All 10 Comments
JenP @BarbaraBB it is definitely a lot of steps of prep work so feel free to reach out with questions. If you log in to your cbs account you‘ll now be able to see the basketball teams and if you play around by clicking on a few matchups you‘ll get the hang of what you need to do. Just don‘t hit save until you‘re ready 7y
ReadingRover I gotta sit down and focus some real brain power on this 😂 7y
JenP @ReadingRover yeah, the prep takes a little brain power 😂 but you could just pick based on basketball teams then hope the ones you pick are paired with good books 7y
Hooked_on_books I filled out my bracket earlier and have to admit I went purely by books. Probably a flawed strategy, but I don‘t follow basketball at all, so we‘ll see what happens! 7y
JenP @Hooked_on_books well as long as you didn‘t pick a #16 beating a #1 then I think you might be okay 😊 7y
Peddler410 Since I know nothing about college basketball I‘m not playing. Have fun everyone 🙂 7y
JenP @Peddler410 I‘d say about 75% of our participants don‘t know much about basketball. Last year I picked only based on books I wanted to read 😂 7y

Brackets are live and you can see the books and teams here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19vMN4QxXdMsoBQNJUhEfsuWW1Hd5cV3TW0EadSNh...

Sheet 1 is the book bracket
Sheet 2 is the basketball bracket
Sheet 3 has the partners

You can lay the two versions next to each other to see how they are matched. Tomorrow I will post step by step instructions on the blog. 👇🏼👇🏼

JenP When you fill out your bracket on CBS you will be filling it out with basketball teams only so you may need to know which book is matched with a team. 7y
JenP You can fill out a bracket in several ways: 1)using basketball knowledge to make predictions; 2) making predictions only based on what you want to read; or 3) a combination of the two approaches. (edited) 7y
emilyhaldi Fun!! 👏🏻👏🏻 7y
ReadingRover 🤦🏼‍♀️my only sports knowledge is in hockey and reading. 😂 is reading a sport? What is this basketball you speak of? 😝 7y
JenP @ReadingRover ha ha, well then I‘d just pick based on books you want to read while also being mindful of ranking. Then again i won a basketball pool a few years ago by picking based on what team mascot I thought would win in a fight 😉 7y

Here are all the books I own from the #marchmadnesschallenge bracket. I have also read Hunger and Hate U Give but donated my copies to my LFL. Show us your stacks?

Challenge starts soon and the book bracket is done. Now we are waiting for selection Sunday to see how basketball teams are ranked so we can pair them up.

Want to join? Click here for more info: https://thereadersroom.org/march-madness-2018/

🏀📚🏀📚🏀📚🏀📚🏀📚🏀📚

swishandflick Great stack! 7y
BookwormM Now I have to work out how to do brackets 🤣🤣 7y
JenP @BookwormM 😂. I‘m working on an instruction sheet. And since you‘re probably not familiar with US men‘s basketball, I recommend you just pick based on a combination of what you want to read and rankings — don‘t pick a #16 seed to beat a #1 even if you love the #16 book. 7y
See All 15 Comments
sprainedbrain I‘m going to have to start figuring out some substitutions! Are there not going to be books assigned to the 16 seeds? 7y
JenP @sprainedbrain yes, the winners of the first four games. March 11 they announce all teams. Bottom 8 teams have to play each other to earn number 16 seeds. So each of those spots will be determined by the outcome of those games March 13-14. 7y
JenP @sprainedbrain but those seeds will come from the bottom ranked 8 books 7y
sprainedbrain @JenP got it, thanks! 7y
JenP @sprainedbrain if you look st the bracket those eight books are the ones in the middle at the top of the bracket. When the outcomes are decided, I‘ll add the winners to the brackets 7y
RebelReader I‘m not trying to tell you what to do. I just want you to know a 16 seed has never beaten a 1 seed so it might be best to put the least voted for in the 16 seeds as they will most likely be out in the 1st round. However, there is a 1st time for everything! 🤪 I love #Marchmadness! #BasketballRules #buckethead #MichiganStateSpartans 7y
JenP @RebelReader that is what I‘m doing. The bottom 8 books will battle it out to earn the last spot. If you see the blog post, I tell people not to pick #16 to win. 😂. There are 68 teams so 4 books/teams will be eliminated before March 15 7y
JenP @RebelReader just like NCAA tourney, there will be a “first four” between the bottom 8 books 7y
RebelReader @JenP I love the “first four”. I can‘t wait to see the brackets. Until then I will be choosing my team brackets. (Yes I have more than one and yes I‘m a basketball nerd too, but a book nerd first and foremost.) 😃😃 7y
JenP @RebelReader I usually do a few brackets too although I‘m not a huge basketball person 😂. 7y
emilyhaldi I love March Madness brackets so I just might have to join you!! 7y
JenP @emilyhaldi would love you to join even if you only pick based on basketball teams. Then you can decide if you want to read the corresponding books. 7y

Brackets are done! We used the randomizer to divide all 68 books into 4 “divisions” then we used your votes to rank each of the 4 groups. Books in image are #1 seed.

Basketball teams will be paired w/ books based on their ranking.

8 lowest ranked books will be battling it out to earn a spot in the bracket.

You can see the whole bracket & sign up on our challenge page: https://thereadersroom.org/march-madness-2018/

JenP Anyone is welcome to join to win a great grand prize. Reading starts March 15 but between March 11-15 you will need to do some prep and fill out a bracket. I will walk people though the steps of how to do this over the next week. 7y
JenP And the rankings were really close. The difference between the top ranked book and the bottom was 1 point or less. So even the bottom eight books were pretty highly rated. 7y
Hooked_on_books I‘m looking forward to this! 7y

Any last minute nominations? You could win a $25 gift card to Amazon if your book wins. Nominate a book published in 2017 - march 2018, any genre.

Nominations close tomorrow end of day and then we vote. I still have some open book slots so need a few more nominations (1 nomination per person).

We are using nominations to create a bracket for this reading challenge: https://thereadersroom.org/2018/02/11/bookish-march-madness-challenge/

KellyHunsakerReads I want to play. 7y
JenP @Hunsakermountain okay, what book do you want to nominate? Also read the blog post that I linked to above. There will be multiple steps to the game and you can participant in which ever steps you like. There is one grand prize for those who do the full challenge. 7y
Richryan52 @JenP I‘d like to play and I‘d like to nominate The Stone of Destiny: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure 7y
See All 48 Comments
sprainedbrain When do you think the final list of 68 will be done? I‘m planning my tentative March tbr and I‘m a nerd. 😳 7y
JenP @Richryan52 is this your own book? I‘m not sure that is allowed but let me consult with my co-blogger and I will get back to you. We hadn‘t discussed the possibility of someone nominating their own book. I will get back to you tomorrow 7y
Richryan52 @Jenp it is so feel free to ignore. I just figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. Whatever you decide I still want to play 7y
JenP @sprainedbrain depends on how the voting goes but I‘ll post the list to vote on in the next few days. They won‘t be matched to basketball teams until those are announced 7y
JenP @Richryan52 it‘s a smart idea, the nomination made me smile but let me discuss and I will get back to you. I‘m tempted to let it stand if we have the space in the bracket. Even if we don‘t allow it for this game, I‘ll consider reviewing it for the blog if you like. we have a pretty large following. 7y
KellyHunsakerReads I have only read about 4 2017 books... do I have to nominate? 7y
JenP @Hunsakermountain no but you could win a prize. And I think it‘s better to nominate a book you haven‘t read bc that way you can read it for the challenge. 7y
JenP @Hunsakermountain basically just nominate a 2017 book you want to read. That‘s what I did. 7y
Richryan52 @jenp I‘d love to have you review it and I just finished my next one and will be looking for Advance Reviews if you do that 7y
Richryan52 @JenP in case I‘m bounced I‘d nominate The Alienist 7y
JenP @Richryan52 ok! Will let you know about your book. Sounds interesting. 7y
Richryan52 @JenP Thanks much. The new one is titled The Druid of Death. But I think my first The Vatican Cameos is still my best 7y
JenP @Richryan52 okay, will check it out. BTW: nominations have to be published Jan 2017-March 2018 so alienist doesn‘t count but send me another if you like 7y
KellyHunsakerReads I nominate Sebastian Barry Days Without End 7y
Richryan52 @JenP The Midnight Line 7y
Quasifesto Nomadland 7y
JenP Keep them coming! If we go over, voting will determine the final 68. (edited) 7y
JenP @Betty thanks! 7y
BarbaraBB I don‘t know the concept but it sounds like fun, so i‘d like to give it a try and play! I‘ll nominate The Heart‘s Invisible Furies if it hasn‘t been nominated already?? (edited) 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB already nominated. Try again! Once we have the nominations I‘ll walk people through the game step by step so it should be clear. 7y
BarbaraBB Thought so 😉. I don‘t know if it is strategically smart but I loved 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB that one is free (and I loved it)! 7y
BarbaraBB Of course you did 😀 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB @britt_brooke picked Heart‘s invisible Furies and then at least 4 other people tried to pick it after her so it‘s a good choice. Home Fire is a risky pick but could still do pretty well. Good luck 7y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I played last year, and I knew nothing about basketball at all, but had so much fun still 👍 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I think I will too, it looks a bit like the Tournament of Books and I love that. Are you participating this year as well? 7y
BarbaraBB @JenP Yes I can imagine it is risky - even without knowing the rules of the game 😀 - but never mind, I am looking forward to it #livingontheedge 😂😂 7y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I am! Hopefully, I‘ll do better this time around 😄 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja What book did you nominate? 7y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I nominated Idaho, which I haven‘t read yet, but everyone seems to love it 👍 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I am one of them. Great choice! 7y
JenP @Richryan52 I didn‘t include your book but we‘d be happy to read and review it. 7y
Richryan52 @JenP ok how do we do that? (edited) 7y
JenP @Richryan52 I‘ll buy a copy of the book. I like to support people on Litsy. What is the title of the one you want me to review? 7y
Richryan52 @JenP The Vatican Cameos is my favorite but there is some adult content. If you‘re ok with that, try it. Otherwise The Stone of Destiny 7y

It‘s a reading challenge that you can read about here:

But step 1 is nominating a book. You don‘t have to play in the rest of the challenge (although we‘d like you to). If your book wins, u get a $25 amazon gift card & bragging rights

We are populating our March madness reading challenge brackets (books get paired with basketball teams)!

Want to nominate a book? The winning book earns a $25 Amazon gift card. Books must be first published in the last year (Jan 2017-today).

To nominate your book go here: https://thereadersroom.org/2018/02/11/bookish-march-madness-challenge/

Nominations will help us create brackets for the challenge!

JenP Books can be any genre but think strategically. We will be ranking books and placing them into 4 book divisions where they will be paired with basketball teams. I would recommend you pick a book that you think others would like to read. Obscure books rarely rank highly in the brackets 7y

Here is my tentative reading list, assuming my teams don't get knocked out early! Books with an asterisk indicate a substitution because I either read the book or I'm unable to obtain a copy. I used the library recommendation list for substitute titles. Let me know if you approve choices @JenP Thanks for making the tournament actually fun! #MarchMadness

Reviewsbylola Have fun!! I truly don't know how exactly this works but looks like a good time! 🏀 8y
LitLogophile Oscar Wao is my favorite of these books but Go Gators 😂 8y
JenP Substitutions look great. 8y
Cinfhen Great, thanks @JenP 😀too bad you aren't playing along @Reviewsbylola it probably wouldn't matter if you understood or not...I need to use some strategy for my next read @lostlogophile but I think Oscar Wao would be a good choice moving forward 💕Go Nova! 8y
