Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance | Ruth Emmie Lang
Ruth Emmie Lang teaches us how to find magic in the ordinary in her magical realism debut Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance.
Orphaned, raised by wolves, and the proud owner of a horned pig named Merlin, Weylyn Grey knew he wasnt like other people. But when he single-handedly stopped that tornado on a stormy Christmas day in Oklahoma, he realized just how different he actually was.
As amazing as these powers may appear, they tend to manifest themselves at inopportune times and places, jeopardizing not only his own life, but the life of Mary, the woman he loves.
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance tells the story of Weylyn Greys life from the perspectives of the people who knew him, loved him, and even a few who thought he was just plain weird. Although he doesnt stay in any of their lives for long, he leaves each of them with a story to tell: great storms that evaporate into thin air; fireflies that make phosphorescent honey; a house filled with spider webs and the strange man who inhabits it.
There is one story, however, that Weylyn wishes he could change: his own. But first he has to muster enough courage to knock on Marys front door.

Toke me a long time to finish cause I didn't want it to end. At first I was hesitant towards it, now it's one of my favorite stories! Heartwarming in places I wasn't expecting. It also has one of the states I call home in it and it doesn't get into alot of stories. If you're a reader who likes a lil bit of everything, this has it!

I know I‘m late to the show, but this book! I‘m not even sure what to say about it…it makes me feel the same way that I do when I watch The Neverending Story or read Mrs Frisby & the Rats of NIMH. It‘s something that feels fantastic and modern and yet is cozy and nostalgic, all at the same time. I feel like I will be thinking about this for awhile & likely rereading it again soon.

This is a slowly meandering story of Weylyn Grey, a boy who lost his parents, lived with wolves and is extraordinary in many ways. Weylyn‘s story is told through the people he encounters throughout his life, using a timeline that moves from present to past and back again. This is a sweet read, with truly lovable characters. I think we could all learn something from Weylyn and his childlike honesty and wonder. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

This was a gentle novel with the perfect touch of magic. It follows the life of Weylyn Gray through the eyes of those who cross paths with him over the years. Weylyn is a boy who lives with wolves, a man who can stop tornadoes, someone who leaves a glowing mark wherever he goes even if he doesn't stay long.

It's a slow Sunday at GalaxyCon, so I've got time to read in my booth. I don't know why I waited so long to read this one. Lang is fairly local to my area and I loved her newer book The Wilderwomen. So far this story is charming. I'm especially enjoying how the book manages to tell the story of Wayland by telling the stories of the people around him.

3✨Weylyn lost his parents at a young age and was raised by wolves. He is extraordinary and that is quickly evident from everyone that meets him. I struggled to get into it at first because it reminded me of Jungle Book so wasn‘t something new in my mind. Then I could understand what was happening with the circumstances that happened to him. Finally, the story warmed my heart like a cozy blanket.

I usually like my fiction pure fantasy or pure realism, but this novel convinced me a mix could win me over. I loved the alternating narrators + timeline jumps to flush out the story—the writing held together perfectly. A few times I was worried if/how it could be brought together but the ending was beautifully done. The characters reveal themselves subtly so we feel like we know them—and most importantly, like them. The nature-based magic was A+

BookReport: Best of the week are the tagged book and the two non-fiction books. I enjoyed the Ivey on audio. Both it and Beasts have been on my TBR for years so it feels good to move them off the piles. HMD was ok, it really lagged in the middle.

WeeklyForecast: Of my 4 current books I‘m still not sure about The Promise. I felt seen on the first page of Bittersweet so it might be a winner. Today is all about Basket Case.

Chrissyreadit I totally missed this post! Ahhh! I really want to read The Cold king, but I will add to my TBR….then Illusions of Fate , then In Other Lands. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @BookwormAHN @Chrissyreadi - I'm leaning towards In Other Lands. However, Goodreads says it's 437pgs long (I forgot to check that when I was picking these out)... not sure how accurate that is, but is that longer than we want to read for this round? 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I may end up reading The Cold King this month for the Beauty & the Beast #FairyTaleReadingChallenge ...despite having two other B&B retellings to read 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Littlewolf1 - Right?? These all sound so good!!! I have really enjoyed some of Black's other books, but just haven't gotten around to The Darkest Part of the Woods yet. 3y

This was a book club pick. Maybe my standards are too high for fantasy—a genre I normally don‘t read—but I didn‘t particularly enjoy this. I felt it overall lacked focus and the peripatetic narrative detracted from any deep exploration of themes, or characters. I realize I may be in the minority here, but It felt superficial in the same way I experienced The Night Circus.

For me the mood to read a a pre-1800 book is hard found. What was I thinking. This story is basically told from 1979 - 2017. It was beautiful. I loved Weylyn Grey and the impact he made on the lives of those he touched. Weird, totally different story, but as I finished this I thought of Olive Kitteridge and her impact on lives in her community.

I VERY rarely read fantasy books. I've just never really gotten into the genre. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book very much. But I did. I absolutely loved it. The coming of age story with the mythical elements. I really enjoyed the characters. Telling Weylyn's story through the perspective of those he engaged with suggested that he didn't know himself well enough to tell his story. If one could write a hug, I think it would feel like this book
