4✨ This was a really fun read that was suggested to me by my hubby‘s friend at the beginning of the year. It took me a while to get into it at first. It wasn‘t until he was in a coma that I started to get interested, but then I didn‘t want to put it down. John goes into a coma for 4.5 years and when he comes out of it if he touches someone he sees something about that person. I wish he could have had some sort of happy ending, but it wasn‘t to be.

The first King novel in my chronological read that I hadn‘t read before, and I loved it! Johnny Smith wakes up from a long coma with psychic abilities, and deals with the repercussions of his “gift.” The characters, the plot, and the themes of love, moral obligation, and loss are all so strong, I didn‘t want this to end. Even without supernatural abilities, everyone can relate to Johnny‘s struggle to find meaning in what life has handed him. 5⭐️

One of my favorites from King. One of his best-paced books. Greg Stillson feels intensely real, and some of the parallels here between Stillson‘s rise to power and the current political situation in the US is hair-raising.

Catching up on reviews—I read this for my IRL book club in October. This is the first Stephen King I‘ve read, and I really enjoyed it. Engaging writing, likable main character, super interesting ideas, and more thriller than horror. Although the setting felt a little dated, the political aspects of the plot actually felt very timely! 😬 (My book club watched the 1983 movie together, though—and that definitely DID feel dated 😂)

The first book in my read-through I hadn't yet read, I found The Dead Zone supremely enthralling. While part of it may certainly have been my lack of awareness of where the plot would take me, a much bigger part was certainly my affinity for Johnny. He's one of the more engaging and likeable characters King has written, and it's a dreadful joy observing the man live the best he can while waiting for the Sword of Damocles to inevitably fall. 5/5

Sitting here in my reading nook with a blanket and a candle—it‘s finally feeling like fall here, with cooler evenings and even a little rain this afternoon. I‘m starting this book tonight… my husband‘s pick for our IRL book club this month. It‘s my first Stephen King, so I‘ll see how this goes!

lauraisntwilder You're in a book club with your husband? I would love that! I used to be in one with my mom and I miss it. 2y
BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder I don‘t know how I missed this comment before! Yes, I‘m in a book club with my husband and enjoy it so much! It‘s a lot of fun to read and discuss together with friends… although my husband and I have to be careful not to get carried away and have our whole discussion in advance of the actual book club meeting! 2y

October is … Stephen King Readathon month!! Here are the books I chose for the 19 prompts. I own a lot of unread King!!! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Does anyone else have a horror filled October planned?

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Desperation was the first King book I ever read and is still one of my all-time faves! 😍 Love several of these others as well. I definitely have a horror/spooky themed October TBR. Minus two nonfiction nature-based reads. 😅 2y

I did not love this one like I loved Salem‘s Lot and The Stand, but I‘m still glad I read it. It became more and more boring the further I read.

But I DID love that I was able to spend the first part of my Thanksgiving Day in PJ‘s, snuggling with my husband, both of us reading.

Onto the next book in my #readingStephenKing project: The Mist!! Reading King‘s books in chronological order is a personal challenge for me and I‘m really enjoying it.

Baffled. I read a lot of Stephen King when I was growing up but never got around to this one. Read it recently for a book club and could not believe how boring it was. Not at all clear on the success of this one. King is a great writer but yuck. I really love his short stories and novellas best. Plus The Dark Tower. I should go back and reread that one but oh there‘s so many books, so little time! #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy #klaus

I guess you could say this is my first “true” Stephen King that I‘ve read since my first was the Colorado Kid. I really enjoyed this a lot even though there were some parts that dragged. I‘m definitely looking forward to reading more from the author before I dive into the Dark Tower series.

I am slowly working my way through all of Stephen King‘s writing. While I definitely prefer other books by him, this was still pretty good. It felt like it was a four act play to me. The pacing wasn‘t bad, but it was more four different segments than one major storyline.

There is something about Stephen King‘s writing that just sucks me in. I love his random characters that he brings to life, even if it is just for one small scene.

Stephen King is one of my favorite writers as well as the author I have read the most from. I will be the first to say however, it typically takes me a while to get sucked into his stories, all though once I am in, I am in deep. That was not the case with The Dead Zone. This was a fun exciting read from the first letter to the last punctuation. For anyone thinking about reading a Stephen King book for the first time, this is my recommendation.

Another Halloween listen narrated by the very talented James Franco! I wasn‘t familiar with this one at all before starting but enjoyed the 1970s political angle as well as the characters. King sure makes the villains vile here (that dog scene!!). I listened to it at every opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I wouldn‘t count this as one of his spookier reads. I am curious to check out the screen adaptations now! #AudioColoring

A classic Stephen King book about a man with psychic abilities who shakes hands with a politician claiming to be “just another guy” and gets a flash of the end of the world. I liked this one as a teenager, but was scared of it as an adult. I love King‘s books but sometimes am frustrated when his endings fizzle. Not the case with this one.

August has been a productive reading (and listening - about half were audios) month for me. I enjoyed most of these, with over half of them getting ⭐⭐⭐⭐. My favorites of the month were The Dead Zone (which was superbly narrated by James Franco) and Rapture in Death. The only one that got less than 3 stars for me was Children of Time, which was surprisingly disappointing. I really expected to love it.

TheNeverendingTBR Yea, The Dead Zone was better than I expected ✅ 4y

When I decided to read all SK works in publication order it was purely because I was told this was the easiest way to spot signs of the multiverse and I think I've found my first cross overs! This book directly mentions Salems Lot and Carrie.
I imagine reading this in the early 80's the character of Stillson would have seemed ridiculous but you can definitely see the parallels between him and Trump.

KathyWheeler No — you would think Stillson would‘ve seemed ridiculous in the 80s, but he actually seemed scary to me. I just didn‘t know the book would be prophetic. 😞 (edited) 4y
Susanita One summer I was visiting my dad and bored out of my mind (pre-internet, and I didn't know anyone my age in the tiny neighborhood) so he gave me this book to read. I devoured it. 4y
Mistermandolin I read it in the early 80s and have always rated it. Impressed me at the time and resonates today. Some say it‘s the last of King‘s ‘greats‘ and while I wouldn‘t go that far it‘s certainly up there with his best. Great pick! 4y
Michellesibs @KathyWheeler @Susanita @Mistermandolin I cant stop thinking about it, theres something about Kings work which creeps under your skin and you find yourself thinking about it for weeks after isnt there. 4y

My Saturday afternoon! 😻💕📚

I'm about 100 pages away from the end of this book and it is definitely ranking up there with my other favorite King stories! He is just a master of characterization, which is one of my favorite aspects of his writing and why he's one of my favorite authors! 💕

The resemblance between Stillson/Trump is terrifying! 😨

My second Stephen King novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Johnny Smith is involved in a serious accident and remains in a coma for years. When he wakes up, he has a strange new power to see into people's lives when he touches them. With this comes great pain and responsibility. 🔮
A really fascinating read..the only reason it's 4 stars is there were 100 pages or so in the last third of the book which I felt lacked the same oomph.
