This should be viewed as a quintessential piece of feminist literature due to its early depictions of societal views/stigmas toward women's mental health. In this unforgettably powerful and important story our narrator, a paradoxical woman, gives a first hand look into her daily life living with mental illness. This is definitely one of those narratives that takes time to dissect, evaluate and discuss. I highly recommend you give it a read.
I just couldn't get into her writing. It was like H Rider Haggard - she spent the first 17 pages of a short story setting the scene and it wasn't exactly riveting stuff... it was literally about wallpaper... not for me at all
Book 32
A collection of short stories published in The late 1800's . Notable for feminist themes. There is disparation among the stories. 3.5 ⭐s
Happy day! USPS finally delivered my Christmas present! The Penguin Black Collection with 80 great stories and poems. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Creepy in a way I didn‘t prepare myself for as I decided it was sensible to sit down and read this alone in my home in the middle of the night. I didn‘t think it possible for a written story to evoke fear in me in the same way as a film or a game but this short story absolutely horrified me- and that was before I started unpicking the commentary! A brilliant piece and new personal favourite, I won‘t be forgetting this any time soon.
This story is always so incredible every time I read it. The imagery, the writing craft, the unreliable narrator, the reflection of the time period, the creepiness, the perfect rising action, climax, and resolution in one final page, my goodness it‘s the perfect story! Highly recommend to ANY reader since it‘s so versatile in what a reader can get out of it.
"I suppose I shall have to get back behind the pattern when it comes night, and that is hard!" #SerialApp
Knee surgery yesterday, and now reading at 3am... glad this hospital room doesn‘t have yellow or patterned walls. Might make me feel a little crazy. Read this back in high school lit, but didn‘t remember a thing about it. It‘s okay. Good morning!
Seeing some long distance friends today ! NJ✈️CA with a FOUR HOUR layover in Las Vegas that has me feeling like I should've just paid the extra money for a nonstop lol. But I'm already on my second book for the trip and hoping to finish the 3 I brought for the weekend 🤞
Lovely day to work outside. I'm starting on my paper on "The Yellow Wallpaper" for my American Short Stories class.
Read this for a class on classic American short stories.
It touched me deeply. And it was downright disturbing, too. I'm looking forward to discussing it in class. Hopefully I can get my feelings sorted out til then.
Creepy, haunting...
This short story from a 19th century feminist was a poignant reminder of how misunderstood both women and mental illness have been throughout history.
The Yellow Wallpaper remains one of my favorite short stories, and I am equally disturbed every time I re-read it.
In the midst of moving with her husband, the narrator cannot help but stare at her yellow wallpaper. Something is wrong with this paper and just gets worse with every page.
The color. The smell. And wait... is there a face behind the paper? A woman trying to get out?
Loved the downward spiral into pure insanity. Five stars!
Ok, #ScreamsByMail folks, I have done a bit of research on horror novels written by women and discovered these. Any preference? I realized that (except for the title) Exquisite Corpse may not be a good fit for us. Any must-avoid here? Any preference? This is Part 1 of 2 based on this list: https://www.unboundworlds.com/2018/03/best-horror-novels-women/
Still struggling pretty hard today, but managed to print up a copy of the free Google digitized version of this short story to accompany my #horrorgoespostalbookclub selection, A Head Full of Ghosts. Quite creepy if I may say so! #teamsjaws get ready for it! #hgpbc @Bookishgal71 @Avanders @bookish_wookish
I‘ve enjoyed this little nugget since I read it in AP English in high school #lilnuggiveaway @monalyisha

I reread this title this year and enjoyed it even more the second time reading it.
If you want a #suspensefulSunday I would recommend reading this little book of stories by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Especially the title story made my head spin and had me feeling the suspense for a while after reading it!

Another #serialreader completed today. What a creepy story!! This has been on my TBR list for awhile and it lived up to my expectations. I‘ll never look at wallpaper the same way. 😂
“The Yellow Wallpaper” is the story of cures that were worse than the disease.
""The narrator of the story was a representation of all women in that society, who were trapped by their men. Women in that time period, unfortunately were better seen, not heard." (http://blogs.setonhill.edu/JasonPugh/011211.html)

My plan was to read at least two prompts each quarter for #booked2018. I somehow forgot we could skip around for the prompts, so Furiously Happy was an accident. I didn‘t realize it fit one of the later prompts until today. So, yay! I exceeded my goal! 😂

I read my first serial from the Serial Reader app, and This is my “Y” for #LitsyClassics . I read this ages ago and was so glad to read it again. Great short story. Warning - don‘t look at yellow wallpaper too long!
Read this short story in 1 sitting. It is the story of a woman's descent into madness following the birth of her child and the subsequent enforced rest. She is taken to a country house to recover and spends most of her time confined to a room with horrid yellow wallpaper. The description of the room makes me think what happens to the woman has happened in the past. A creepy, thought provoking read.

This seemed an appropriate read for the day. Wonderful short story. Gothic madness!
1. The Yellow Wall Paper (a short story)
2. 3
3. I usually pronounce it as “ant” when I‘m talking, but when I read it or say it in my head, I pronounce it as “ahnt.”
4. Peanuts
5. ✋🏽✋🏽✋🏽

February wasn‘t exactly an impressive reading month. I only finished one novel and one short story, but at least I enjoyed both of them. 😊
#FebruaryWrapUp #FebruaryStats
Amazon has it with the excellent 1913 explanation. Save the introduction for last. Enjoy the illustrations. I think this one is free.
I know Serial has it but it's missing the intro and the italics.
I had curtains as a child which belonged in the nursery with the yellow wallpaper. Hours spent tracing those lines. Such busy flowers!
I always wanted to write a short about poison green wallpaper.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first five star rating of 2018 goes to this fantastic short story! I highly recommend it.
Two down for Booked 2018 which means I have completed my personal goal for this quarter! 😃 Perhaps I will end up exceeding it... We‘ll see. 😄

This fantastic short story is also on the #1001books list and is in the public domain. A very spooky tale about a woman‘s decent into madness.
Finished this for #booked2018 #feministclassic. For me it's just a so so. I liked the symbolism, but I wish there had been more about what the woman actually wanted. I suppose discussing it with a group would probably help me appreciate this more.
Decided to use this for my #feministclassic for #booked2018. Just finished the first issue on Serial Reader.
I still want to read Bad Feminist but can't purchase it right now which seems to be the only way I will get to read it.
“Oh wow!” That was my expression after reading this account of a woman‘s decent into madness. I certainly did not expect a short story in the public domain to be this captivating.

Hey, I have a great idea! Let's take a woman who is probably suffering from a mental breakdown, put her in the attic, give her no creative outlet, no human contact and treat her like a child! That'll cure her, the silly goose! 🙄🙄🙄What an EXCELLENT book! So quick (14 pages) and an absolute delight! (Comic by Sarah Beaton, which straight up made me choke-laugh) 121/1,001 #1001Books
Out of the three short stories I read this month this one is my absolute favorite. Nothing like a little insanity and horrid wallpaper to make you fall down a sinister rabbit hole. With many symbolic touches to the ideals of feminism this story escalates with each page and by the end has you wondering if you are apart of the yellow wallpaper.

A good fast creepy and disturbing read--just two issues on Serial Reader. I'd been meaning to read it since reading 'The Evening Spider' (the book tagged below) that also featured a 'rest cure' for what was likely postpartum depression that pushed a woman into madness. I'm glad I finally worked it in--Gilman was definitely ahead of her time. 👍📚
A quick and creepy read for this morning!
If you ever want something creepy and short to read, this is definitely the story.
This is a haunting story.
A cautionary tale, if you want, with elements of Gothic suspense the story describes a women's downward spiral to madness brought on by neglect and a forced separation from what she can call hers as her husband ignores her and the problem and her daughter is cared for by someone else.
The story is so well written it becomes timeless considering how some are still being treated this way.
Thanks to #serialreads!
