Pocked this up for $1 at my awsome library bookstore, anxious to begin this morning as it has been on my TBR since publication.

Hard to believe a few hours ago we were huddled in the basement because of a possible tornado. Now I‘m just hanging on the porch with Not-My-Cat and starting in on this book.
This was my book club book of the month. It did provide the catalyst for some good conversations. Hill did a nice job on his debut novel of writing a compelling but in some places open ended story.
Not a straordinary book. A good book.

A college professor finds himself in a tricky spot that leads him to seek out the mother who abandoned him as a child. This sharp social commentary gives a trickle of the current story while telling extensive character backstories. I found the structure a little hard to get into at first, but ultimately I thought it was great.

1. Tagged. I think it was 700-something pages. I really enjoyed it! 📖
2. Sometimes, but when I do decide to dive in, I give myself permission to take my time, reading just a little bit a day, usually a chapter or two. 🕰

I went back & forth w/ this one. There were elements I thought pulled me out of the story (Laura Potsdam) & there were elements I thought could have been beefed up (Henry, Bishop/Bethany, Pwnage). But overall, this is Samuel & Faye‘s story and it‘s a sad, funny, beautiful, tragic one. I‘m glad I stuck with it. January #DoubleBookSpin Quote pictured: “When all you have is the memory of a thing, all you can think about is how the thing is gone.”
I let this sit on my shelf for a long time because it‘s a chunkster, but I‘m glad I finally read it. A great story about the choices we make and they affect others.

I quite enjoyed The Nix. Nathan Hill has used real events of the protests during the 1960s, including that of Alan Ginsberg and his “Om” chanting at Chicago. The characters were really interesting and both Faye & Samuel are well described. Overall definitely a good listen. Full review on my blog, link in bio. www.anushareflects.com
It took me some time to get through this but I am so glad I stuck with it. After finishing this I noticed The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix which was fortuitous; I recommend both book and movie. Some 50 years later we are living through somewhat similar experiences.
Easily among the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The Nix is wildly entertaining - a confection of satire, sci-fi, sentimentalism and witticism. This is a work of genius, this is that rarity in contemporary fiction. This is a novel to dive and immerse yourself in -- "about a son, the mother who left him as a child, and how his search to uncover the secrets of her life leads him to reclaim his own." ??
This book...if it was my patient at work, I would refer to it as “tangential and verbose” but as an audiobook with an AMAZING narrator (Ari Fliakos) I just want to call it a masterpiece. There are several plot lines and several characters, but they connect in a way true to real life. Lots to think about here in regard to the choices we make and the way they affect our lives and relationships.
The narrator is SO good! Lots of chores today, but with the company of this audiobook I‘m not complaining! 🎧
I've gotten super behind on my TBR this year already--for those thinking about grad school while working full time, make sure you know what you're getting into!
I've picked out some titles that have been sitting on my shelf for a while. Not sure if it's time for a small #unhaul to keep my sanity, or if these should stay. All have great reviews (though I think I saw a spoiler for the tagged a little while back).
Any thoughts, fellow Littens? 😁
I started listening to audiobooks three years ago when I gained a commute. This is the best I could narrow down the 371 titles that have joined my #audible library in those years!

And yes, The Nix is the top and absolutely worth 21 hours!!
Day 6 of #adventrecommends ... a favorite from 2019.
Yes. It‘s a chunkster (737 pgs.) It‘s also a smart novel with big ideas that packs a hell of a punch. A sprawling puzzle that goes back and forth in time, it delves into family secrets. It touches on relationships, trust & loyalty with friends, lovers, parents & children. It‘s also a satire of today‘s politics and media with timely observations and insights captured in a clever way.
this is like infinite jest minus the creativity and the worldbuilding and pretty much everything that made infinite jest so powerful except the pretension and the really bad attempt at being like Pynchon. pic related its what girls think when you tell them the plot of this boring novel
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Written about the protest in the late sixties. You see the sides of the police, politics and “hippies.” The main character dives into his mom‘s past who abandoned her family when he was young. The twist and turns are so entertaining. The length intimidated me because I tend to get bored with long books, but it was such a fast read!
I enjoyed this satire on academia, publishing, U.S. politics, gaming etc. It is a little overstuffed maybe but ultimately satisfying. The prompt #sitdown made me think of it because the protagonist‘s mother was photographed at a “sit in” in the 70s which has a lot to do with the plot. Convoluted but it‘s the best I can do.😅 #RedroseSeptember
8-15-19: My 65th finished book of 2019! #thenix #nathanhill I really enjoyed this one! 👍🏼📖#️⃣6️⃣5️⃣
“It‘s because a lighthouse is two-faced, and this is how she feels each time she visits. A lighthouse is both an invitation and a warning. A lighthouse says Welcome home. But next to that, right after that, it also says Danger.”
― Nathan Hill, The Nix

Thank you to @Gaylagal2 for the wonderful package. You made a T-shirt!!!! And so many great books. #summersantagoespostal
21 hours on audio seemed like it might be too long but the whole thing was an absolute delight to listen to. It‘s a sprawling narrative that spans decades. It‘s got plot but mostly it‘s about the characters; family, friendships, secrets, the choices they make that effect each other. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#AprilWrapUp I read a lot of good books this month! Nothing below 3⭐️, I‘ll take it! 😁🎉👍🏻📚 Well on my way to my goal of 180 books this year.
Don‘t forget #StarTrekSummerMay starts tomorrow. 🖖🏻 Looking forward to some interesting interpretations of TNG episodes! 👩🚀
Good Lord is this #audiobook is beautiful! It‘s probably my all-time favorite fiction audiobook, and definitely in my top five favorite books period. I got tingles at the end. @Cinfhen definitely listen to a sample! @8little_paws we were so in sync in 2016 👯♀️ I have All Things Cease to Appear checked out as well! 😊 Yes, this book is a chunkster, but it is sooooo good! 5🌟
Some mandalas and stained glass I colored while listening!
I really liked The Nix by Nate Hill. People are puzzles. If we approach people with curiousity instead of judgment the world would be a much better place. If you look closely, you can see a reflection of me in the book!
Doing some #audiocoloring on my iPad. I had forgotten how enjoyable this is! 😊
"The best way to feel like you really belong to a group is to invent another group to hate." Sebastian, p. 560
One of my favorite #audiobooks, the MC, Samuel, is in what I consider my tiny Gen Y, born between 1978 and 1982. I love when I find books that cover #mygeneration that tightly.
Plus this book has a lot of other generations, too. It‘s one of the few books I can easily say is “deftly woven.” #anglophileapril

Rust & Stardust - new Overdrive ebook
Enjoying them all! Hopefully I can finish all four before my #moodreading comes knocking! 😉😬
Just finished this sprawling, 732-page novel about a man‘s search for the truths about the mother who left him, the girl he loved and lost, the country he lives in —and about himself. I enjoyed it immensely. I know some have criticized it as being stuffed with superfluous or unnecessary characters. But I think the point is to show that we are all connected by random, seemingly insignificant events and people who impact our individual paths.
I can‘t even wrap my brain around how sad, scary and true this is. 🥺
And this is why the Electoral College needs to go.
