The missing. The forgotten. The brave... The women. From master storyteller Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds, comes the story of a turbulent, transformative era in America: the 1960s. The Women is that rarest of novelsat once an intimate portrait of a woman coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided by war and broken by politics, of a generation both fueled by dreams and lost on the battlefield. Women can be heroes, too. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances Frankie McGrath hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different choice for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed and politically divided America. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on the story of all women who put themselves in harms way to help others. Women whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has all too often been forgotten. A novel of searing insight and lyric beauty, The Women is a profoundly emotional, richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose extraordinary idealism and courage under fire define a generation.

Kristin Hannah does it again! One of the best writers of all-time! Such beautiful, exquisite writing that kept me engaged throughout the entirety of the book! The development of Frankie into her confidence and sense of self was realistic and heart-wrenching. The portrayal of the war was descriptive and told necessary realities. Hannah is truly giving an ode to women in the Vietnam War and throughout history who have been forgotten. A must-read!

Can‘t believe this amazing book is almost coming to and end. I feel like I‘ve been on such a roller coaster of emotions with the main character Frankie. I‘ve watched her grow from a naive young woman starting out in the army to a strong woman with supportive best friends. 👩‍⚕️

Wow that sucked. I had to read it for work, but had that not been so, I would have abandoned it after the third chapter. I kept up a hate log just to finish the wretched thing.

1. I feel purpose in being a loving and supportive friend to those I love.

2. I find joy in the quiet moments. A beautiful turn of a phrase, the sunlight peeking through the trees outside my window. A truly delicious meal.

3. My favorite book of August by far was The Women by Kristin Hannah. It was a very emotional read for me with great writing and a fierce depth. Overall incredibly moving.

This is an amazing book about combat nurses in the Vietnam War. The author did a great job explaining the experiences of combat nurses while in the war. And then when men & women came home and how poorly they were treated. Frankie was experiencing ptsd but didn't know it. She went to the VA twice and was turned away. So infuriating! I absolutely love this book.

It was so nice this morning that my husband and I walked outside. I finished The Women. I mostly liked it. It had some issues with anachronisms and with being a little pedantic in places, but I liked the story. I was very glad it didn‘t end the way I thought it was heading, which is what moved it from a so-so to a pick for me. #audiowalk

I wanted to go through my phone and slap Frankie‘s parents; especially her father. Something just happened in the book that I knew was going to happen, and I can‘t decide if I‘m disappointed or not. Since there‘s no outdoor pics because I walked inside and also swam, here‘s one of Little George sleeping with Missy. #audiowalk

While I‘m enjoying the story, I‘m having trouble with some turns of phrase that seem out of place. The use of “girlfriend” in a phrase like, “I understand, girlfriend,” is not something I remember from then. I don‘t remember “represent” being used the way she‘s used it either. When a soldier tells Frankie he‘s from Kentucky, she says something about never being there, and he replies, “Glad to represent.” Outside #audiowalk today! Turtles were out.

Kimzey I agree those sound like anachronistic word uses. I definitely didn‘t hear people talk like that back then. 3mo
KathyWheeler @Kimzey Yeah — it‘s certainly not what I remember, and it jolts me out of the story. 3mo

This one is between a so so and a pan. The good- loved the subject matter and the section set in Vietnam was strong. The feminine perspective was good. I just think it was unrealistic the laundry list of horrible war and post war atrocities plagued Frankie. It was lazy to have it all be her. Give some troubles to a friend- it made it tedious and manipulative lessening what was good. I had hopes but it became too soap opera-y for me.

Love this author. I knew next to nothing about the Vietnam War (thank you US education) and not only learned a lot, but also about a wholly unreported part of the effort. Couldn‘t put it down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️An incredibly intense read! The horrors of Vietnam and how it impacted the men and women who served and the disheartening trip back to heal and be whole again while being unsupported by the country you served. A bright light on the women nurses who sacrifices need to be known!

Ugh. I do not get all the praise for this book. I felt like I was reading a first-time novelist with a bad editor. I was so psyched to read about the Vietnam war from a female perspective, and read so many good reviews, that I thought it had to be a winner. I abandoned it a little more than halfway through. Life‘s too short!

I‘m not a Hannah fan —I only read this because it was a gift. I find her writing to be flat, trite & predictable. And this one followed the same pattern. I found myself anticipating and ticking off each one of the horrible events that could happen to a character living through the Vietnam War-era… yep, they happened to Frankie! A GR reviewer called this “trauma porn.” I can‘t disagree. I‘d rather find a nonfiction account by an Army vet nurse.

dabbe #fanofthepan! 🤩🤩🤩 4mo
Amiable @dabbe Just curious… but why? 🧐 4mo
dabbe @Amiable Because you've just helped me to not want to read this book. Because it reminds me that it's okay not to like every book you read--nor does one even have to finish it. There are too many other wonderful books out there just waiting to be read. I embrace loving a book, but I also embrace a bail or pan. Guess I'm weird that way. 🤷‍♀️ 4mo
See All 9 Comments
Amiable @dabbe That‘s a great explanation! I am also a big fan of the bail. Life is indeed too short to keep plodding along through a book that isn‘t working for you. 4mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit I get that! I haven‘t read this one yet but found the same to be true in her book about the Depression and the Dust Bowl. Every era-appropriate bad thing that could happen to a person happened to the MC. I did enjoy the descriptions of the setting, especially the dust storms. They were one of those natural phenomenons that are so bizarre that it‘s hard to comprehend their reality. 4mo
Amiable @CindyMyLifeIsLit Do you like nonfiction? I highly recommend this book for a great history of the Dust Bowl: 4mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Amiable Thanks for the rec! I will check it out! 4mo
akfreeborn @amiable I completely agree with your comments. If a tragedy could hit this protagonist it did. It‘s as if the author made a list of war trauma, and difficulties of her generation and she addressed all of them through this nurse. 3mo
Amiable @akfreeborn Right? I get that it probably was easier to write a story through the eyes of just one character —but that also seems lazy. I was rolling my eyes way too much throughout this entire book. 3mo

There much better novels about Vietnam. Hannah‘s latest is hampered by a surprising lack of insight, and too much focus on romantic entanglements. The primary strength of the novel is its focus on women who served during that soul-sucking war. It is completely believable that their heroic service is dismissed by everyone, including the VA with the words “there were no women in Vietnam.” Hannah was written some good novels; this isn‘t one of them.

This is my 2nd book by Hannah. I thoroughly enjoy her writing, I find it vividly detailed. It allows me to really see what's written. In this book, she tells the story of Frances “Frankie" McGrath, a young nurse who served in the Army Nurse Corps during Vietnam. I enjoyed that she covered the harsh realities of war, how women were treated, but found it all very empowering & with an even greater appreciation for the women who served in Vietnam.

This was excellent. I loved Julia Whelan‘s narration and the strong bond between Frankie and her best friends. Going in, I didn‘t have much knowledge of what happened during the Vietnam War so it was very interesting to read about how women were treated after serving their country. I have to say, Kristin Hannah is now on my favorite author list.

This book is absolutely beautiful. About Nursing in the Vietnam War and how family and your connections are not always there for you in the ways you need. The connections that you make are those who you least expect. The audible version has wonderful narration.
