I love him him as a storyteller! I know I won‘t be able to put down his book when I start it. The characters each have their own storyline and they come together at different stages of life. You have compassion and even anger for some of them. Too much to unfold in one post, just read his work!

Shamzi I choked at the the ending, it was wonderful!!! 4y

Entertaining read, the story went by fast. The writing wasn‘t the best and the character build up was...annoying and some parts were not necessary. It was just ok to me 🤷🏾‍♀️

I finished this book awhile ago and haven‘t been very active. I am always humbled by how much classic literature I need to catch up on and this story is a great example of that. While reading I kept thinking, even family can be too uncomfortable with any drastic changes in personal lives. Too disown a child because of the way they have transformed just made me sad. I thought of all the ppl who change physically to match how they feel inside 😔

A boy describes his life growing up in Nigeria. Surrounded by his family and African culture, he gives a story about how a madman ruined his family. The turmoils this family goes through are unimaginable. Listening to the strong Nigerian culture and tales keeps you engaged throughout the whole book! Can‘t wait for him to write more!

What a great book to read during a pandemic 😅. I love the way King writes and am very bias to his work. The only problem with long novels is that there isn‘t always a climax, so chapters dragged but that‘s to be expected. I love the life lessons from the older characters and the ongoing dual between “good” and “evil.”

CBee My copy looks exactly the same 😁😂 4y

I was so excited to read this book about the Watts riots in 1965! The personal stories from journalist, business owners and neighborhood locals gave me all the feels. The riots and looting are too similar to the same fight against racism now, 55yrs later. After the first few chapters it was hard to follow the direction of the book and that made slow at times. It‘s a great read to understand why many ppl are upset about racism in America!

I LOVED this book! So happy I took a chance on this new author (to me) and glad I did. The book was hilarious, I never knew an author to write out a scene where everyone took the meaning a different way. I laughed out loud on several occasions. Definitely recommend!

LitHappens I would also highly recommend A Prayer for Owen Meany and Hotel New Hampshire. Irving‘s such an amazing writer!! 5y
BarbaraBB My favorite Irving! I loved Owen and Garp too. 5y
SaniyyahK @LitHappens thank you for the recommendations! Does Owen Meany have anything to do with Meany Hide from Cider House?! 5y
LitHappens @SaniyyahK it‘s been a while since I‘ve read them, so not that I remember. But the characters are just as weird and endearing. 5y

This is only my second book I‘ve read by her and I have loved both of them (Kindred). She is in my top five authors! This story is set in the future (2025, written in 1993) and is so realistic. She always has a strong female lead and the main character is trying to set up a new community with new religious views. The story follows her through her journey of loosing her family and almost everything she loved. Can‘t wait to start the sequel!

Dilara This is one of my favourite books as well!
Heads-up on the sequel, though: it is much darker (but very good as well).

I haven‘t wanted to finish this book because my boyfriend told me there is a sequel when I was 3/4 done! I just want to savor it until I can get my hands on the second one. I know I‘ll just want to continue the story! He did promise me he would order it for me and have it delivered though ❤️. I‘m torn between finishing it and waiting for the other to arrive in the mail OR putting it on hold until the second one arrives 🤷🏾‍♀️. IT IS SO GOOD!

I‘m not a huge fan of history or war themed books and luckily I didn‘t let that get in the way of reading this gem! Greene is one of the best authors I have ever read, every sentence plays a crucial role in the book. It took me a few weeks to read this book, I found myself rereading paragraphs to make sure I got the hidden joke or a piece to the plot. The naive role I have taken on politics will have to change thanks to this read! 😉❤️

I really enjoyed this book. The writing was pretty modern and at times I had to reread a couple sentences. The ending kept me on my toes and up way past my bedtime! Is the sequel worth reading? Didn‘t hear the best reviews about the book. Can someone tell me what happens in like a sentence?😬

BookwormM Basically you learn how Gilead is destroyed. Personally although I rushed out to buy it the sequel didn‘t live up to this one and this one didn‘t need it. It destroys the beauty of not knowing what happens. 5y
SaniyyahK @BookwormM thank you! Yeah I kind of liked how the author left the book open ended. I just kept thinking of the possibilities! ❤️ 5y

I love King as an author and this book did not disappoint! It was gripping from the start where you read about a man who starts a life in a very small town. It then parallels to the lives of the children who reside in “The Institute.” Of course, very well written and captivating. I finished it in five days which is very fast for me, especially for a mighty Stephen King novel!

I have been watching this book on my shelf for about a year now. My friend, who studied yoga in India, bought it for Xmas last year. I loved the humor and personality of the narrator. He‘s writing a letter to the “premier of China” and each chapter is a new letter. I love the style because it‘s fast paced and gripping from the beginning. It displays a great portrait of modern India and makes you think about the hierarchy there. Highly recommend!

I used to love all things Freud and enjoyed reading about his patients. This book completely changed the way I see Freud. It shows his insecurities and how he projected them onto his patients. Describes how fame was so important to him. And in great detail shares his relationships with his wife, colleagues and mentors.

WomanistBibliophile Freud was so unethical! In so many ways! The way he theorised hysteria in particular has done grave harm to women 5y

This book was very interesting. He is writing to you like you‘re an author and damn do I not feel like one now! I never ever thought about writing my own book until I read this one. The biggest advice I got from it is to write what you know and to be honest. No matter what others tell you. I also love his book list at the end. ❤️❤️

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Written about the protest in the late sixties. You see the sides of the police, politics and “hippies.” The main character dives into his mom‘s past who abandoned her family when he was young. The twist and turns are so entertaining. The length intimidated me because I tend to get bored with long books, but it was such a fast read!

This is not one of my favorites by Vonnegut. Maybe I am not in the right frame of mind to read it...? The purpose of some of the characters was lost to me. I will always love his style of writing, it‘s fast and comical. The ending was good and brought the book together nicely. I will probably read it again to try to get a better understanding of the characters.

I hate to say that a Palahniuk book isn‘t a “pick” but I wasn‘t the biggest fan. I did like it and finished it but I‘ve read others that I have liked way more. There were a lot of characters and not enough depth to them so I would often get confused about who was who. It was based in one location and that got kind of boring. I‘m glad I read it but not one of my favorites.
