The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul
The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul | Douglas Adams
Beloved, bumbling Detective Dirk Gently returns in this standalone novelin trade paperback for the first timefrom Douglas Adams, the legendary author of one of the most beloved science fiction novels of all time, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. When a check-in desk at Londons Heathrow Airport disappears in a ball of orange flame, the event is said to be an act of God. But which god? wonders holistic detective Dirk Gently. And how is this connected to Dirks battle with his cleaning lady over his filthy refrigeratoror to the murder of his latest client? Or are these events just another stretch of coincidences in the life of the worlds most off-kilter private investigator? Douglas Adams, one of Englands top exporters of irreverence (Chicago Tribune), continues the implausible adventures of supersleuth Dirk Gently in his quest to solve the mysteries of the universe.

How to narrow the answers to these questions? 🤯🫠
1. Maybe some characters from The Neverending Story by Michael Ende?
Xayíde, Ygramul the Many, Atréyu, Bastian Bathazar Bux, Carl Conrad Coreander, Grograman etc. have maybe had the greatest impact.
Fantasy seems to be the best & neverending source for weird names... 😄
2. The tagged one, among so many other options...

I had a few options here, but when in doubt go with Douglas Adams. I have this as both ragged old paperback and as Kindle edition, but neither of them has this particular cover. I just went with this one because of the way it makes the word #Long stand out. 😄

I'm having book attention issues again (lack of sleep and recharge time will do that). So July was not a great month in that I didn't read a ton and I DNFed at least one book. But I did read a couple of things I had fun with, and I'm going into the new month with 3+ books started, so who knows what will happen? #JulyWrapUp

1. It certainly wasn‘t a phase for me. 😅 I loved ALL mythology as a kid and willingly soaked up any culture‘s mythology that I could research. I‘m still this way.
2. Ugh, that‘s a tough one... Norse mythology would probably win out over the others by just the barest smidge.
3. Tagged my absolute fav!!! ❤️😍❤️ Can‘t go wrong with Douglas Adams!

Finished all the available Hitchhiker's Guide books available on Libby, and decided to move onto Dirk Gently. Unfortunately, only the second one is available and I haven't read the first.

I was excited to know it's read by the author. It occurred to me that I have never heard his voice. Adam's has a really good speaking voice, but for whatever reason I'm still unable to focus on the story. Might have to give another audiobook a try.

So I always have my TBR each month, but I also have a secret backup TBR, in case I finish all the books I was planning to read... this is the backup #MayTBR, but I'm thinking of switching the two lists this time! These seem a bit more comfort-read looking than what I originally planned...

This book was all over the place in the best possible way. I'm a little sad there aren't more of these. I will probably never look at a Coke machine in quite the same way.

Also, I think JK Rowling must be a Douglas Adams fan. The scene on the train platform took that opinion to the next level.

This book is as weird as it's title. I realized Dirk Gently didn't have much to do here but that's his whole thing right!! he is a holistic detective after all.
This book is uncanny and inexplicable at times but is a fun read. Go for this if you like fantasy mixed with science fiction!!

Adam‘s has one of my favorite conversational voices. Especially made entertaining by the fact every time I read “Thor” I see Chris Hemsworth. Adam‘s ability to convey the setting in quick, precise, character influenced sentences has always been perfect. I especially loved the addition of the female protagonist in this novel. 5 out of 5 on GR. I wish there had been more Dirk Gently.

#agameoffavorites day 5, while I do enjoy poetry and have favorite poets, I gotta go with sci-fi! Douglas Adams has been one of my favorites since I was 17-18. I adore Hitchhiker's Guide. But nothing can upset Tea Time as my favorite Adam's book. I know it's not as sci-fi-ish, but it is still classified as such. His favorite book, I can't find; but his favorite author was PG Wodehouse. He's an unread on my tbr pile.

@ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

jmofo I love Tea Time! It has it all, sci fi, fantasy, and jokes! I‘m gonna have to pick another author! 🤘😬 6y

Kid 1: “Hey, mom, what are you reading?”
Me: “It‘s called The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.”
Kid 1: “But why aren‘t you reading your buddy reads?”
Kid 2: “Yeah, don‘t you have those two big books as buddy reads?”
Me: ...

The moral of the story is: don‘t tell your kids when you‘re doing a buddy read.

saresmoore Meanwhile, Dad‘s been studying pretty much non-stop for an upcoming certification, muttering to himself & staring at his laptop for the past two weeks. Yet he gets no shade? Uh, double standard! 7y

saresmoore @Riveted_Reader_Melissa You are absolutely right! They are always spewing my own wisdom right back at me. 😆 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @saresmoore It stinks I know, but at least you know you taught them well. Maybe answer them back that you will finish this one by x day and then will start your buddy read...as in you have a plan and schedule and didn‘t forget your ‘homework‘😂. Dad‘s probably getting a pass because he‘s studying hard. Kids are just too smart sometimes, you try to teach them well and then they use it against you. 7y

saresmoore @vivastory Every day. Kids are the worst. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @saresmoore In all honesty, it doesn‘t hurt to be honest with your kids, that even adults struggle with planning. It‘s important to know your limits, not commit to too many extracurricular activities (buddy reads), but it‘s still important to try to meet your obligations and plan time for important things before deadlines. It never hurts to show them that all humans struggle with the same things and use the same ways to cope and plan better.😉 7y
saresmoore @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Amen! I have a pretty serious perfectionist streak, too, so seeing me be particularly human is always helpful. 7y
