Clare-Dragonfly Everyone is awful in this chapter! Why on earth didn‘t the nurse try harder to convince her she didn‘t want a mirror? “You don‘t look very pretty” is a huge understatement. Or the nurse could have held the mirror herself. But also, the old nurse who told her seven years‘ bad luck is making things worse if anything. 🙄 1w

The best thing, though, about 1st-person POV (IMHO) is how much we get to know the character who's telling her story, and if we care about her (which I think we all do), we really become involved in her story and wanting to see her survive. Usually one runs across dramatic irony in dramas, but Stoker is exemplary at this technigue since the very beginning. We know exactly what\'s going on, but the characters take forever to get a clue. 5mo

Kerr continues to be the effing worst. She deliberately tantalized Sydney and then tried to lure her back. Sydney went to a dark place but I\'m glad she has learned better now. Only two chapters left, perhaps she\'s safe? 😬 5mo

mcctrish Kerr is the worst @willaful and if the worst thing that happens is Sydney sees the light of her rushed marriage almost colliding with a logging truck #couldbeworse 5mo

IndoorDame When it says Faith switched to the informal you with Ruth and she didn‘t notice at first… is the implication supposed to be that Faith lost respect for her when she found out about the pregnancy, or that she‘s trying to make the fiction of their distant “family connection” convincing since they gave her a family name and now their reputations are on the line too? 7mo

Ruthiella I think also that Sally is protecting her naive employers. She‘s saying, “if I can see through this ruse, so will others. Let‘s make it work”. 7mo

Love how she's portrayed as "old..." she's 20. ?

Times sure were different back then. Between reading this and Clan of the Cave Bear, I'm pretty damn grateful to be around in this day and age and not when it was normal for 11-13 year olds to have children/get married. #yikes
Also, guy calling her "old" looks to be in his 70s, which makes absolutely no sense ?

Side note: the artwork is absolutely stunning.
