mcctrish What the fuck happened to Esther ?! She took pills but now she looks like she‘s been in a car accident? They shaved her head? #oneflewoverthecuckoosnest for real! The pendulum has swung completely in the other direction and we just let people self medicate with their poison of choice and give them no care at all 🥲💔 1w

Bookwormjillk I wish the entire #hashtagbrigade could get in a car and go rescue Esther. 1w
Ruthiella @mcctrish I think the bruises are from the botched electro-shock therapy. (edited) 1w
ElizaMarie #AMirrorReally !? I love how she mentions she knows perfectly well you don‘t serve #BeansWithBeans 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Everyone is awful in this chapter! Why on earth didn‘t the nurse try harder to convince her she didn‘t want a mirror? “You don‘t look very pretty” is a huge understatement. Or the nurse could have held the mirror herself. But also, the old nurse who told her seven years‘ bad luck is making things worse if anything. 🙄 1w
Clare-Dragonfly And the racism makes my skin crawl ☹️ 1w
CogsOfEncouragement So much to take in and attempt to decipher. The beans remark was too funny. The food being gross but Esther finally eating again. There is probably some symbolism there too. 1w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly soooooo bad, I‘m not a fan 1w
willaful Esther is such an unreliable narrator, I have no idea whether people are actually as awful as she thinks they are or not. 1w
BarkingMadRead @willaful I wonder the same, this is all seen through her very unreliable eyes 1w
dabbe @mcctrish 🎯! 1w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead @willaful Excellent reminder of the #1 problem with 1st-person POV. The narrator will always be unreliable. The best thing, though, about 1st-person POV (IMHO) is how much we get to know the character who's telling her story, and if we care about her (which I think we all do), we really become involved in her story and wanting to see her survive. We're behind you, Esther! ❣️ 1w
tpixie @dabbe well said! Love all the comments! 2d

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish it really does 🤣 2w
willaful Man, what a depressing chapter. I hope Esther is going to get some help but I kind of doubt it. :-\ 2w
BarkingMadRead @willaful I‘m worried that she will think she doesn‘t need it 2w
Deblovestoread Mrs. Kravitz! 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @BarkingMadRead Same! Or that the shrink will be terrible… 2w
Bookwormjillk I‘m with you all hoping she gets the help she needs. 2w
tpixie @Deblovestoread 😝 @BarkingMadRead Mrs Kravitz!!! 🧙 I LOVED Bewitched 2w
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I think it's almost guaranteed that the shrink will be terrible. 😞 2w
Deblovestoread I loved Bewitched, too! @tpixie I was glad the family doc didn‘t just throw more pills at her. Hopefully her referral is a good one! 2w
dabbe Esther has never had anything below an “A“ in her life. She wins contests, too. Not getting into the summer class was her complete undoing. I'm almost scared now to read more.

BTW, do they live in a house in Boston? If so, why do the mom and Esther share the same bedroom? Or am I wrong in that assumption?
2w
TheAromaofBooks Waaaaaayy too casual about eating raw hamburger + raw egg 😂 2w
ElizaMarie Buddy !!! #RunForYourLifeNurse !! Hopefully he doesn't seduce that poor nurse who he “falls in love“ with. I mean. poor girl to be sucked into him! I am #proud Ester put her foot down with that one! 2w
julieclair @mcctrish Maybe the Lark Rose vibe was why Esther got on my last nerve in this chapter! 😂. But then I reached the end of the chapter and felt guilty about her getting on my nerves. She does need someone who can help her. I do hope the psychiatrist turns out to be a good one. But I'm fearful 2w

willaful An old saying of my husband's father, “teenage boys should be put in a barrel and fed through the bunghole, and at 18 you either let them out or close up the bunghole.“ Might not have been a terrible joke if he hadn't actually treated his sons with such disdain. 🤬

I have some sympathy with Laura's mom... the “fear of falling“ must have been really strong in her position. But people who love babies so much are annoying! 😂
1mo
mcctrish Just no one serve me lamb‘s tail pie and I‘d rather books than babies any day (edited) 1mo
Bookwormjillk @willaful I have sympathy for her mom too- but maybe because I have two teenagers in the house. It‘s hard to let‘s our dreams for our kids go. On the other had she‘s kind of mean. I hope I don‘t sound that way 😂 1mo

mcctrish @Bookwormjillk it can‘t be good 🤣 1mo

KAO I‘ve enjoyed these past two chapters! I think that all of the previous details about life in this hamlet enhance my appreciation for the difficulties and hard-won delights of this time period—and I can‘t help but wonder how readers 80+ years from now will read about life in the 2020s with no small amount of amusement! 1mo
BarbaraJean @mcctrish @willaful @Bookwormjillk @dabbe I came here for the hen‘s backside discussion 😂 1mo

BarkingMadRead @willaful I think so? The only other thing I can think of would be one of these heating pans for cold nights 2mo
Bookwormjillk @willaful @BarkingMadRead I was wondering too but was afraid to google 2mo

mcctrish Sigh. Sob. You must go. Wait, listen to this. Sigh. Sob. Don‘t ever forget me. You must forget me. Sigh. Sob. #putafeatherinhishatandcallhimmacaroni 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely saw Marconi forbidding the marriage coming! There is a lot of sighing and fainting in this chapter. There is no way I would be slogging through this book without the #hashtagbrigade! I *will* learn what Catherine Morland gets so excited about! (edited) 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly I just realized I got his name wrong in a completely different way 😂 Montoni! 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Also! Doesn‘t Valancourt have a first name? He calls Emily by her name all the time but she doesn‘t use his name in dialogue. Did Radcliffe just not feel like coming up with a first name? 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think they‘ve mentioned a first name? I‘m not sure! 4mo
dabbe This is the perfect kind of book for me right now. No matter how bad things are or seem to be today, I am quite grateful to not be Emily in the late 1500's with absolutely no money and no say in what she can/can't do in her life. #yikes #andyesshecrieswaytoomuch #scmb 4mo

mcctrish @Bookwormjillk that sleep walking is taking her straight to a vampire #shesbeenbedazzled why else would she get dressed up ? #vampiresonar 5mo
TheAromaofBooks All the sailors getting picked off! 😨 5mo
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks Dracula couldn‘t make that long voyage without snacks. 🤣 (edited) 5mo
dabbe The suspense for me is always the idea that Mina has no idea what\'s going on (even though she records the ship\'s information), but we do! Usually one runs across dramatic irony in dramas, but Stoker is exemplary at this technigue since the very beginning. We know exactly what\'s going on, but the characters take forever to get a clue. 5mo
CatLass007 Finally, Tim Curry‘s narration begins! 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - I mean, I can\'t exactly blame him. I do love me some travel snacks 😂 5mo

willaful I was expecting something horrible. I guess Sydney was too.

Kerr continues to be the effing worst. She deliberately tantalized Sydney and then tried to lure her back. Sydney went to a dark place but I\'m glad she has learned better now. Only two chapters left, perhaps she\'s safe? 😬
5mo
mcctrish Kerr is the worst @willaful and if the worst thing that happens is Sydney sees the light of her rushed marriage almost colliding with a logging truck #couldbeworse 5mo
willaful @mcctrish Yes, I think it was the right decision. But I hate the thought of Kerr feeling like she won. 🤬 5mo
peanutnine Calling it off was the right decision but I do feel bad for Milton. He seems like collateral damage in the whole affair 5mo
julieclair Sydney is a hot mess. Calling off the engagement is definitely the right idea. @peanutnine I agree about Milton… I feel very sorry for him. 5mo

Cuilin Does anybody else feel like in order to make this more palatable to a Victorian reader Ruth had to be punished in some way? Hence the hair being cut, almost like she‘s in prison???? 7mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin I think you‘re right 7mo
See All 18 Comments
IndoorDame When it says Faith switched to the informal you with Ruth and she didn‘t notice at first… is the implication supposed to be that Faith lost respect for her when she found out about the pregnancy, or that she‘s trying to make the fiction of their distant “family connection” convincing since they gave her a family name and now their reputations are on the line too? 7mo
Ruthiella I think also that Sally is protecting her naive employers. She‘s saying, “if I can see through this ruse, so will others. Let‘s make it work”. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin YES!!!! This exactly. 7mo
AllDebooks @Cuilin absolutely. 7mo
AllDebooks I have read a lot of Victorian fiction and history and never heard of widows cutting their hair. I went down a Google rabbit hole and found this quite interesting 🤔 https://journalofantiques.com/features/the-evolution-of-mourning-wear/ 7mo
currentlyreadinginCO I felt that, too, and how the punishment failing to shame Ruth changed Sally's desire to punish her in the first place @Ruthiella 7mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Agree 💯. 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was skeptical that Sally dropping him could have caused his “deformity” but I searched Wikipedia for “hunchback” and it *can* be caused by trauma! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly @IndoorDame I read it as Sally using the formal “you” with her employers—the Bensons, not Ruth—when they arrived, but as she got comfortable again, switched to the informal “thou” she is used to. I don‘t think she switched pronouns with Ruth. 7mo
IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly oh, makes sense. Thanks 7mo
mcctrish “Men on the other hand weren‘t expected to follow the rigid mourning rules” @AllDebooks the world really hates women! Imagine if we didn‘t just want equality and autonomy and decided to get even 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly @AllDebooks Fascinating, thanks for sharing! I‘d heard of deep mourning and half-mourning but somehow I‘d missed the existence of second mourning! 7mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly Interesting... I was skeptical too. 7mo
willaful @Ruthiella Also a good point. 7mo

Love how she's portrayed as "old..." she's 20. ?

Times sure were different back then. Between reading this and Clan of the Cave Bear, I'm pretty damn grateful to be around in this day and age and not when it was normal for 11-13 year olds to have children/get married. #yikes
Also, guy calling her "old" looks to be in his 70s, which makes absolutely no sense ?

Side note: the artwork is absolutely stunning.
