Cuilin Does anybody else feel like in order to make this more palatable to a Victorian reader Ruth had to be punished in some way? Hence the hair being cut, almost like she‘s in prison???? 4mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin I think you‘re right 4mo

IndoorDame When it says Faith switched to the informal you with Ruth and she didn‘t notice at first… is the implication supposed to be that Faith lost respect for her when she found out about the pregnancy, or that she‘s trying to make the fiction of their distant “family connection” convincing since they gave her a family name and now their reputations are on the line too? 4mo
Ruthiella I think also that Sally is protecting her naive employers. She‘s saying, “if I can see through this ruse, so will others. Let‘s make it work”. 4mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin YES!!!! This exactly. 4mo
AllDebooks @Cuilin absolutely. 4mo
AllDebooks I have read a lot of Victorian fiction and history and never heard of widows cutting their hair. I went down a Google rabbit hole and found this quite interesting 🤔 https://journalofantiques.com/features/the-evolution-of-mourning-wear/ 4mo
currentlyreadinginCO I felt that, too, and how the punishment failing to shame Ruth changed Sally's desire to punish her in the first place @Ruthiella 4mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Agree 💯. 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was skeptical that Sally dropping him could have caused his “deformity” but I searched Wikipedia for “hunchback” and it *can* be caused by trauma! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly @IndoorDame I read it as Sally using the formal “you” with her employers—the Bensons, not Ruth—when they arrived, but as she got comfortable again, switched to the informal “thou” she is used to. I don‘t think she switched pronouns with Ruth. 4mo
IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly oh, makes sense. Thanks 4mo
mcctrish “Men on the other hand weren‘t expected to follow the rigid mourning rules” @AllDebooks the world really hates women! Imagine if we didn‘t just want equality and autonomy and decided to get even 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly @AllDebooks Fascinating, thanks for sharing! I‘d heard of deep mourning and half-mourning but somehow I‘d missed the existence of second mourning! 4mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly Interesting... I was skeptical too. 4mo
willaful @Ruthiella Also a good point. 4mo
julieclair Such an interesting article, @AllDebooks ! Thanks for sharing. 4mo

Cuilin Rules of evidence and questioning seem a bit hazy. Yes I caught up. 10mo

BarkingMadRead @Cuilin I knew you could do it! 10mo
Bookwormjillk And that's why you shouldn't go around telling people you want to commit crimes. 10mo
dabbe The irony is he's actually answering the questions truthfully! Dostoyevsky took 700+ pages to lay out a murder scene where guilt seems to be EVERYWHERE for Dmitry, but we know he didn't do it. I think. #cuzthisstoryisconfusing 10mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe so true! I‘m pretty sure he didn‘t do it, but not 💯 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - I feel like he didn't do it because Dmitry has NO chill and does not seem to grasp the concept of subtlety 😂 I feel like if he did it, he would have announced it as soon as he walked into the party! 10mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Totally agree! I guess I doubt myself because I read a chapter ahead, and when I see the post for that day, I usually have this face: 😳 because I can't remember reading what is posted, and I just read it the day before! 😂 10mo
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks that‘s what I think too but then I wonder what if he doesn‘t know he did it? 10mo
mcctrish @dabbe for that reason I read and then come to see the post even if I‘m late to the party 10mo
mcctrish I laughed out loud at the public prosecutor saying “This is going to turn into complete mayhem…” WHERE have you been?! It‘s been mayhem since Book XIII at least 10mo
dabbe @mcctrish I think I need to try that approach! 🤩 10mo
dabbe @mcctrish He's extremely late to the party! 😂 10mo
Ruthiella I love how Dmitry thinks because he‘s a gentleman and he SAYS he didn‘t kill anyone, that he‘s not getting a one way ticket to Siberia. (edited) 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I know 🤣 he‘s like, I‘m telling the truth, so you have to believe me, because that‘s how it works 🤣🤣 10mo
Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead Well, in his defense, he‘s never seen Law and Order or anything like that. 😜 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I can totally see that, too. “I didn't think bopping him on the head with a big rock would KILL him!“ 😂 10mo

5feet.of.fury 1 paragraph that was 3.5 pages long. And that‘s all I got out of it, Ivan wrote a poem lol 11mo

BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury it was a little mind numbing 11mo
Cuilin Just realized I put my comment on the wrong post. 🤦‍♀️ seriously all that talk of cruelty to children. I don‘t know how Alyosha eat his soup and preserves. 11mo
AllDebooks @5feet.of.fury 😅🤣 11mo
SamAnne That chapter was just too much…. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks Like I kind of got that Ivan was trying to prove that God doesn't really exist because suffering does, particularly the suffering of innocents. But I also felt like he was definitely ignoring/glossing over some critical pro-faith arguments while pretending like he was addressing them. 11mo
mcctrish Shut. Up. Ivan. #ivanhasastupidexpressiononhisface @Cuilin exactly! Aloysha finally gets to sit down and eat something and fucking Ivan goes off on child abuse 11mo
Bookwormjillk That was dark you guys 11mo
currentlyreadinginCO This poem is going to be something 😂 11mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 11mo
Aimeesue Ursula K. Le Guin based a story on one of the ideas Ivan tosses out in this chapter - "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas." (edited) 11mo
