currentlyreadinginCO The problem w this book is that no one calls anyone by their name and I always have to reread everything to find out what happened! It took me a couple rereads to understand who was locked out and where everyone was at the end of this chapter 😂😂. But despite my constant complaining I'm actually really enjoying this and don't think I would have gotten this far w.o the buddy read, SO 9mo

TheAromaofBooks Like I kind of got that Ivan was trying to prove that God doesn't really exist because suffering does, particularly the suffering of innocents. But I also felt like he was definitely ignoring/glossing over some critical pro-faith arguments while pretending like he was addressing them. 10mo

I understood her having this sort of internal/spiritual shake up, but it seemed a little bizarre that hearing some echoing voices was enough to make her reject all of her religious beliefs and descend into complete apathy!? I felt so bad for her - she didn't have anyone to talk it out with, to offer her reassurances or alternate views. 😕 14mo

dabbe @TheAromaofBooks This has been a strange book for me on the whole: I mean, what was even the point of having her in the book and then killing her offstage? And what the heck is the big deal about an echo? Caves echo; get used to it, people.

The wording has been bizarre in places, too, plus how people talk to each other. But, maybe that's the point. We're supposed to feel weird because they feel weird relating to one another. 🤷‍♀️ 14mo

TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - This book has done a great job capturing a general sense of unease and uncertainty, the fragility of a system that assumes everyone “knows their place“ and can't handle anyone deciding they don't like that place. But as a story... it's been somewhat lacking for me 😂 14mo
