Animal Dreams
Animal Dreams | Barbara Kingsolver
"Animals dream about the things they do in the day time just like people do. If you want sweet dreams, you've got to live a sweet life." So says Loyd Peregrina, a handsome Apache trainman and latter-day philosopher. But when Codi Noline returns to her hometown, Loyd's advice is painfully out of her reach. Dreamless and at the end of her rope, Codi comes back to Grace, Arizona to confront her past and face her ailing, distant father. What the finds is a town threatened by a silent environmental catastrophe, some startling clues to her own identity, and a man whose view of the world could change the course of her life. Blending flashbacks, dreams, and Native American legends, Animal Dreams is a suspenseful love story and a moving exploration of life's largest commitments. With this work, the acclaimed author of The Bean Trees and Homeland and Other Stories sustains her familiar voice while giving readers her most remarkable book yet.

Codi returns to Grace, her hometown in Arizona, because her father is struggling with Alzheimer‘s.She falls in love with her first lover Loyd,a Native American man.Codi‘s backstory&Loyd‘s character are well written&there are some beautiful scenes but there is too much going on:environmental issues, the Nicaraguan revolution,Native American culture&overall it reads a bit like a romance novel.I loved that it‘s set in the Southwest.Soft pick

I‘ve been reading by the fire all day as the ice comes down and I try to get well enough to return to work. A little dated politically but still applicable to today, Kingsolver weaves a good story around environmental issues, family, and a sense of home. Trigger warning for animal cruelty (but keep reading, there‘s redemption and powerful symbolism.) #authoramonth @Soubhiville

While I didn‘t love this Kingsolver as much as The Lacuna, it was still an interesting book and showed off Kingsolver‘s early writing style. There were some points in the story where I found myself missing that the timeline had switched from past to present and vice versa, but otherwise and interesting story. #AuthorAMonth

This plot was wispy and unsatisfying. You can see hints of the writing style that made the author's later novel, The Poisonwood Bible, so good. However, the characters have little depth and don't seem to satisfactorily inhabit what, to me, is Kingsolver's great strength: her vivid backdrops. Her nature writing is gorgeous, describing the granite canyons, mountains and railroad towns of northeastern Arizona and northern New Mexico.

#12booksof2020 days 6 & 7 @Andrew65
At the time, I rated The House of the Spirits 4/5 stars, but I‘m including it because it has really stuck with me. It made me think about governments, our beliefs, and mistakes. Both these books are slow-paced and have themes of family. Both amazing writers.

Andrew65 Great authors. 4y

I feel like I forgot how much I ❤️ Barbara Kingsolver‘s books, & then I remembered while reading this one. I‘m glad I read it after seeing Arizona (last summer). A story of a family—a sister trying to find a purpose & a home, her other sister trying to help in another country, & their father who is ill. Kingsolver always brings nature & conservation into her stories.
This gives me a #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks
Using for #readtheUSA2020

TheAromaofBooks Yay bingo!!! I haven't been to Arizona yet, but really want to take a trip to there & Utah, maybe next summer! 4y
Scochrane26 I went to the Sedona area, it‘s so beautiful. I think Ky is beautiful (where I live), but the landscape is so different in AZ. Kingsolver obv feels the same because she has lived both places. 4y

Another beautiful novel by Barbara Kingsolver. She does not disappoint. Her novels always touch on the indigenous culture of the area she's writing about and they always contain a strong element of nature. Both are thumbs up for me.

Animal #Dreams was my first Barbara Kingsolver many years ago. Poisonwood Bible is still my favorite, but I loved them all. Hubs & I lucky to pass through Meadowview, VA last week and ate at her farm-to-table Harvest Table Restaurant. He had this lamb sausage pizza & mushroom soup. I had local trout with Carolina Gold rice & greens. All so yum! #dinnerandabook #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

I went through a BK obsession during my 20s, and I think Animal Dreams may be my fave. The story is framed by her little Arizona town's All Soul's Day celebration (with a Day of the Dead chapter in the middle). You can also tell the period of my life I read certain books because I frequented this certain Chinese restaurant on my lunch break and would tape the fortunes to the inside cover. 😂😂 #AllHallowsRead
