My Killer Vacation
My Killer Vacation | Tessa Bailey
An all-new, spicy murder mystery from Tessa Bailey, New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Summer... It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in sweet, sunny Cape Cod-just me and my beloved brother-but discovering a corpse in our rental house really throws a wrench into our tanning schedule. Now a rude, crude bounty hunter has arrived on the back of his motorcycle to catch the killer and refuses to believe I can be helpful, despite countless hours of true crime podcast listening. Not to mention a fulfilling teaching career of wrangling second graders. A brash bounty hunter and an energetic elementary schoolteacher: the murder-solving team no one asked for, but thanks to these pesky attempts on my life, we're stuck together, come hell or high tide. I'm just here to do a job, not babysit an amateur sleuth. Although...it is becoming less and less of a hardship to have her around. Sure, she's stubborn, distracting and can't stay out of harm's way. She's also brave and beautiful and reminds me of the home I left behind three years ago. In other words, the insatiable hunger and protectiveness she is waking up in me is a threat to my peace of mind. Before I sink any deeper into this dangerous attraction, I need to solve this murder and get back on the road. But will fate take her from me before I realize the road has been leading to her all along?

Brother and sister - Jude and Taylor, discover a dead body when they arrive at their holiday rental. A bounty hunter (Myles) arrives to catch the killer as a favour for a friend. A grumpy and sunshine story line - a kind, caring primary teacher and a rough around the edges bounty hunter. What could go wrong? Taylor and Myles become a murder solving team. Great chemistry with these two MCs and the writing keeps you guessing!

I apologize that I haven‘t been posting very consistently on here. But I wanted to pop in for an update. I did get to visit the Libros Book Lounge I posted about previously for the first time tonight and it was lovely. I wish I had gotten more photos to share, but the thing is… I‘m awkward and self conscious 😂 I loved it and I will be back. 🖤📖🦇

MatchlessMarie Their IG page has more photos @ libros_sa 9mo
Ruthiella Sounds neat. Was it conducive to reading? 9mo
TheBookgeekFrau I just gave them a follow on ig - looks like a cool place!! 9mo
MatchlessMarie @Ruthiella I think so. There is music but it‘s not distractingly loud. The layout is not like an actual bar/lounge. It‘s literally a house that was converted. The backyard has picnic tables and there are several rooms that have different reading arrangements. So you can move to a more secluded spot if needed. But they do also offer wifi/board games/movies in a certain room. It‘s dim to match the vibe but there are reading lamps throughout. 9mo

I wanted to like this, really, I did. But Myles was just so douchy. I‘m not opposed to whirlwind, instalove, but this just didn‘t do it for me. Which is a bummer because the mystery part was interesting (and could have been more featured imo).

Super fun & also super hot, with some great one-liners. My favorite was the heroine trying to give herself a pep talk with "I'm a pandemic-era teacher, dammit!"
Grumpy/sunshine is one of my favorite tropes and it was done well despite also being an insta-love, which I don't love.

A (probably unrealistic) glimpse at my reading plans for the next couple weeks... I organize a holiday book swap at work and like to give everyone who takes part a used book in addition to what their partner buys them. I've been setting books aside for the last few months as I finish one or come across them at sales, but I have a specific person in mind for each of these. I just have to read tbem before i can give them away! #schoollibraries

This rom com was so funny. Almost like hate to love relationship, even when things happen too fast (dangerous). There are sexy parts, spicy as it is called now. Too repetitive these spicy parts but it seems is the modality now🤷🏽‍♀️That end was so funny. I liked the mystery part. It made me laughed. 3⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I ended up bailing on this one. Too spicy for me! 😂 2y
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks Yes! I think is like a modality, present in in many books genres. I finished this one because there were funny parts. Don‘t read Katee Robert, her books go beyond spicy, I like the story but they are too spicy🤷🏽‍♀️ 2y

Read this book for the #LittensLoveRomance group. Even with the mystery element, I would still call it a fluff/beach read. I liked the characters a lot and they were what made the story. They are polar opposites. Myes is a grump-a-saurous and Taylor is all brightness and sunshine. Yet it worked and they completed each other. And then the attraction was off the charts. So lots of steam in this book. 3.5ish⭐️

#LittensLoveRomance Sorry I‘m a couple days late on this! Real life, amiright? I hope you all enjoyed this fun romance we read this month - I certainly did. Here are a few questions for our end of book discussion but feel free to talk about anything you want down below. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts!

TheSpineView I enjoyed this one. I thought the mystery helped put everything together pacing, plot, characters. I wonder if there will be a follow up book?? 2y
julesG I'm not a fan of this author. I didn't like the insta-lust/love of the book. (please don't hate me) 4) I don't need an epilogue to a (romance) novel. It's nice, but not necessary. I think it's missing from this book, because Jude's story might come next. 2y
See All 15 Comments
StayCurious @julesG this was my first time reading this author so I had no idea what to expect! I was surprised at the level of insta-spice lol but not completely opposed to it. I think it depends on my mood 2y
mcipher I honestly really liked the mystery even though it took a backseat! I‘m not always a fan of instalove but sometimes it‘s fun to suspend disbelief, and I think it worked here - this was just such fun fluff. I don‘t always like epilogues, but sometimes it‘s nice to tie things up, and again I think this one worked because it was still funny! I didn‘t love the dual POV (I usually don‘t, I feel like the male perspective often feels forced) (edited) 2y
mcipher The Jude/Dante thing? So annoyed because I totally think she forgot to take it anywhere 😂 2y
OriginalCyn620 1. I‘ve read one other book by this author, which was a straight up rom-com, so going into this one, I expected the spice, and wasn‘t at all surprised that the mystery took a back seat. I was okay with it though! 2y
OriginalCyn620 2. I was a little annoyed and I‘m not sure if it was intentional or not. My first thought was that it could lead to another book with Jude and Dante. 2y
OriginalCyn620 3. I‘m a big fan of multiple POVs! I loved it in this case, and yes, I probably would prefer both POVs in romance. I like to know where both parties stand and their thoughts throughout the book. 2y
OriginalCyn620 4. I think epilogues really depend on the book. I‘ve read some books where one didn‘t seem necessary and some books that seemed like it needed one. For this particular book, I think an epilogue was needed after Myles‘ big romantic gesture! 2y
slategreyskies 1. I wouldn‘t say I was frustrated by it, but I definitely skimmed the sex scenes. I think they were written well. It‘s not that. It‘s just that I wanted to get on with the story already. 🤣 2y
slategreyskies 2. Yeah, I think it was intentional. This way, she has an option to write another book. 2y
slategreyskies 3. While I liked the dual point of view, the first few chapters from Myles‘ point of view just seemed weird, like the author hadn‘t quite nailed a male perspective. Once I got into the storyline, I didn‘t notice it, though. So, either it got better or I was just too absorbed to see it. 2y
slategreyskies 4. I do like epilogues to an extent. I didn‘t feel like this one was necessary, but I did still enjoy it. 2y
Catsandbooks Just finished the book and loved it! This was my first Tessa Bailey and I'll say I'm a fan now! 1. I was not disappointed at all in the mystery taking a backseat. Gimme all the spice! 🌶😂 2. I do wish the jude/Dante story was included but like everyone else said, it's probably for a sequel. 3. I like dual pov most of the time so it was great here. 4. I thought the epilogue was cute and enjoy when they're included. 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.21-epilogue: What a great ending! So romantic - after all that time spent denying they can be together, Myles pursues her to her home and proceeds to convince her he‘s staying and they belong together. And the epilogue was so fun and swoony. My only complaint is the Jude -Dante storyline was never resolved. So frustrating-There had better be a spin-off coming! But overall a great read! I enjoyed the grumpy/sunshine trope⬇️

StayCurious Taylor and Myles were fun characters. I did find the mystery ended up taking a back seat to all the spicy times, but it was still an interesting side plot. And Myles is my new book boyfriend. I loved seeing his thoughts - so intense! 2y
OriginalCyn620 Yes, I totally agree with all that! It was a fun read for sure. Thank you for hosting! 😊 2y

peanutnine This was such a fun book! I agree that the mystery was downplayed to make space for the romance but I was okay with that. Myles was a great lead, loved his backstory! Definitely hoping for a Jude/Dante book! 🤞🏻 2y
KristiAhlers I had read this one before but I went and re-read the ending. I adored this couple! 💜💜💜 2y
mcipher Oops I‘m late but I agree - super fun, cute couple, lots of hilarious moments. The romance was definitely the focus with the mystery taking a backseat and the lack of Jude/Dante resolution was frustrating. I did love how it ended - the proposal scene 😂😂 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.17: Taylor tries to remain impartial after the wowza but can‘t, especially when she defends Myles to outsiders. She toys around with the L word. Whoops. Watch out for those strings, Tay. Also, We finally meet the infamous Dante, the guy Jude is pining over. Ch.18: getting it on in a church? Holy Smokes - I‘m pretty liberal and even I think that‘s a bit much. Still, it did seem to open up Myles‘ feelings for Taylor. ⬇️

StayCurious He realizes he loves her, now he just has to tell her. Before he can, news comes that the mayor is actually a rental property owner - who saw that coming? Ch.19: uh oh Taylor puts herself at risk when they go to catch the mayor and Myles just can‘t handle it. So she walks away and he lets her. 💔Ch. 20: Myles finally has a ❤️ to ❤️ with his brother and comes to a decision about Taylor - he also realizes who the other culprit is & Taylor is at risk 2y
MeganAnn Oh man that church scene!! 😱 I‘m pretty liberal when it comes to sex scenes as well but that was a LOT. I kept waiting for a priest or nun or someone to walk in on them before they went too far and was like “no, they can‘t possibly do it in a church.” I also sort of wished we got a bit more info about Dante? Like he‘s such a big deal to her brother but we only saw a tiny bit of him. Loved Myles reconciling with his brother though ❤️ 2y
See All 7 Comments
OriginalCyn620 I have some thoughts about the church scene but I won‘t say them because I don‘t want to make anyone mad! I‘ll just say that it didn‘t bother me in the least. 😂 I was also kinda let down that we didn‘t get more info about the Dante situation. That seems like it would be interesting. And yes, it made my heart happy when Myles and his brother reconnected! We didn‘t get a whole lot of their dynamic but what we did see, I enjoyed! 2y
mcipher The church scene was hilarious - I loved Taylor saying an innuendo to the nuns by mistake 😂 And I was right about the bad guy! I have to admit I finished reading because that was a solid cliffhanger I couldn‘t stop at… and we never get Jude/Dante closure 🤔 2y
peanutnine @mcipher oh my god the innuendo to the nun was hilarious! 🤣 Also, maybe there'll be a spin-off book about Jude/Dante? 👀 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.13: this sentence - “rejection my brain understands but my heart doesn‘t want to accept” - I‘m feeling sad for both Taylor and Myles. Ch.14: I‘m strongly suspecting the mayor and/or her assistant of committing the crime. It‘s got to be a way of getting votes. ⬇️

StayCurious Ch.15: My word! Getting assaulted in broad daylight in a public library? Scary. The killer is getting desperate because Taylor may have just hit the jackpot and broken open the case. Also, Myles so worried about Taylor? Swoon! Ch.16: 🎇🎆🧨🧯🚒 IT finally happens and WOWZA. 2y

The steam was off the charts! 🔥 This is a murder mystery/romance, and TBH, the murder mystery takes a back seat. Did I mind? No, I didn‘t. Once Taylor and Myles met, the insta love began, and I was all about it. The grumpy/sunshine trope was entertaining. Honestly, if you‘ve ever instantly lusted after someone, you‘ll probably “get” this book. I don‘t think Bailey takes herself too seriously…this was pure fun!

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.9: Is Taylor being targeted for digging into the murder or was the flying buoy just a coincidence? This time when Jude gets stung by a jellyfish. And every time they stop, there‘s Thinking. And resolutions to stay away. Ugh! ⬇️

StayCurious Ch.11: 🌮 and Murder talk - makes for a fun evening. Myles finally shares some thoughts on the case - mainly, the Vic‘s sister Lisa is his prime suspect. And Taylor decides to make a trip to the store to take things into her own hands - so to speak.

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.5: An ominous note hidden beneath the floorboards…and angry locals, including the mayor-set to stop renters from ruining their town. The plot thickens…and the heat intensifies between Myles and Taylor. Ch.6 we get teased about Myles‘ difficult past which has made him so prickly - Taylor finds what she thinks is the murder weapon - what are the odds? ⬇️

StayCurious Ch.7 Man, this author really knows how to write scenes that ratchet up the heat between her characters. I‘m totally shipping Myles and Taylor. Like hard. Ch.8 This chapter is SPICY - until Myles and Taylor are interrupted by nautical themed vandalism. And darn it, Myles starts THINKING. 2y

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.1 Great start to the book - we get right into the action as vacationers Taylor and her brother find first creepy peepholes, then a dead body in their rental house! Not what you want to find when you‘re just looking for some R&R. Especially when it cost so much💵. Ch.2: The murdered guy happens to be the owner of the house, who got into it with a renter‘s father over the peepholes. Police have their suspect in the bag. But ⬇️

StayCurious Taylor‘s not so sure and she wants to investigate further. And the Vic‘s sister feels the same and decides to hire a PI. I find Taylor a bit annoying so far - she should stay out of what definitely doesn‘t concern her. I don‘t like her nosiness…but maybe she‘ll grow on me. ⬇️ 2y
StayCurious Ch.3: Ok is it just me or is Myles crushing on Taylor majorly swoonworthy? Even though he finds her annoying he‘s definitely attracted and well on his way to being wrapped around her finger. I still think Taylor should stay out of the murder business but Myles‘ reaction is funny.
Ch.4: ok…the heat between these two is already off the charts! I‘m seriously here for it and love their back and forth.

BarkingMadRead Omg I want someone to swoon over me the way Myles swoons over Taylor! I cannot wait I watch this progress! 2y
OriginalCyn620 Yes, I was slightly annoyed by Taylor, but she‘s trying to push herself out of her comfort zone and maybe change for the better, and I can‘t fault her for that. And the author is not beating around any bushes! We get to the rental house and creepy peepholes and a dead body right away, closely followed by sticky and steamy heat between the two MCs. And I‘m here for it too! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 2y
sprainedbrain Omg I love the way Tessa Bailey writes! ❤️ I was a little annoyed with Taylor in the first couple of chapters but by the end of these 4 chapters, I like her! Myles is totally swoonworthy already. I LOVE that we jumped right in to the mystery and then directly into the spicy. So glad we are reading this one faster! 😂 2y
mcipher Yes! This is already so fun and I‘m excited to see more of the banter between these two - the Cheesecake Factory cracked me up, and the red panties cliffhanger? 😅 (edited) 2y
TheSpineView Myles and Taylor definitely have an attraction. I also love the gruffness of Myles. 2y

Listening to the tagged audiobook while I clean and put out the Halloween decorations! It‘s our first holiday since getting our puppy, so hopefully Puddles will leave everything be. I doubt it, but here‘s hoping! 😅 #SuperSeptember @Andrew65

AnnR Just the right amount of seasonal pumpkin spookiness. 🎃 🎃 🎃 (edited) 2y
Andrew65 Good luck with Puddles and the decorations 🙈 2y

#UnpopularOpinion

Insta-Lust, flat characters

This was the third or fourth book by this author that I tried. I actually stuck this one out to the end, but it was tough.

The male narrator sounded like way older than the character, who's in his mid-thirties.

More #LitErotica than #Romance

Could have benefited from more editing. ⬇️

julesG Two examples of bad editing: "The corners of her mouth turned up at the corners."; they had safe sex, the condom being rolled on took up about a paragraph but afterwards he used his ??? as lubricant to get her off again??? 2y
julesG I know, I'm picky. I should just turn my brain off. 2y
squirrelbrain Ew, TMI for the second point! 🤣 2y
dylanisreading The spoilers made me laugh. 😂 2y

"Please,” he urges gruffly against my lips. “Stop.” “Stop what?” “I don‘t know. Everything. No matter what you‘re doing, it gets to me. When you‘re pissed or laughing or hurt or not even with me, I get torn up over it.” “That‘s them. Those are the words,” I whisper, shaken, chest twisting." ?

krisreadsromance Okay I wasn‘t really reeled in for this one when the blurb dropped, but this quote has me reconsidering 👀 2y

I‘m a pandemic-era teacher, dammit. That basically qualifies me for a presidential run.

If you‘re looking for a quick and spicy read with laughter that doesn‘t take itself too seriously pick up this one. Taylor and Myles are the definition of opposites attract. He‘s a bounty hunter. She‘s an elementary school teacher. Add a murder and romance between the two and voila. Perfect book to escape into. #bookspin #romantsy @TheAromaofBooks

5feet.of.fury I liked this one too! I‘m not typically a romance reader, but there was a murder in there so I gave it a try 😂 it was a fun read! 2y

Mehso-so

This was an ok, romantic/suspense with some comedy and Tessa Bailey‘s typical steaminess. An elementary teacher and her brother stumble onto a murder and a bounty hunter comes into to help solve the case. I wanted to love this, and I did finish it but I found it just to be meh. 3⭐️

Peri had surgery today to remove a tumor from her back leg. It went well and we'll find out in a week or so if it was cancerous (they couldn't tell from the biopsy). She's exhausted so I'm reading in bed with her. I'll have to put the cone on her when I go to sleep so she doesn't bite or lick at her stitches.

I'm starting Tessa Bailey's newest.

Soubhiville Poor Peri. I hope you get good news, and I hope she heals easily and swiftly. 💕 2y

This was really cute and 🌶. Exactly what it was supposed to be. Perfect beach read, quarantine misery buster, or date night with yourself 🥰

5‘ tall 2nd grade teacher who is obsessed with murder podcasts has her vacation interrupted by a murder and teams up with an unwitting bounty hunter to find the murderer and the bounty hunter‘s heart of gold.

Super cute. Corny, but I was really very honestly rooting for everyone.
