The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra
The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra | Vaseem Khan
Mumbai, murder and a baby elephant combine in a charming, joyful mystery for fans of Alexander McCall Smith and Rachel Joyce. On the day he retires, Inspector Ashwin Chopra discovers that he has inherited an elephant: an unlikely gift that could not be more inconvenient. For Chopra has one last case to solve... But as his murder investigation leads him across Mumbai - from its richest mansions to its murky underworld - he quickly discovers that a baby elephant may be exactly what an honest man needs. So begins the start of a quite unexpected partnership, and an utterly delightful new series.

Well, this book was just charming, and exactly what I needed during this stressful week! So glad that it starts a new series.

Inspector Chopra has been forced into retirement after a heart attack. Surprisingly, a favorite uncle bequeaths him with, of all things, a baby elephant. As Chopra struggles to confront his retirement, he cannot ignore the drowning death of a young man. As he follows clues, his elephant becomes an invaluable assistant.

As I suspected, I am now invested in another mystery series. 🤷🏼‍♂️ What surprised me most was not the moments of silliness and fun, or even the family melodrama, but rather how sobering a look at corruption, how seedy a sprawling city underbelly Chopra's investigations and reflections reveal. The author does not hold back, and this fictionalized (?) modern Mumbai is all the more vividly alive as a result. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I'm not interested in the traditional gender roles in evidence, the focus on getting and keeping a husband, and having children (in wedlock) determining a woman's value, but Chopra's wife having a backbone even amongst the weight of these societal expectations (and a constantly complaining mother) redeems the characterization somewhat. 1y
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I was pleasantly surprised to see a flicker of transgender representation in the text, though mention of violence against transgender people, while statistically plausible, was disheartening, as was other terminology by which the transgender person was referred to which might be cultural but feels outdated/inaccurate and possibly unappreciated by that community. 1y
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Here's hoping as my reading of this series progresses from its first entry in 2015 that I see some of the improvements in minority representation one notes in contemporary fiction. 1y
Robotswithpersonality 5/? On the 'not broke, don't fix it' side:
Baby elephant side kick!
Dour detective bluffing his way through absurd circumstances with gruff demeanour even as his dignity quietly curls up and dies (see shopping mall escalator and unwilling elephant; attempted surveillance in brothel while fending off its employees)
Classic denouement where villains cheerily or dramatically reveal all aspects of crimes/dastardly plan
Pro-choice mother informing pregnant teenage daughter of the full range of options 👍🏻
1y
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 ⚠️Animal cruelty, child trafficking 1y

The first in Vaseem Khan‘s BABY GANESHA AGENCY SERIES is a delightful cosy crime novel that includes the grit of poverty, economic change and corruption. Chopra is an interesting character, who feels increasingly anachronistic in modern India while mourning for what his country is becoming and I enjoyed his relationship with the spirited Poppy who enjoys modern developments while Ganesha brings playful whimsy. I will definitely read on.

Writing this months later, I do not recall who the culprit was. I remember thinking I would probably read give the next book in the series a try someday, but that it was just so-so. I don't know if everyone would classify this as a #cozy #mystery , but it would classify it that way.

This is not my type of genre, therefore I could not get into it at all. But the MIL gifted it to me, so I had to give it a go. I think she thought I'd like it cuz she knows I like elephants. 🐘

I had such fun reading this story! It was set in modern India and Chopra was a man who loved tradition and was rather unsettled at the modernization taking place in Mumbai. The mystery was a trail of discoveries that drew me in further and further until I was absolutely invested in finding the killer of the young man. There were also some humorous moments that had me laughing at the absurdity of what was taking place in this story.

After reading this all night (while I was feeling ill) I fell in love with the baby elephant 😍. He was so cute and I can‘t wait to see more of him in future books. I liked this a lot and the main character was interesting and I liked his personality in the book. I learned a lot about Indian culture and was tempted to try Indian food for the first time after this book! Oh and it‘s on sale for $2.99 ebook

It feels like I haven't gotten to check out Litsy in ages! I've been solo-parenting for the last 3 weeks because my husband is working a big project that requires him to be out of town Monday-Friday. It's likely going to be like this for another month or so. I haven't had much chance for physical reading either (getting in lots of audio!). I'm hoping I'll finish this one up today. I'm really enjoying it! #booked2020 #SetInIndia

This was reasonably entertaining.... The best part was, of course, the baby elephant, but he's also entirely implausible. As a mystery this isn't great, because there's a lot of focus on Chopra and his wife, and the mystery is solved pretty abruptly. I don't regret reading it, but I also wouldn't regret skipping it.

I‘ve been doing a lot of heavy reading (and thinking) lately, so this was a much-deserved treat. I was having trouble understanding the audiobook at first . . . until I realized that I had the playback speed set at 1.5 from my previous book. Oops! 1.25 was fine. Anyway, straight-as-an-arrow retired policeman Chopra spectacularly fails at retirement, aided by baby elephant Ganesh. What‘s not to like?!

This was the next #whodunnituk and when writing my comments in the notebook I am definitely out of line with my fellow readers who all loved it! I didn‘t hate it - it was a nice afternoon read - nice/cosy, hence the so-so.
