Feared and hated by all, Quasimodo is looked after by Dom Claude Frollo, a stern, cold priest who ignores the poor hunchback in the face of his frequent public torture. But someone steps forward to helpthe beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, whose single act of kindness fills Quasimodo with love. Can the hunchback save the lovely gypsy from Frollo s evil plan, or will they all perish in the shadows of Notre Dame? An epic tale of beauty and sadness, The Hunchback of Notre Dame portrays the sufferings of humanity with compassion and power.Isabel Roche teaches French language and literature at Bennington College. #OnThisDay in 1831, Gosselin published Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris (commonly known as The Hunchback of Notre Dame). The cathedral had fallen into disrepair, and Hugo wrote a novel centering on the beautiful space in an attempt to save it. His writing sparked renewed interest in Gothic Architecture across France and led to a major restoration project for the titular cathedral. #HistoryGetsLIT

I‘ve lost track of how many puzzles this book took me. I restarted it several times before it caught. Perhaps I‘d have done better with print but I did quite enjoy the narrator so I‘m not sure what the problem was. The writing was amazing, obviously this is a classic for a reason, and it was good to finally pick this up.

wanderinglynn Ooh, I like that puzzle 🧩 3y

This book is really long. The story is good. But I think Hugo tried to use every word in the French language. It could have been a novella. And there is definitely a lack of talking gargoyles. But the goat is cute.

The picture is from a trip I took in 2018. And isn't it stunning? The people who made this didn't even have electricity. Just some random perspective.

BarbaraBB It is stunning 🤩 3y
IuliaC It is amazing indeed how they built cathedrals, which are tremendous architectural jewels, without the resources we have today 3y

My 11 year old is in a "sleep at 2am wake at 11am" cycle and as she is in her parents bed, I thought I'd play my audiobook of The Hunchback of Notre Dame to help her (us) sleep. Hubby is up also so the 3 of us are listening.

I unfortunately don't own my own copy of this book but looking at the chapter lengths I roughly added up around 22 hours!
Let's see how we go...

#BFCr4 #week4 (I think)

Finally my check in.
NO soda - I‘ve had zero soda
Meditation - 3x this past week
No exercise
No stretching
Read about 25 books or so (mostly children‘s books)
I did finish the tagged book last week so I‘m happy about that, and it turned out pretty good. This past week and the beginning of this week has been lacking in a lot of motivation. I‘ve been super tired, and haven‘t been able to get over that hump.

wanderinglynn I always find myself tired and dragging around this time of year. The seasons changing, the time change, it all seems to effect me. Hang in there. 💚 You had a great week not drinking soda, meditating, & reading. 🙌🏻 5y
