I haven‘t rly enjoyed the last “fairytale-esque” books I‘ve read, but this restored my faith in the genre. Beautifully written, magical and simple- I adored the MC and all the other characters. It gave “The Village” vibes, if you‘ve seen that movie.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I haven‘t read this one (yet) but I loved her take on the 12 dancing princesses 1y

Like the best fairy tales, this story was deliciously dark as it exposed the darkness that can be found in anyone under the right, or better, worst circumstances. An isolated village, an impenetrable forest, mysterious creatures, missing villagers, neighbors, & strangers are all in play in this YA fairy tale retelling that felt a little long but which nevertheless kept me turning the pages. It‘s eerie, dark, romantic, & an entertaining read.

Fortunately, after repeating pages 117-148 the story picked up exactly where it was supposed to on page 149. 😅

I sometimes…okay, often…wonder how such big mistakes go unnoticed by the printer/publisher.🤷‍♀️

More amusing than annoying though so it‘s all good! I just have a book with extra personality!

wanderinglynn That‘s a big oops! I‘m glad it‘s not missing any pages. 2y
ravenlee I guess it‘s better to have extras than missing sections. I once had a required read for a college class that was missing something like 70 pages and had to get a replacement in a hurry but was still behind for the class! 2y
TracyReadsBooks @ravenlee The situation you describe definitely would have been annoying instead of entertaining! 😠 2y
ravenlee Come to think of it, I had a copy of Robinson Crusoe, one of those old Wordsworth Classics or such, that had a weird set of pages. They were numbered correctly, but the text went something like page 132, then 134, 135, then 133. It was also microscopic print and I was about ready to chuck the whole thing. I only stuck it out because I knew I‘d never give it another go and couldn‘t bear the thought of having wasted all that time. 2y

I actually don‘t mind that it wasn‘t very “horror”. I was intrigued by the mystery from the start. A handful of the characters were likable and the rest were insufferable. My main issue is that the end leaves some things unresolved. Pretty big things, in my opinion. I still had fun reading this. The author‘s prose was beautiful.

This will be mailed out Monday afternoon 🤗

This was a delightfully eerie historical horror about a small charming town, where things and people start to go very very wrong. Do not be deceived by the beautiful cover and the fact this is categorized as YA. This is very dark and violent at times. A great Fall read & I really enjoyed it! 5⭐️

A really good but somewhat claustrophobic book about a small town on the edge of the woods. The founders of the town thought they had banished all the monsters but one nasty winter they return.
It's more fairytale than horror but it definitely has it's creepy moments.

I really liked this book! Well-written and super addictive… I read big chunks of it all at once and didn‘t want to quit. I‘m not sure it‘s horror-y enough for our horror #LMPBC group, but it definitely has its creepy moments and I loved the characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This will be on its way to you by the end of the week, Ashley!

I liked her 1st book better, but that could simply be because this one gave me nightmares. She hooks you in from the very 1st paragraph. Creepy, spooky…a small town seems to be disintegrating and it seems like Ellerie‘s family is right in the center of it.

A story of what I would call “fae” feeding on the chaos they bring to a small town. It reminded me of the short story “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” - how aliens may have set a few things in motion, but ultimately neighbors turn against neighbors as suspicion/paranoia takes over. Ellerie tries to stay afloat as her small town falls apart from the inside, her family divides, creatures roam the woods, and she falls for a secretive stranger.

StaceGhost I love this book! I was going to say people in her town were awful but they were just manipulated. (her brother was the worst, though) 3y
BriannaT @StaceGhost I agree, her brother was absolutely terrible! Ellerie was so defensive of him, saying that was a good guy before all the chaos ensued, but we never saw any of it. I‘m not particularly sad about how the book ended in regards to his character. 3y

Doing a lot of yard work today but took a little break to do my January Wrap Up. I read a total of 5 books & am halfway through Small Favors. My favorite from this stack would have to be Seven Sins of Snow! February I doubt I'll get much reading done because you know "Adulting". It's my birthday month & we also will be doing a lot of remodeling to our house & yard this month I hope. But my goal is to read at least 3 books including my Buddy Read?

Just like with her previous book, Craig‘s writing is beautiful and the atmosphere she creates is delightful. While I liked the American gothic feel of the story, it wasn‘t creative or unique enough to really hook me. The “twist” was obvious from the beginning, and the ending was predictable.

I loved this book. Erin A. Craig didn‘t disappoint! A House of Salt and Sorrows was great and this one just as great! A strong young female main character doing her best to keep her family together and fed, a mysterious young man from the woods, and a town that slowly turns on each other. It‘s a romance, a horror and even a little fairytale mixed in. It‘s a must read!

My #bookspin for September wasn‘t working for me. About 1/3 in and it feels like an M Night Shyamalan movie- and I‘m decidedly not a fan. Bailing. #unpopularopinion as it has a 100% rating before me 🤷‍♀️.

Underneath all of Small Favors gorgeous writing, there lies a powerful story about what lurks deep within the hearts of humans and what it takes to reveal that. I loved House of Salt and Sorrows, but I truly think Craig outdid herself with this one. There were some fantastic parallels that brought even more depth into the story and it never failed - not even for a second - to fully captivate me.

Writing was so good + hauntingly beautiful. Love the while creepy aesthetic of the book + the bees. Loved the plot + mystery, especially the history + close knit village. Lots or characters so confusing at times until I got comfortable. Liked the drama with each character, the odd happenings in the village with the animals, the massacres in the pines. romance enough for it to be satisfying. Loved the paranormal plot twists. ending was satisfying.

Small Favors is a young adult historical fantasy about a tiny isolated town that finds their citizens in the grip of a series of attacks from monstrous creatures on supply runs, mysterious newcomers, resentments against each other, bad luck and increasing violence.
