The Bone Shard Daughter
The Bone Shard Daughter | Andrea Stewart
In an empire controlled by bone shard magic, Lin, the former heir to the emperor will fight to reclaim her magic and her place on the throne. The Bone Shard Daughter marks the debut of a major new voice in epic fantasy. The emperor's reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire's many islands. Lin is the emperor's daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic. Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright - and save her people.

I devoured this #LMPBC #GroupM book! I loved the world building and multiple POVs we got. Jovis was my absolute favorite. There were definitely some surprises I did not see coming and I loved the magic in this world. I now need to go find book 2 immediately! Great pick! Will mail out in the next few weeks! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An epically woven story with multiple POVS and a developing plot that slowly deepens as you read. This was a dark magic, not welded by witches but by a greedy, twisted, super effed up emperor. I enjoyed the wild tales and mystical creatures. The characters were complex and the whole concept was unique, at least to me as this is far from my normal genre. (Which may be evolving as I read and enjoy more fantasy/sci-fy) Book #85 in 2023

The floating and migrating islands of The Phoenix Empire is one of my favorite geographical world settings I‘ve ever come across.
The way they have to chart the movements of the islands to navigate to them, the same way someone would have to chart planetary orbits to travel between them, gives the world itself an air of mystery and personality. Loving this book and series so far.

Lin is the daughter of the emperor & has been locked in the palace her whole life, vowing to master the forbidden bone shard magic. But how far is she willing to go to claim her throne?

🎧 This is a busy book. In a good way.

You get 5 POV‘s. Two are 1st person & three are 3rd person. See? Busy!

There‘s an animal companion.

Steampunk-y robots.

A world of islands so seafaring & sea creatures are explored.

Interesting magic system.

Only a smidge of romance.

Politics!!! An emperor‘s rule is breaking down & coming to an end. An heir that‘ll need to fight for her rights! Rebellion.

Enjoyed it!

I have been meaning to pick this book up for awhile now so when it won the February poll for my fantasy book club I was beyond excited. I couldn't put this book down & I so badly want to start book 2 but I don't want that to influence the discussion when book club meets next week. Also, I think I have a new favorite character. If anything happens to Mephi I will riot!! 😜

Loved this! Multiple points of view- but each has such a distinct voice and world view that it quickly created a rich world rather than mass confusion! A great mix of magic, mystery, politics, adventure, desire and intrigue from characters that all leap of the page with their flaws, realism and personal stories. Can‘t wait to get into book 2! Im a real Robin Hobb fan and this is the closest I‘ve come to finding something like her!

A very fun fantasy read! It reminded me a lot of reading Black Sun. All of the characters were great, especially Mephi! The island world was great, and Lin dealing with her dad‘s boneshard magic and experiments was compelling. I did kind of wish the three characters who were barely featured had more POV chapters, because I kept forgetting about them. #LGBTQ #Fantasy #AAPI #Islands #AnimalFriend

This fantasy takes a while to build up steam due to all the world-building, but it pulls you along as it gets going. The creepy magic system, archipelago world, and strange creatures will captivate you even more than the humans (and there are many). I‘m not sure how Stewart will top her Big Bad here (an emperor who sucks the life from his people to make FLESH PUPPETS 😱). But I might need to snatch up the sequel to watch her try. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #d100

Kenyazero I‘m reading this right now too! Just about to finish. It‘s been such a fun ride. So far, all of my predictions have come true, which always makes me feel like the author wants the same adventures as me 😆 2y

I‘m pretty sure January was actually two months rolled into one. Being sick half of the month really cut down on the amount I read. I also didn‘t enjoy a lot. I bounced from book to book and these were the only ones that I read all the way through. But February has a lot of fun releases so I‘m hoping to beat this reading slump next month. How did your reading month go?

tokorowilliamwallace O.o reading on the trails or at the park is fun. There was an arboretum on the north side of Baltimore with outdoor and greenhouse gardens and an historic property, open for public events/weddings, trails circling the property, with a huge open picnic area which was great for spontaneous visits when in the area to snack and read. I miss the public spaces Maryland provided. 3y

So I know I broke my book buying ban but I broke it for a good reason! I had to get my Book of the Month box, so that I could get my Book of the Year pick. We won‘t talk about the other three books that I grabbed, and one of them isn‘t even from BOTM. The way I see it if I‘m going to break the ban I might as well go big.

October was probably my slowest reading month ever. It started off at a typical pace for me but then all the Halloween events came to my games and I kind of got lost in the gaming void. I also read a lot of little books that I don't normally track so there's not much to show here.

I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed this. There were three main povs and I was curious to see how they would connect, if they did at all. I liked watching the mystery of bone shard magic unfold and the growing rebellion in the empire. I'm a little sad the next one isn't available yet. This was my #CalibreRoulette pick for the month.

1. I actually have a couple favorites which are so different: tagged-original epic fantasy, The MindF*ck series by S.T. Abby (that pen name)-horror/thriller/romance (totally genre bending, very dark), The Guncle by Steve Rowley-adorable heartwarming yet sad family story. All are 5⭐️ excellent reads.
2. The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune!

This was a fantastic, original epic fantasy. Taking place in a fantasy world with Asian influences. It follows a strong cast of characters in a kingdom that is starting to fray at the seams. With elements of high seas adventure, creepy steampunk and just a time touch of romance. I highly recommend and can‘t wait for book 2! 5⭐️ Another #bookspinbingo pick.

I enjoyed this fantasy but I‘m not sure how well I can explain it...here goes... In a world ruled by an emperor who wields bone shard magic—meaning a small sliver of bone is taken from each citizen & those shards animate automatons used to keep everything and everyone in order—unrest is growing. A princess who has lost her memory, a pirate who starts doing good deeds, & rebellion make for an interesting read which starts slow but keeps building.

You know how a book can linger in your TBR stack, never reaching the top & more often working it‘s way towards the bottom as more books get added? And then you rediscover the book & remind yourself there is a reason you wanted to read it & at last you decide, “Now is the time!” And then you start reading it & within a page or two say to yourself “HOW COULD I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS BOOK?!?” I‘m asking myself that question right now! Good so far.

MayJasper You've made me want to read it now. Your fault 😅 4y
