Vampires in the Lemon Grove
Vampires in the Lemon Grove: Stories | Karen Russell
From the author of the New York Times best seller Swamplandia!a finalist for the Pulitzer Prizea magical new collection of stories that showcases Karen Russells gifts at their inimitable best. A dejected teenager discovers that the universe is communicating with him through talismanic objects left behind in a seagulls nest. A community of girls held captive in a silk factory slowly transmute into human silkworms, spinning delicate threads from their own bellies, and escape by seizing the means of production for their own revolutionary ends. A massage therapist discovers she has the power to heal by manipulating the tattoos on a war veterans lower torso. When a group of boys stumble upon a mutilated scarecrow bearing an uncanny resemblance to the missing classmate they used to torment, an ordinary tale of high school bullying becomes a sinister fantasy of guilt and atonement. In a familys disastrous quest for land in the American West, the monster is the human hunger for acquisition, and the victim is all we hold dear. And in the collections marvelous title storyan unforgettable parable of addiction and appetite, mortal terror and mortal lovetwo vampires in a sun-drenched lemon grove try helplessly to slake their thirst for blood. Karen Russell is one of todays most celebrated and vital writershonored in The New Yorkers list of the twenty best writers under the age of forty, Grantas Best of Young American Novelists, and the National Book Foundations five best writers under the age of thirty-five. Her wondrous new work displays a young writer of superlative originality and invention coming into the full range and scale of her powers. This ebook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

A great fall read - an often creepy collection of stories that raised the hair on the back of my neck more than once. Some really great stories in here (a few I didn‘t like quite as much). Overall I liked this collection more than her novel, Swamplandia, that I read years ago.

So, this may not be a popular review but this was a so-so for me. I enjoyed the stories, but overall this is not my kind of book, but I felt the need to complete it (audiobook). I can‘t put my finger on why I had to finish it, so I feel that makes it at least a So-So. I even had a hard time picking my favorite short story, but “Rules for Antarctic Tailgating” and “Graveless Doll” stood out for me.

Therewillbebooks I've been circling this book for a while and wondering whether I should read Swamplandia, by the same author. 4y
NikkiM5 @Therewillbebooks I was wondering about Swamplandia, I checked out the reviews and its review rating is about the same as Lemon Grove. Like I said, I felt the need to finish it so I will give Swamplandia a try, at least as an audiobook. 4y

Whenever I read a book like this I am astounded by the imagination some people have. These stories were strange and surreal and used their otherworldliness to illustrate trauma, mortality, and autonomy. I particularly loved the women as silkworms story and the title story. Eerie and strange in the best ways. #animalonthecover #booked2020

I'm usually really into weird, eclectic stuff, but for some reason I didn't enjoy many of these short stories. To me they were just okay. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It could be that I've had a super rough work month in April and the stories just weren't grabbing my attention. I'll try a reread again one day soon. ⭐⭐⭐

This was a wonderfully written book of 8 short stories, most of which kept me engaged and entertained. Each one, though different, tied together relationships, identity, and physical objects to prove the humanity behind us all. Some were funny. Most were haunting. All of them were weird, as many combined elements of horror with elements of fantasy.

Thanks to @Cinfhen for the recommendation!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad you liked this one. A couple of the stories just grated on me. But, either way, it‘s a great choice for the prompt! 👊🏻♥️📚 6y
LiterRohde @BarbaraTheBibliophage There were a couple stories, like the horse president story where I was like “huh?” But that is mostly for the fact that when I read I tend to be looking for a good surface story that has a deeper meaning. I struggle to see a point to the horse presidents. But that might just be my curmudgeonly demeanor and I need to learn to just have more fun. (edited) 6y
See All 6 Comments
LiterRohde @BarbaraTheBibliophage I actually thought the tattoo story was one of the better ones. I actually came out with a favorable view of the therapist. Though the word mispronunciations did get to me. There were times that I knew that this was not the way they would act as a professional. I chalked it up to soap opera drama. In a soap, everyone who spends too much time together ends up having conflicting and or inappropriate feelings. 6y
LiterRohde @BarbaraTheBibliophage Maybe I‘m desensitized since it seems OK to make fun of teachers or depict them in a bad light and I‘ve just had to get used to that being the norm. I don‘t like it and I think it hurts my profession, but what am I going to do but just be the best example of a teacher I can be. I don‘t know, maybe that‘s jaded and I should be more upset. 6y

Wow. What a fantastically weird collections of stories. The titular story is fantastic & my favorite. I also really enjoyed ‘The Graveless Doll of Eric Mutis‘ about a bully coming to terms with what he‘d done as well as the story of a family homesteading in Nebraska. Magical realism, fantasy, horror, & the endless wonder of possibility suffuse this work which is not for the faint of heart. A collection of stories perfect for adventurous readers.

abbielistenstobooks I didn't realize it was short stories when I started listening, and was super disappointed that the lemon grove story was over so quickly! I loved that one. I also loved the one about the horses. Now it's months later and I still crack up about it every so often. 6y

I've had some great luck with story collections this year- this one is no exception. These stories all have a magical realist quality, but also a wonderful range of styles: fable, coming-of-age, farce, satire, and even one that verges on horror (and this is just in an 8-story collection, mind you). The magical parts are memorable, but some stories are more fantastic than others: the perfect blend of ideas and characters is what makes them special.

Eehhhhhhhhh..........see this is just what I worried would happen. I did like a couple of the stories, but most of them were just too odd or hard to get a hold of or just.....not stories. I felt like she left a number of the stories unfinished, or maybe that‘s the point but it annoyed me. And honestly a few of them I found dull as all get out. Sigh. 2/5 ⭐️

This collection of short stories mostly didn‘t connect with me. They were quirky but only mildly interesting. However, one story is about a massage therapist. Since that‘s my career, I have a LOT of opinions about Russell‘s representation of this work. She tries to be creative, but for me this story especially fell flat. Really flat. Offensively so. I had to get on my soapbox about it!

I loved these stories! I think some people found some unsatisfying or too open-ended but they were almost all satisfying enough for me--very creepy and thought-provoking. I think my favorites were "Reeling for the Empire" and "Proving Up." Doesn't actually fit #zombieoutbreak but check the spoiler comments for why I chose it. #hallowreads

Natasha.C.Barnes So I kept trying to figure out what exactly the scary guy in Proving Up was so that I could fit it in #autumnbingo: a ghost? A madman? Something else? Then I read an interview with Karen Russell where she offhandedly referred to him as "the zombie farmer"!! Hadn't even crossed my mind...weird, right? 7y
